Postal workers union issues 72-hour job action notice

Christian Davis - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) announced today that it was filing a 72-hour notice of job action after it said Canada Post management declined to agree to a 24-hour extension of negotiations requested by federal Minister of Labour MaryAnn Mihychuk.  CUPW has a strike mandate that is set to expire at midnight eastern time today, Thursday August 25.  According to CUPW  "In the notice it sent to management, CUPW listed its anticipated job actions but has stopped short of walking off the job."  CUPW national president Mike Palecek said  “We are still willing to withdraw our notice if Canada Post agrees to an extension."

Chris Davis - According to a press release issued on Wednesday, Canada Post is extending the 72 hour notice of a lockout issued to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to Monday July 11 at 12:01 am.  "Canada Post agreed to voluntarily submit to binding arbitration as an opportunity for both parties to reach an acceptable resolution" in response to a request issued to Canada Post CUPW-Urban and CUPW-RSMC and Wednesday by the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, MaryAnn Mihychuk, who asked the parties "to submit to binding arbitration to resolve the current impasse at negotiations".

In a press release issued around midnight today, July 5, 2016 Canada Post Corporation (CPC) announced it has issued a 72-hour notice to the Canadian Union of Post Workers (CUPW), which means that a lockout of postal workers could occur on Friday of this week. According to the press release "The issuing of the notice does not necessarily mean that Canada Post will not be operating on Friday. It allows the Corporation to take measures that are necessary to respond to the changing business reality."

Postal strike could happen as soon as Thursday

Canadian postal workers may strike or be locked out as early as Thursday this week, July 7. According to the Canada Labour Code, no strike or lockout action can occur unless one of the parties has provided a 72 hour notice. At the time this was written neither the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) or Canada Post Corporation (CPC) has issued such a notice. In anticipation of a possible postal strike the Alberta Government issued a press release outlining contingency plans to ensure that Albertans can get access to government services in the event a strike occurs (see below for more details).

CUPW asks Pincher Creek's councils for Canada Post Review input

Josh Davis - In an email to the Town of Pincher Creek and the Municipal District No. 9 of Pincher Creek by Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) National President Mike Palecek dated June 6, 2016, Palecek informed the council of a federal review of the public postal service. The letter sought public input, and expressed support for the idea of “postal banking”. Postal banking is the provision of financial and banking services through a post office.
