Knights of Columbus Endowment Fund awards grant to “Ready, Set, Go!” initiative

Press release - On May 15 the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta and the Knights of Columbus #5726 presented the Holy Spirit School Division with a cheque for $3,818.50 in support of the Ready, Set, Go! Program.  Ready, Set, Go! is a collaboration between the Holy Spirit School Division and Lethbridge School District No. 51. The initiative provides school supplies, backpacks, clothing, and many other goods and services to children in need during a back-to-school fair, held before the first day of school each year. The grant awarded today will support this year’s event, scheduled to be held in August. “The Ready, Set, Go! Program gives many children a good head start for the school year. We acknowledge the Knights of Columbus Our Lady Peace Council and thank them for their generous support,” said Chris Smeaton, Holy Spirit School Division Superintendent.

Submitted - St. Michael's School held their Athletic Sword and Shield Awards night on Thursday June 8 in the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium.

Two St. Michael's students to compete in the International La Dictée P.G.L

Toni Lucas - Two students from St. Michael's French Immersion classes were honoured to engage in the International La Dictée P.G.L. competition Friday, May 12 12:30 pm Eastern Standard Time.  This is the first year the competition is open to middle school participants, and Sofia Citrigno and William Johnson Jr., grades 7 and  8 respectively, won the right to compete in the international segment of the competition.  Both have been taking French immersion since kindergarten.

St. Michael's Middle School students participate in Dragon Days

submitted - On April 11, 12 and 13, St. Michael’s Middle School students (Grades 5-8) participated in their second round of “Dragon Days.” On these days, students got to choose two activities to participate in. Some of the sessions included Mixed Media Art Projects, Health & Fitness activities, Outdoor Games, Soap Making, Kayaking, Sewing, Mini Treehouse Building, Cupcake Decorating, Hairstyling, Robotics, Coding, Medical Careers, Traditional First Nations Games and Drama.

The students had a fabulous time and are looking forward to Dragon Days 2017/18.

2017 Basketball Zones wins for local teams, Dragons and Sabres boys going to provincials

Livingstone's 1 A Boys Sabres earned first place at Zones at Lethbridge College on Saturday evening after defeating Senator Gershaw by a wide margin.  Top Sabres scorers in the final were Jonathan Erickson with 20 points, Quinlan Connelly-Engel with 15 points, and Brady Douglas with 14 points.  St. Michael's Jr. A Girls Dragons basketball team earned first place at Zones.  The Jr. B Boys Dragons earned second place.  The Jr. B Girls Dragons earned third place at Post Season*.  The 1A Boys Dragons earned third place after defeating Coaldale by a wide margin on Saturday evening.  Top scorers for the 1A Dragons were Mitchel Zoratti with 22 points, Calvin Cooley with 18 points, and Michael Svab and Tyler Gerber with 10 points each.

Going to Provincials:  Livingstone Sabres, St. Michael's Dragons, and Senator Gershaw will be representing the South Zone at the 2017 Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) 1A Boys Basketball Provincials, to be held March 16-18 at Rundle Academy in Calgary.

Chris Davis - The 2017 Chinook Basketball League 2017 Post Season Tournament was held March 2-4, co-hosted by Pincher Creek's St. Michael's and Matthew Halton High Schools.  Teams from 10 Chinook League member schools participated.  Kainai's Lady Warriors earned Gold in the Girls division.  St. Michael's Dragons earned Gold in the Boys division.  Second place Girls was earned by Matthew Halton's Hawks. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres Boys earned Silver.  Third place Girls went to St. Michael's Dragons and third place Boys went to Kainai's Warriors.  The league's year end banquet and awards were held on Friday evening, and is the subject of a separate story (click here).

St. Michael's students make promo video for Waterton Lakes National Park

Students at Pincher Creek's St. Michael's School expressed their love of nearby Waterton Lakes National Park with a bilingual video that includes their own background music.  The video was inspired by a Parks Canada contest intended to highlight Canada's national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas. 

To participate in this year’s contest, students were asked to create a video highlighting which Parks Canada place they would like to visit to celebrate Canada’s 150th in 2017. The grand prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to Nova Scotia from June 5-9, 2017, for a class of up to thirty students and one adult chaperone per ten students.  There are a number of other prizes.

Combined Dragon/Sabres SV Boys Volleyball team honoured for Provincial Bronze and Sportsmanship achievements

Chris Davis - On February 28 a special ceremony was held at the St. Michael's School's Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium to honor the members of the 2017 SV Boys Volleyball team, which included member of Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres and St. Michael's Dragons. The team earned third place at provincials and were also awarded the provincial Sportsmanship banner.

The 2017 Chinook Basketball League Post Season Tournament and Awards Banquet was held last weekend, with games at St. Michael's and Matthew Halton School. St. Michael's Dragons Boys and Kainai's Lady Warrior earned Gold. Livingstone's Sabres Boys and the Halton Hawks Girls* earned Silver. Chris Davis - The Chinook Basketball League's 2016/17 season will conclude with the league basketball tournament and awards dinner this weekend, hosted at the Matthew Halton and St. Michael's gymnasiums. After that comes Zones and Provincials. Kainai SV is at the top of the current Chinook League standings with 9 wins and no losses. Matthew Halton's Hawks are in second place with 8 wins and 1 loss. Coalhurst is in third place with 7 wins and 2 losses. St. Michael's Dragons are in fourth place with 6 wins and 3 losses.

2017 Epiphany celebration at St. Michael's

Kings and Queens for a day

Chris Davis - Pincher Creek's St. Michael's School held their annual Epiphany celebrations on Thursday, January 19. Students participated in a special assembly at the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium. The event celebrated catholic culture with French traditions and was led by French Immersion teacher Dominque Plouffe-Chandler and several older students, and included a play by about the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, a traditional King and Queen dance, and the return of galette des Rois (King cakes). Those who found a marascino cherry in their cakes were named Kings and Queens for the day.

Chris Davis - Last Friday and Saturday the Matthew Halton Gym was the busy site of the 2017 Halton Hawks Junior Girls A and B invitational basketball tournament.  12 teams played in a total of four pools for preliminary games before contesting in A and B final games.

Chris Davis -  St. Michael's Sr. Boys and Girls Dragons basketball teams hosted their Crowsnest Pass counterparts at the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium on January 11, and won both games by wide margins.

Lucas - In late December the Middle School at St. Michael's held a three day immersive education event featuring a wide variety of activities for students to choose from, both inside the school and out in the community.  Activities included kayaking, curling, skating, pottery, beading, knitting, sewing, CPR and AED instruction, basketball camp, cooking at the community hall, volunteering at the food bank, Blackfoot drumming, Judo, and community/career presentations at Pincher Creek RCMP, Pincher Creek Emergency Services, and Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Chris Davis -  Early into the 2016/17 season, Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres are in first place in the Chinook Basketball League's standings, undefeated in four games.  Coalhurst's Trojans are in second with three wins and one loss (to the Sabres).  St. Michael's Dragons are currently in third place, undefeated in three games.  Matthew Halton's Hawks are still looking for a win after four games.

Chinook Basketball - Dragons host Kainai

Chris Davis -  St. Michael's Dragons senior boys and girls teams hosted their Kainai counterparts for an evening of basketball on Monday, December 5.  The Dragons Boys defeated Kainai 65-46, with both teams consistent throughout.  Kainai's Girls defeated the Dragons 47-34.  The Dragons rallied near the end of the game, narrowing a much bigger gap than was reflected the final score.

Dragons SV Boys Volleyball team first in league, take bronze at provincials

St. Michael's Dragons earned first place at the 2016 SV Boys Westwinds League Tournament after defeating Nobleford in the final game.

Westwinds Volleyball's 2016 MVP was Michael Svab of the Dragons, and the Dragons earned 5 of 6 possible All-Stars nods. Dragons named All-Stars included Calvin Cooley, Jonathan Erickson, Brady Douglas, Tyler Gerber, and Mitchell Zoratti. Steven V. of Immanuel Christian was named the league's other All-Star. The Dragons had 8 wins and no losses during the regular season.

  

The Dragons earned second place at Zones and finished a stellar season by earning Bronze at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association 2A Provincial Championships held November 24-26 in Black Diamond.
