Threats to “Shoot a Public Place” in Calgary or Cochrane

RCMP Alberta - Currently the Cochrane RCMP and the Calgary Police Service are investigating a report of threats via Facebook, where someone wants to “shoot a public place.” At this time there is no direct threat to any one location in Cochrane. This investigation is rapidly unfolding and the RCMP are requesting patience while they conduct their investigation.

Cochrane RCMP responding to numerous weather related accidents

RCMP Alberta - The RCMP out of Cochrane and surrounding detachments are asking the public to travel with extreme caution and to stay off the roads if travel is not completely necessary. Highway 22 and secondary roads are covered in black ice and blowing snow in the area is causing near whiteout conditions.

Search for Sara Coates continues

RCMP Alberta - On September 12th and September 16th, 2017 the Cochrane RCMP as well as Search and Rescue teams from Cochrane, Calgary, Foothills, Didsbury and Badlands conducted searches in the Morley area for Sara Coates. Over 50 Volunteers with the search and rescue teams contributed 644 working hours conducting the search. "Last week we attended our previous search areas to assess the region in light of the extremely dry weather this year, "says Corporal Troy Savinkoff, Cochrane RCMP "we discovered a large amount of land that was previously covered in water was now dry and we wanted to ensure that we took full advantage of this. Thanks to our partners with Search and Rescue we were able to get a large number of boots on the ground in a very short amount of time." The RCMP are dedicated to continue their efforts to locate Sara and would like to thank all the volunteers that have aided in the search.

Body found on Highway 22 near Cochrane, Traffic re-routed for investigation

Update: Cochrane RCMP advise that Highway 22 between the Highway 8 roundabout and Lower Springbank Road is now open to all traffic both north and south bound. Emergency Services have cleared from scene and Calgary Police Service continues to investigate the incident.
RCMP Alberta - A body was found this morning in the ditch of Highway 22, north of the Highway 8 traffic circle. RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigators and Forensics investigators are on the scene along with Cochrane RCMP. The investigation requires that traffic on highway 22 will be re-routed between Highway 1 and Highway 8. Motorists travelling in that area are asked to find an alternate route, such as Sarcee trail or Range Road 33 at Calaway Park.

Two dead after passenger plane crash near Cochrane

Compiled from RCMP Alberta reports - RCMP, military and civilian aircraft responded to a report of a plane crash in the Waiparous area earlier this evening.  At 5:55 pm, Cochrane RCMP received a report of an aircraft that had been seen crashing east of Highway 40 in the Waiparous area. The crash was witnessed by another aircraft and reported to authorities. RCMP responded to the remote area and attempting to locate the crash with the assistance of military and civilian aircraft.

Later in the evening the crashed aircraft was located northwest of Cochrane on Jighway 40. The aircraft involved was a small passenger plane with two individuals on board. Tragically, there were no survivors of the crash.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is the agency responsible for investigation of aircraft crashes. Their investigators will attend the scene in the daylight to begin the examination.

No further information is available and an update is not expected until afternoon of February 14.

The RCMP is thankful to the civilians and other agencies who assisted in the search efforts and wishes to express condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this crash.

Cochrane area road advisory issued

RCMP Alberta - Cochrane RCMP are advising that travel on highways in Cochrane and MD of Rockyview area is not recommended at this time due to reduced visibility and icy road conditions. Tow companies in the area have reported there is an extended service call time in excess of four hours for stranded and disabled vehicles. Highway 1 from Calgary city limits to Highway 1x, Highway 1A from west of Cochrane to 1X and Highway 22 north and south of Cochrane are very icy and snow covered and travel is not recommended at this time.

Cochrane RCMP issue warning about road conditions west of Calgary

RCMP  Alberta - A multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1A has prompted Cochrane RCMP to issue a winter driving conditions warning.

"Motorists should avoid any non-essential travel on Highway 1 until conditions improve."

Today at 11:40 am a multi vehicle collision occurred on the eastbound lanes of Highway 1A at Bearspaw Road. Eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane as crews worked to clear the scene. Both lanes were opened as of 12:30 pm, however, road conditions remain poor.

Pedestrian fatality on Hwy 1 near Cochrane

RCMP Alberta -  Just after midnight this morning Cochrane RCMP received a report of a traffic fatality involving a pedestrian on Highway 1 near the intersection of Highway 22. RCMP attended and discovered a male adult had been struck by an eastbound vehicle. The male was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS. Highway 1 was shut down for approximately five hours while the Collision Investigation Team investigated. The investigation into the dynamics of the collision continues. The identity of the male is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

RCMP Alberta - On October 31, 2016, the Cochrane RCMP received a complaint that sewing needles had been found in two large size chocolate bars.

Cochrane RCMP warn of online fraud

RCMP Alberta - On October 25, 2016, Cochrane RCMP was informed of a form of online fraud.

The victim received a pop up add on his computer from “Click 4 Support” for a refund. The victim was directed to contact the company which they did and the male on the phone requested the victim’s banking information to deposit the refund. Once this was done, the victim did see the refund in their account but was soon contacted again because they had given them too much money. The victim was directed to send a money gram for the extra funds. The company contacted the victim several times about the same causing the victim to suspect this was not legitimate and contacted the RCMP.

Stroller damaged in Cochrane hit and run

RCMP Alberta - At approximately 12:50 PM the Cochrane RCMP received a call of a hit and run in the Wal-Mart parking lot located on Quarry Road in the town of Cochrane.  A mother had parked and set up her stroller and was in the process of getting her child out of her parked vehicle when her vehicle was struck by another vehicle. The mother quickly looked and realized that the other vehicle had also struck her stroller knocking it over and damaging it. Thankfully her child was still in the vehicle and there was no injuries to the mother or the child. The mother made eye contact with the driver and made motions for her to speak to her about the damage to the vehicle and stroller but the other driver quickly left.

Cochrane RCMP arrest armed and dangerous male

RCMP Alberta – On Aug. 14 the Cochrane RCMP received information from the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service advising of a dangerous disturbance they were investigating. The suspect male involved was believed to be travelling to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 15, Cochrane RCMP members were dispatched to Stoney Nakoda First Nation for a disturbance involving the suspect in the earlier incident on the Tsuut’ina Nation.

Prepaid card scams reported in Cochrane

RCMP Alberta – Over the past few days, Cochrane RCMP have investigated a number of frauds involving prepaid cards.

Victims are being called by unknown individuals claiming to be from different agencies such as ATCO, ENMAX and EPCORE and stating that if the victim does not pay their bill within a short timeframe their utilities will be shut off. The caller then states the victim must buy a set dollar amount of prepaid cards and call them back with the digit code on the back of the prepaid card. The cards being asked to buy are gift cards like iTunes card or gas cards.

Bear attack in Bighorn Municipal District

RCMP Alberta – On July 19, 2016, at approximately 12:00 pm Cochrane RCMP were called to assist Emergency Medical Services with a possible bear attack near the Trappers Hill Campground. At this time members are arriving on scene. Location and if this was in fact a bear attack have not been confirmed at this time.

Update: The investigation for this event will be taken over by Fish and Wildlife.

Cochrane RCMP seeking public assistance regarding motorhome fire

RCMP Alberta - At approximately 2:30 am this morning, Cochrane RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle fire just off Highway 1 near Highway 40. Upon arrival, RCMP located a partially burned motorhome with one occupant who had escaped it. The male occupant advised police that he awoke to unknown person(s) near his motorhome and it had been set on fire. The 32 year old male, from Red Deer, has since been transported to hospital with unknown injuries.

RCMP received assistance from the RCMP Police Dog Service as well as Calgary Police Hawcs Helicopter, to search for possible suspects. The matter is still being investigated.  It has been reported that an explosion was heard in the area.
