Public input sought on Alberta’s workplace laws

Government of Alberta - Albertans are invited to participate in a review of the province’s labour legislation to ensure fair and family-friendly workplaces that support a strong economy.  The review focuses on the Employment Standards Code and the Labour Relations Code, neither of which has undergone significant updates since 1988.  These laws cover topics such as hours of work, overtime, general holidays, special leaves and collective bargaining rules. Some of Alberta’s workplace rules are currently out-of-step with the rest of Canada and these areas need to be reviewed.

Pilot program helps Alberta youth find good jobs

Government of Alberta - So far, 94 young Albertans have found jobs through the GenA program, a partnership between the Government of Alberta and Prospect Human Services. First launched in Calgary and Edmonton last June, the initiative is helping Albertans aged 18 to 30 secure employment while showing employers the benefits of hiring youth.

STEP 2017 program launches today

Government of Alberta - Starting today, Alberta employers looking to hire students for summer 2017 can now apply for the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

Albertans hard at work over the holiday

Government of Alberta - Many Albertans will be working this holiday season to ensure the festive break is merry and bright.  Health-care workers, utility employees, clerks, restaurant and grocery staff, first responders and road crews will be working to give Albertans an opportunity to make the most of their holiday.

Alberta minimum wage to increase on Oct. 1

Alberta’s general minimum wage will increase from $11.20 to $12.20 per hour effective October 1. The lower liquor server rate of $10.70 per hour will also be eliminated on that date. The increase is the second in a series designed to culminate in a $15 per hour minimum wage by 2018. The lower minimum wage for liquor servers will also be eliminated.
