MLA Pat Stier statement on Municipal Government Act review process

Wildrose Party - Wildrose Shadow Municipal Affairs Minister Pat Stier released the following statement today following the tabling of Bill 21, the Modernized Municipal Government Act:

“Wildrose will be carefully reviewing this extensive legislation that will have a direct impact on the communities in which we live and work.  This review is the culmination of years of work, and we need to take the time to consult with Albertans on the Act and the many regulations. This is the largest Act in Alberta, and there is much room for the NDP government to slip up if they choose ideology over common sense.

ASBA looks forward to providing input on the Modernized Municipal Government Act

Alberta School Boards Association - Following introduction of Bill 21, the Modernized Municipal Government Act in the Alberta Legislature this afternoon, the Vice President of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), Mary Martin, issued the following statement on behalf of the Association:

“Bill 21, the Modernized Municipal Government Act, is an important body of legislation for Alberta. The amended MGA is of great interest to school boards provincially, as elements contained within it intersect with school board responsibilities and authority. Specifically, there are important sections that relate to the building of new schools, the operation of existing schools, and funding.

Alberta Government tables Modernized Municipal Government Act

The Modernized Municipal Government Act was tabled in the Alberta Legislature on Tuesday and Municipal Affairs will consult across the province this summer to ask Albertans for their feedback.

The last major review of the MGA was completed in 1995 and does not reflect new economic realities, changes in technology or evolving municipal roles and relationships. Municipalities are at the grassroots of creating stronger, more dynamic communities and they need robust, forward-looking legislation to meet the changing needs of Albertans.
