Livingstone Range School Division - Livingstone Range School Division is proud to announce the recipients of the 2018 Dr. Lloyd Cavers Scholarship,
awarded to high school students demonstrating exceptional leadership. Finalists from each school receive $200.00, with an overall winner designated to receive $1,000.00.

Senior leadership change at Livingstone Range School Division

Livingstone Range School Division - Livingstone Range School Division would like to take the opportunity to announce a change in senior administration. Mr. Dave Driscoll, Superintendent, will be leaving the Division to take on the role of Superintendent for Palliser Regional Schools, effective October 1, 2017.

Toni Lucas - Lundbreck's Livingstone School held their 2017 Awards Ceremony last month. Assistant Principal Mrs. Mary Krizan aced as the MC for the evening as the school celebrated achievements by students in grade 7 through grade 12 in the areas of academics, athletics, and special awards.

Canyon School celebrates Canada 150 with a lively maple leaf

Chris Davis (originally published Friday, May 12, 2017) - Approximately 280 students and more than 20 teachers, parents, assistants, and administrative staff from Pincher Creek's Canyon School participated in a fun Canada 150 themed event on Friday morning May 12.  They gathered in the schoolyard, formed a giant maple leaf,, and joyfully sang "O Canada".in honour of our country's 150th birthday.  Canyon School includes students from the Town of Pincher Creek, the Municipal District of Pincher Creek # 9, and the Piikani Nation, from pre-school to grade 6.

As is common in Pincher Creek, the wind played havoc with the sound, as heard from the roof of the school, but this joyful performance of our national anthem deserves to be preserved:

U of L hosts LRSD students for Experiential Learning Week

University of Lethbridge - A group of nine high school students from the Livingstone Range School Division will get a sneak peek of life as a post-secondary student at the University of Lethbridge May 1-5, all the while learning skills to develop solutions to the world’s problems.

Chris Davis, with supplied material - On April 3 Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) grade 10 student Irvin Provost was announced as a silver medal recipient of the annual Indigenous Shining Student Award, which celebrates First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) students who are shining examples in their communities "through embracing and respecting an Aboriginal perspective or world view." He was one of over 60 students nominated from schools across Alberta this year. According to an LRSD press release (excerpted extensively in this article), "Provost is the eldest of four children and has ancestry from both the Piikani and Kainai Nations. He is characterized as an optimistic and deeply thoughtful student with a positive work ethic and strong leadership skills. He has also demonstrated a gift for writing." Provost was honoured at the FNMI Youth Summit which was held at MHHS on Wednesday, April 5.

Provincial budget/school fees announcements have minimal impact on LRSD funding, programs

Livingstone Range School Division - Following recent announcements by the Alberta government regarding school funding and the reduction of school fees, Livingstone Range School Division (LRSD) has determined it will be able to continue operations with minimal impact to student services.

In two separate recent press releases Livingstone Range School Division (LRSD) announced the appointment of Ms. Tara Tanner as Acting Principal and Mr. Greg Freer as Acting Assistant Principal of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek.  The appointment of Ms. Tanner will be effective February 23, 2016 and the appointment for Mr. Freer will be effective February 22, 2016, for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.

Students from Cafam School in Columbia will attend various schools throughout Livingstone Range School Division as part of an international exchange program.  International Home-stay Coordinator Julie Hutchinson said this is the second year the program is running.   Seven students are here for a full semester, and an additional 11 are coming for a one month stay.  "I think it is a great opportunity for the sharing of cultures," said Hutchinson.

Livingstone School in Lundbreck held their annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 18.  Students gathered in the gymnasium to hear Mrs. Mary Krizan talk about Terry Fox, and watched a film about his run 35 years ago.  "Terry Fox is a real Canadian Hero," said Mrs. Krizan.  Fox ran the length of a marathon a day, trying to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research in the early 1980s after he had his leg amputated to try and remove cancer from his leg.  Fox had ‎osteosarcoma, a form of cancer which now has a survival rate of close to 90%.  At the time the mortality rate was much higher.  Terry Fox never finished his run because his cancer spread to his lungs.  He died June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.

Update: Livingstone's Terry Fox Run raised $190.00 for the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

Bruce Decoux resigns from LRSD 68 board

The Board of Trustees of Livingstone Range School Division No. 68 regretfully announces the resignation from the Board of Mr. Bruce Decoux. Mr. Decoux was a Trustee for Ward 2 (Lundbreck and the Crowsnest Pass) of the Livingstone Range School Division. At a future meeting, the Board of Trustees will discuss the next steps in filling this vacancy. The Board wishes to thank Mr. Decoux for his service to students; his input and experience in education will be missed.

Canyon Elementary School in Pincher Creek held a student Talent Show on Monday, June 22.  Students from every grade (1-6)  demonstrated their talents to the entire student body, staff, guests, and family members who attended.

Lundbreck's Livingstone School held their annual Academic and Athletic Awards Night on the evening of June 4 in the school gymnasium.  Presiding over the event, once again, school administrator Mrs. Mary Krizan.  Livingstone Range School Division trustee Clara Yagos was also again in attendance to present the Senior High Citizen of the Year award, awarded to Josee Wiebe.  A sense of community always permeates this event at Livingstone School, including the rites of passage as some receive their last High School awards before moving into young adulthood.  A tip of the hat to all of you, academics, artists, and athletes alike.  Some were away at rodeo events and couldn't attend.  Future employers, patrons, , all of the names listed below come with hard earned stamps of approval.

Canyon School teacher and students earn over $5,500 for cancer causes

Pincher Creek Canyon School Teacher Courtney Cann was inspired by Calgarian Jocelyn Ogrin,  who passed away last year after a battle with cancer, to create a ripple effect that took Canyon School on a wave of hair cuts.  Cann decided to raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation before cutting her hair and donating it to Angel Hair for Kids, "a program of A Child’s Voice Foundation that provides wigs and hair loss solutions to financially disadvantaged children in Canada who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment".  Canyon School's students took up the cause and sold tickets to win a chance to cut Cann's hair, which was divided into sections for the event.

Livingstone Range School Division Board of Trustees approve 2015-2016 budget

The Livingstone Range School Division Board of Trustees approved the 2015-2016 school year budget at their June 23, 2015 public board meeting. The Budget Report can be found on LRSD.ca (About/LRSD Results and Reports/Financial & Capital Reports).

Budget key message:

Overall the 2015-2016 School Year Budget represents a planned use of instructional operating reserves to the amount of $1,022,340. The majority of these funds will be used as a means to transition over a two year period the budget impact due to limited funding increases and the realization of higher operating costs.

New Chair and Vice-Chair elected to Livingstone Range School Division board

A new Chair and Vice-chair were elected at the June 23, 2015 Board Organization Meeting of the Livingstone Range School Division (LRSD). The outgoing chair, Martha Ratcliffe, has completed three years as Chair and is succeeded by Bradley Toone. Mr. Toone became a trustee in 2013 and represents Ward 1, (Nanton, Claresholm, Stavely and Granum). Mr. Toone served as Vice-Chair for the past school year.

Matthew Halton students serve free pancake breakfast as WE Day project

A group of Matthew Halton High School students were at the Ranchland Mall Pincher Creek parking lot on Saturday morning, May 30 serving up a free pancake breakfast for any and all who came,  which turned out to be a total of approximately 60 people.  The event was part of the students' WE Day local project.  Although the ones manning the grill and selling soaps and lotions were in grade 11 or 12, there were students from all grades involved from organizing, fundraising, making soaps and lotions, and making and hanging posters. "This helps pay our way into the next WE Day," said Marieka Welke, who explained that money doesn't buy admission to a WE Day event,  but rather one has to commit to doing positive acts.  The idea of WE Day is to get students aware and involved in issues both locally and globally and have them take positive steps toward making better situations and making a better planet.

On Friday, May 29th, Canyon School's Animal Care Breakout session students and Chinese exchange students were treated to a field trip at the farm of Linda and Jeff Hammond. Linda and Jeff were very diligent in explaining to the students how each different animal required different care and different food. Explanations were also given regarding reasons for raising a variety of animals as well as the veterinary care for individual animals.
