2017 Blessing and Rededication of St Michael's School

Chris Davis - St. Michael's School in Pincher Creek hosted a welcome back barbecue on Thursday, September 28. The food was prepared by the Knights of Columbus. The event welcomed all the students back to school, allowed their parents and guardians a chance to get to know the teachers better, and welcomed and familiarized new students with the school.

On Friday, April 8, Madame Parker’s French Immersion kindergarten class from St. Michael’s school toured the Pincher Creek Community Health Centre. 17 students and their 7 adult helpers were taken through the hospital and clinic, led by Nurse Trudy Bennett. The class’s teacher Madame Jennifer Parker talked about how grateful she is to live and teach in a small town, where it’s possible to walk on field trips like this. Next Friday, April 15, the English speaking kindergarten class will be taking their own tour of the Health Centre.

St. Michael's School in Pincher Creek is in the midst of renovations for the building's modernization project.  Demolition of the south end of the building has begun.  The area that used to house the chapel, kitchen, offices, and Mr. Smith and Mrs. Charette's rooms are now being prepared or cleared away to make room for the new construction.  Some of the upcoming changes include a multiple use Career and Technologies Studies area, a large commons area, and to include more natural light through larger modern windows.   Grades K - 8 are taking classes at St. Michael's while other grades are in Foothills Church for the duration of the construction.  Construction is projected to be completed within two years.

St. Michael’s School holds year end barbecue

St. Michael’s school held a year end barbecue on Thursday June 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.,  celebrating the end of yet another school year. Many current students and their parents, former students, faculty and others all joined at this event. Holy Spirit School Trustee Judy Lane and former trustee Marilyn Welsch were present at the bbq.

St. Michael School held their 2015 Sword and Shield Athletic Awards on Thursday evening June 11. Athletic Director Mr. Tyler Speelman was MC for the event. Awards and certificates were given out by the school's sports directors and coaches. They each shared anecdotes about their athletes and the past season.

Presenting the 2015 Graduating Class of St. Michael's High School in Pincher Creek. 18 students were honoured during Commencement Ceremonies held at the Pincher Creek Community Hall on May 9.

2015 National Aboriginal Day celebrations held at St. Michael's School

St. Michael's School was the site of 2015 National Aboriginal Day celebrations that included drumming, riding in a Red River Cart, a sash presentation and artifact display by the Chinook 1880 Métis Association, Piikani Nation School dancers and drummers, a petting zoo, and in-teepee seminars with Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Piikani Elder representatives.

Caleb Evans to travel to Montreal for international La Dictée PGL finals

St. Michael's School French Immersion student Caleb Evans will be representing Southern Alberta in the 2015 International La Dictée PGL French dictation/spelling finals in Montreal. Participants will go on a group excursion around Montreal on Saturday May 23 and the competition is to be held on Sunday May 24, according to Caleb's dad Kayne.

"I'm really excited, actually," said Caleb.  "I'm really looking forward to seeing Old Montreal, I have heard that it's really nice there, and really cool."

"Our hotel is 2 kilometers from where the Montreal Canadiens play, so my dad and I were maybe planning to go there, if I had time. You can even take a tour of the arena."  Caleb is also a Pincher Creek Chinooks hockey player.

St. Michael's Physical Education Director Tyler Speelman has been going through a conisderable workout this week. He has been escorting his students from grades 5-10 to the MCC Arena in Pincher Creek for ice skating. Speelman said that the school provides skates and helmets for students who do not already have their own equipment.

St. Michael's School held their 2014 Sword and Shield Academic Awards Night on October 16, 2014. Acting as the Master of Ceremonies was Principal Don Kuchinson, who thanked everyone for attending. "Tonight we honour those students who have achieved academic success from grades 6 - 12 for the 2013 -2014 school year." After all the awards were presented, Principal Kuchinson acknowledged the hard work of the students, their parents, families, and school staff for all of their efforts to help create a place where students can excel. Afterward everyone was invited to the mall in the school for refreshments.

Recently St. Michael's teacher Dominique Plouffe-Chandler was awarded for her work with the French Immersion programming at St. Michael's School.  The Prix d'Excellence André Obadia is a national award.

St. Michael's School in Pincher Creek held their 110th anniversary in conjunction with the annual Feast of St. Michael on Saturday, September 27.  The Knights of Columbus put out a lovely feast that included beef on a bun, salads, and had ice cream and cupcakes for dessert.

Kindergarten to grade 8 students and staff  at St. Michael's School in Pincher Creek worked with Trickster Theatre to put on the production 'Inside the Bottle' during the afternoon of Wednesday, December 11. The students performed in 13 skits about water bottles and recycling using props like playmats, water bottles of various sizes, pool noodles, ropes, plungers, buckets, tubs, parachute material, and a crash mat. The attitude of 'The show must go on' prevailed despite the weather outside creating conflicts.

Judy Lane has been acclaimed as the Trustee for Holy Spirit School Board Ward 4, representing Pincher Creek's St. Michael's School, where she will be replacing outgoing Trustee David DeCock.

"The children. That's what I see myself as, a spokesperson for the children."

Friends of St. Michael's raises funds for a variety of events

The Friends of St. Michael's (FSM)  is an active group of interested citizens that raises funds to help support cultural and athletic programs within the school.  "Where government support isn't as good, or doesn't support something at all, we like to step in and say we are going to show you as a community that we help," explained FSM Chair Lorraine Bruder.   She also cautioned that FSM receives more requests for money than their fundraising  can handle in the course of a year.
