Olympic medalist Brent Hayden inspires local swimmers

Chris Davis with Kim Jorgenson - World Champion and Olympic Bronze medalist for Canada Brent Hayden and his wife Nadina Zarifeh were at the Pincher Creek Pool and in a classroom setting March 24-26 to teach and inspire local youth swimmers. 23 kids participated in their half-day lessons on the Friday, and 17 attended their weekend-long boot camp. "I'm just giving back everything I learned from my years being an international swimmer representing Canada to help the new generation," said Hayden after Saturday's pool session. "I'm blessed to be in this position."

Dolphins swim club requests a waiver of swim meet fees

Toni Lucas - Council for the Town of Pincher Creek held a regular meeting on Monday evening, August 22. During this meeting they heard from a delegation from the Pincher Creek Dolphins Swim Club. Dolphins representative Kari Grandoni asked if the Town could waive the Pincher Creek Pool rental fee of $1116.20 for the annual local swim meet  that was held June 10-11. "It brings 250 swimmers and their families to our area." Grandoni listed a number of ways people who attend a swim bring commerce to an area by buying fuel, snacks, groceries, eating at restaurants, and staying at hotels and campgrounds. She said the club gets donations from local businesses and alumni, and is active in fundraising. "We are a very active club. Our goal is to try and keep registration (cost) low to allow local families to participate."

Pincher Creek Dolphins attend 2013 ASSA Provincial Championships meet in Edmonton

19 members of Pincher Creek's Dolphins Swim Club attended to 2013 Alberta Summer Swimming Association (ASSA) Provincial Championships meet held on August 16.  55 teams participated, and our Dolphins placed 10th overall.

In total the Dolphins earned 6 Gold medals, 4 Silver medals, 4 Bronze medals, 16 Personal Bests, 10 new Dolphins Club records, and a new Regional* record by Assistant Coach Ardelle Layden.  Layden had a great meet, establishing a new Provincial Record in the Girls 18 and Over Freestyle with a time of 1:04.67 and earning 2 Gold medals and a Silver in addition to establishing new Personal Bests AND Dolphins Club records in all four of her events.

Athlete of the Day August 15, 2013: Hannah Nazarek

Hannah Nazarek is 17 years old and this will be her last season swimming as a youth with the Pincher Creek Dolphins Swim Club.  She recently attended the Regional swim meet in Lethbridge.  It was a milestone, being the 100th swim meet in her swimming career.

At the Regional meet, Nazarek earned 4 gold medals, and 2 silvers, and she broke her own record in the 1500 Freestyle, establishing a new Dolphins Club record.

 The photo above was taken just after she achieved a best time at Regionals in her back stroke.  She was very happy with her time of  1.22:03.  Hannah won 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals.

 Hannah has been with the Pincher Creek Dolphins for 12 years.  She will be competing in the Provincials Swim Meet in Edmonton this weekend, which will be her last stop as a youth swimmer. She will emerge next year as an 18 and Over Masters Swimmer.  Hannah is moving at the end of August to attend Lethbridge College, having graduated from Livingstone School in June of this year.

• 25 Dolphins qualify for Provincials
• Lots of medals and personal bests
• New club records set

Over 30 members of Pincher Creek's Dolphins Swim Club traveled to Lethbridge to compete in the Regional Swim Meet on the weekend of August 9 - 11.  They brought back 24 gold medals, 21 in silver, and a dozen bronze.  They achieved 92 Personal Best times at the event.  They were the Net Point champions, averaging more than 22 points per swimmer, which means the 2013 Region F Net Points Banner will be hanging in the Dolphins home pool here in Pincher Creek.

The Pincher Creek Dolphin Swim Club participate in the Fort Macleod Sharks Swim Meet on July 19 and at the Crowsnest Pass Piranhas John Irwin Invitational Swim Meet on July 26.  Since then they've been preparing for the Alberta Summer Swimming Association (ASSA) Regionals, which will be held in Lethbridge starting this Friday August 9, continuing through the weekend.

Pincher Creek's swimming pool was humming with organized chaos June 7 - 8 during the Dolphins 2013 Pincher Creek Invitational Swim Meet. Close to 200 participants from 7 swim clubs came to challenge each other in a totoal of 749 swims, bringing their families along. The competitors camped out in the arena, kids were playing in the hallways, and outside there were swimmers and siblings playing games.
