At one time there was the Alberta Advantage now is the Alberta Addiction a new catch phrase that is more fitting in the wake of six consecutive deficits that has plunged Alberta into the black hole of debt?

Here is a list of the 6 consecutive deficits including the current 2013-2014 term:

Co-op donates $6,000 to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

Pincher Creek Co-op donated $3,000 to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) on March 26, 2013.  This represents the second payment that Pincher Creek Co-op has donated toward the creation of the Co-op Display that is taking place on the east side of the original museum building on the south end of James Avenue.   The total of the two donations adds up to $6,000.

"It is a very worthwhile cause for the community at large, and it's great that the facade that will be made by the benefactor of this money is really going to show the history of the Co-op over the last 91 years," said Co-op General Manager David Crowell.

Town Council Notes, March 25, 2013 meeting

Pincher Creek's Town Council met on the evening of March 25, 2013.  In attendance were Mayor Ernie Olsen, Councillors Don Anderberg, Sahra Hancock, Lorne Jackson, Murray Lauder, and Wayne Oliver.  CAO Laurie Wilgosh and Finance Officer Wendy Catonio were also present.

Early Childhood Mapping Project results brought to Council

Collette Sinnott presented the council with the results to date of the Early Childhood Mapping Project (ECMP) and the results of the Early Development Instrument (EDI).   The tests were conducted based on postal code, taking in Pincher Creek and area.  The EDI is a test that gathers information about five different areas of a child's development: Physical health and well being, emotional maturity, Communication skills and general knowledge, Social competence, and Language and thinking skills.  "In our town one in four kids are not going into school with the tools they need,"  said Sinnott, explaining that those "tools" could be skill-sets such as social skills, appropriate clothing, or proper nutrition.

Rotary raising funds for local sports teams

The Pincher Creek Rotary Club is currently raising funds for local children sports teams by selling tickets at the Ranchland Mall. Rotary members will be at a booth from 10 am to 4 pm Friday the 29, and Saturday the 30.

The tickets are $5.00 each, and have a one in five hundred chance to win a $500 Co-op gift card, good at Pincher Creek Co-op grocery, gas bar, and home center. The draw will be held on May 16.

"In the past, we built the change rooms at the football field, bought sports equipment, and sponsored free swim and skate days," said volunteer Earl Shields. Gerry Alex added, "It's good to help out the kids."

Premier Redford remembers Premier Ralph Klein

Premier Alison Redford released the following statement today on the passing of former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein.

“I am truly saddened by our loss of Ralph Klein.”

“Ralph Klein’s ability to connect with Albertans from all walks of life was absolutely remarkable. He could walk from the Petroleum Club in downtown Calgary to the curling rink in St. Paul and carry on a conversation with absolutely everyone he met. Ralph was a real man of the people.”

“Ralph was a staunch defender of our province as he had a deep and abiding love for Alberta and Albertans. His vision and extraordinary political instincts provided Alberta with tremendous leadership for 14 years.”

“Condolence books will be set up in government buildings across the province where Albertans can pay tribute to former Premier Klein. In addition, an online tribute page will be available for Albertans to share their memories of Ralph. Details will be announced soon.”

“His passing is a loss to us all. On behalf of all my colleagues in the government caucus and my family, I want to offer my heartfelt condolences to his wife Colleen and their family during this very difficult time. He will be dearly missed.”

Athlete of the day March 29, 2013: Jarret Plante

Jarret Plante has made a big splash in the world of swimming.  This 11 year old is in grade 6 at Canyon School and is breaking Provincial swim records.

At the Junior Lifeguard Club Provincials in Edmonton held on March 16, he gained two silver medals.  One was in the Tow with Fins, and one in the 50 metre with Fins.  The big news is that he also earned a gold medal in the Obstacle Swim, and broke another Provincial record in that category.

RCMP Redcliff, The Canadian Anti Fraud Center and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Technological Crime Branch have been receiving reports from Canadians who say their computers are being frozen or they have been "locked out" of their computers.  This happens primarily after complainants receive pop-up messages warning them their computers have  been associated with child pornography.

This story is just one version of the truth about water Fluoridation.

Post Second World War there was a movement started in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945, to artificially fluoridate the domestic water supply as a means of mass medicating the public to promote oral health. That is to say, by introducing fluoride, it was believed that children's teeth would form a harder surface before erupting through the gums, hence making them more resilient to cavities.

Athlete of the day March 28, 2013: Lexi Yellowhorn

Lexi Yellowhorn is also an athlete who demonstrates "never give up spirit." She is one of the smaller athletes in her Barracuda Judo Club class, but that doesn't stop her from working with boys and girls much bigger than her. In December, she travelled to Calgary to meet Canadian Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier and attended a training session he led. Lexi currently holds a yellow belt.

Lexi is in Grade 3 at Napi's Playground, and is in her first year of Judo.  She also enjoys soccer, going to the park, and painting.

She said her favourite part of judo is "The throws".

Lions daffodil sales help fight cancer

The Pincher/Cowley Roaring Lions are manning a booth this week at the Ranchland Mall selling daffodils to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Daffodils are $6.00 for a bundle of 10 flowers.  According to the Canadian Cancer Society webpage  the money raised through flower sales goes toward cancer research, supportive care to people living with cancer, comprehensive cancer information, prevention initiatives, and advocacy for healthy public policy.u

"If cancer hasn't touched your life, you are very, very, fortunate," said volunteer Fay Jenkins.

Volunteers will be selling the flowers Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 6:30 pm, and on Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.

Pincher Creek Air Cadets initiative underway

An initiative has started to form a new Air Cadet Corps. in Pincher Creek and the group is looking for kids, parents and volunteers to become part of this great program. Cadets is a national organization whose purpose is to develop in youth the
attributes of leadership, engaged and active citizenship and physical fitness, all within an environment that is community-oriented and safe.

Road bans on the paved and oiled local roads will go into effect in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 8:00 AM.  Axle weights will be as indicated:

• Local Road - Gladstone Valley Road, south from SH #507 to Gladstone Creek Crossing. Allowable Axle Weight 75%.
• Local Road - Airport road, west of Pincher Station to Village of Cowley, Old Highway #3. Allowable Axle Weight 75%.
• Local Road - Maycroft Road, from the junction of Highway #22 to the Forestry Boundary. Allowable Axle Weight 75%.

Please be advised these road bans will be in effect until further notice.

Athlete of the day March 27, 2013: Isabel Litchfield

Isabel Litchfield

Isabel Litchfield is one of the youngest members of the Barracuda Judo Club. She helps sensei Jennifer Parker set up the mats and is always looking for extra time on the mats. Isabel recently attended the Judo Alberta All Girls Sleepover Camp lead by national team member Bianca Ockedahl and was awarded the prestigious pink judogi for her effort and spirit.

"I like to have lots of fun, and I listen to my senseis," Isabel said after a Monday evening practice.  "My favorite part about Judo is when you get to have lots of fun and learn more things."  Of the Sleepover Camp she said "We got to learn more things, and there were only girls, and for the sleep over part we got to watch a movie."

Isabel also enjoys basketball, soccer, volleyball, reading and drawing.

Pincher Creek Figure Skating Club holds annual Extravaganza

The Pincher Creek Figure Skating Club held their annual show on Saturday afternoon, March 23 at the Memorial Community Centre Arena.  A large and appreciative crowd was in attendance as they presented "Cutting Edge".  Beautiful soloist performances were performed by Alexandra Morgan, Jaydn Tanner, Miranda Van Loon, Tessa Roy, and Taylor Wells.Other production numbers included members of Jr. and Sr. StarSkate and Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced CanSkate.

The season of markets has begun.  The Spring Craft Market was held at the old Fields location in the Ranchland Mall on March 22 - 23.  "It was good.  It's how much the vendors are smiling when they leave that lets me know if it was a successful market," and it was successful, according to organizer Betty Hepner.

The market had 37 vendors with everything from baked goods, homemade crafts, jewelry and home businesses that were letting people know that they are available.

Soccer registration kicks off 2013 season

Soccer registration was held up at the Ranchland Mall March 22 - 23.  "It's been going very well, we have a lot of younger and new registrations," said Registration Manager Joanne Cyr.

They are taking children born in 2008 or earlier, right up to 18 years old.  In addition to the regular season that begins April 29, the kids can also sign up for the British Soccer Camp an event that happens every Friday from May 4 - June 8, or for the week for July 22 - 26.

Soccer helps kids develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and is fun exercise.  If you would like to register for the soccer season the last registration is at the Ranchland Mall April 5, 5 pm to 8 pm, and April 6, 12 pm - 5 pm.

There were Cougars, Grizzlies, Wolves and Monsters out on the slopes of Castle Mountain on Sunday, March 25, 2013.  These were only some of the names of the teams that took part in the Nancy Greene Terrain Event that took place on the hill.

Sudden Death and Late Travelers in the Crowsnest Pass

At 10:35 am on March 25th, 2013, Crowsnest Pass RCMP received a complaint of a deceased male approximately 7 kms north of Crowsnest Pass on the Kananaskis Road. The circumstances appeared unusual, however the scene showed no indication of foul play. The location was snowmobile accessible only.

Crowsnest Pass RCMP were then advised of some overdue travelers that could possibly be in the area including a 71 year old male, his 69 year old wife and another 66 year old lady from the Fort Macleod area. Information received was that the three may have traveled through the area on March 24 and had not returned in the evening as expected. Upon RCMP investigators arriving on scene, the deceased male was confirmed as the missing 71 year old male.

Patrols further north on the Kananaskis Road located the other two ladies hiking south 10 km from where the deceased male was located. Their vehicle was located another 5 kms north stuck in heavy snow. They indicated that the 71 year old male had left the vehicle to get help at around 3:00 pm March 24 after getting the vehicle stuck and they left the vehicle in the morning when he did not return. The ladies were transported to safety with the assistance of Crowsnest Pass Rescue and the RCMP.

Research and experience in vision clinics around the Province show that there are a great many children who struggle with serious vision concerns, and that these are mostly undetected and uncorrected. These children move through school grades and find things progressively more difficult, and for some, they simply quit. First Nations children are most affected, although Caucasians also experience very high rates of these ‘visual impediments to learning’, or VIL. This is not only a problem in Alberta, and it affects schoolchildren everywhere.

RCMP seek information about missing Kelowna woman

The Kelowna RCMP are continuing the search for a 34 year old Kelowna woman who was believed to be last seen in 2008.

Andria Lucille MEISE apparently left Kelowna in 2006 to relocate to Fort St John, BC. This was the last time any of her family heard from her until a family member saw her in a Tim Horton's Restaurant in Grande Prairie, Alberta in 2008. Unfortunately, the family member who saw her was not aware that Andria was missing and did not make contact or confirm it was her. While she resided in Kelowna, Andria lived a high risk lifestyle, cycling in and out of substance abuse but she always maintained contact with her family and always made them aware whenever she was moving.

Easter comes early to Pincher Creek Co-op

Pincher Creek Co-op held their 4th annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Co-op grocery store on the evening of March 24, 2013. Kids holding their baskets and bags gathered around the store entrance to visit with Cooper the mascot and wait for their turn to hunt for candy. Organizers allowed 12 kids in the store at a time, going from the youngest age groups to the older kids.

The event has been steadily growing, attracting close to 120 children this year. The kids all seemed to have a great time at this sweet event. They really cleaned up, taking home over 50 pounds of chocolates and approximately 1,000 packages of gum.

Pincher Creek's Barracuda Judo Club participated in their very first tournament ever on March 23 in Raymond.  Nine athletes from Pincher Creek participated: Rhett Fitzpatrick, Easton Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Cooley, Solomon Cooley, William Johnson Jr., Corbin Litchfield, Sophia Citrigno, Mya Citrigno, and Mia Parker. Every single one of them earned a medal at the tournament.

With the Easter weekend upon us, I thought it a perfect time to share a positive political story with you.  Don’t laugh ...there is such a thing from time to time.

Last week my Wildrose colleagues and I were able to share details on a principled decision that we made awhile back and I’m thrilled to be a big part of it.

You see not long after the election, a PC dominated legislative committee voted to increase MLA pay by 8%.  Yes, in an era when we’re asking everybody else to hold the line or take rollbacks, they voted themselves a raise!  Well, we didn’t approve and didn’t vote to support it.  In fact, we feel so strongly that it is wrong and sends the wrong message to Albertans, we decided to do something about it.

Lost between Claresholm and Granum.  'Sheba' is a Female Husky cross. She is Very timid and very difficult to catch. We need tips on where she's been spotted so we know where to look. It's very unlikely that 'SHEBA' will approach anyone. She went missing east of Highway 2, between Claresholm and Granum in the farmlands, but she could be a good distance in any direction by now. 'SHEBA' was a wearing a faded Pink martingale collar. If spotted, please call 403-519-3065 to let us know when and where, so we can go looking."

Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library hosted author Jacqueline Guest on the evening of March 21, 2013.  The reason Jaqueline Guest decided to become an author hit very close to home.  When her daughter was in grade four, she decided that she liked the 'Sweet Valley High" series of books aimed at pre-teens.  Guest looked into the series herself and then asked her daughter what the appeal was.  Her daughter told her that, "My job is school, and my job is hard.  When I come home from work, I want to relax.  I know right away who is going to be the bad girl, who is the good girl, and I know there is going to be a happy ending.  At the end of it, I can feel good and relax."

Guest decided that she was able to write to what her daughter wanted out of a book, complete with drama, action, a feel-good ending with relateable characters that would contain more substance than the books her daughter was reading at the time.

Thanks to a heroic effort by over 50 oldtimers hockey players and dozens more volunteers, Pincher Creek now boasts an Emergency Room equipped with a state of the art Lifepak 15 monitor/defibrillator. “This unit is a definite step up from the old Lifepak 12 unit we’ve had in operation since the late 90s,” said Jordan Koch, Site Manager at Pincher Creek Health Centre. “We’re all so grateful to the players and donors that made it happen.”

Town of Pincher Creek Staff, Councillors and the Mayor operated a booth at the Ranchland Mall from March 18 - 21 in an attempt to bring current budget for the Town of Pincher Creek to its citizens.   This year the Town has prepared a two-year budget to cover 2013 through 2014.

Castle Mountain Resort will be the site of a fundraising Flea market for STARS air ambulance service.  All sorts of interesting items ranging from garage sale stuff to new and old silent auction bid items will be available.

There have been at least 5 people air lifted to Calgary that were injured in the West Castle valley and survived with the help of STARS.

Donations of items are welcome to make this event a success.

On  March 19 Lethbridge College announced the closure of 2 of its 5 rural campuses,  the Fort Macleod and Pincher Creek campuses.

Current students will be able to complete any courses they are currently enrolled in at these two campuses but the college is no longer accepting registration for new courses at those campuses.

The Pincher Creek campus will be closed after June.

Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council will be continuing to run their Pincher Creek learning facility.

Working in partnership with the Community Safety Net (CSN), Pincher Creek's Group Group Youth (GGY) is making  Drug Safety books available to its young clientele. Another book that will be available starting in May will be the Personal Safety book, geared for children ages 9 - 12, also from CSN.

These books are free to the public and will be available through GGY and the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library.  GGY is happy to present these books with the help CSN and the various Pincher Creek businesses that contributed towards helping supply the books.

Oldman River Antique Equipment and Threshing Club AGM to be held April 15

The 2013 Annual General Meeting for the Oldman River Antique Equipment and Threshing Club will be held Monday, April 15th at 7:00 pm in the Summerview Hall at Heritage Acres Farm Museum.

 We are proposing to amend the bylaws during this meeting.

Annual Fishburn Easter Egg Hunt to be held on Good Friday

The Fishburn Recreation Society will be hosting their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday, March 29, starting at 11:00 am at Fishburn Park.

There will be a potluck lunch.  It will cost $1 to participate in the Easter Egg hunt, and BBQ hotdogs will be provided for $1.

Bring a basket to collect eggs in, a chair, warm clothes for around the campfire, refreshments, utensils, etc.

Athletes of the day March 19, 2013: She-Nooks

2012/13 Pincher Creek She-Nooks

Pincher Creek's She-Nooks hosted a six-team tournament at the Memorial Community Centre Arena on Saturday, March 16 to finish up their 2012/13 hockey season.  They won 2 of their three games, including their final game against Vulcan, which featured one of the strongest periods of hockey of their year.  A great way to end another fun hockey season.

Toni Lucas joins the Pincher Creek Voice full-time

On Monday March 18 I started my first day as a full time Pincher Media employee based out of our new office in the Ranchland Mall.  I have been working with the Pincher Creek Voice since its inception and I am looking forward to taking on the myriad of new challenges that I face in the roles that I will be taking on.

I will continue to report on community events, as I have for the last year and a half.  I will also be responsible for advertising and sales for the Pincher Creek Voice, and I will be the face office most days.  We plan to be open from 11 am to 4 pm Monday through Saturday at this point in time.

I am very excited about this new opportunity and our new office, located at the south end of the Ranchland Mall (across from Mrs. P's.)

I will no longer be working at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, where I was for almost 6 years, and I appreciate how supportive the staff, executive, board and volunteers have been during this transition.
