Seven Persons Spartans earn Gold and STM Dragons earn Silver at SZJHAA Volleyball Zones

Toni Lucas - The 2017 Junior High South Zone Junior High Athletic Association (SZJHAA) Boys 2J Zones Volleyball Tournament was held at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek on November 17 and 18. The areas included southern Alberta with Medicine Hat region represented by the Seven Persons Spartans, the County of Vulcan was represented by the Brant Christian Eagles, Forty Mile Region was represented by the Bow Island St. Michael’s Bears, and Far West Region was represented by Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres and the host team, Pincher Creek's St. Michael’s Dragons. Each team got the opportunity to play a minimum of 8 sets to determine who got to go to the playoff round. Ultimately, The Spartans took home the gold, the Dragons earned silver and the Bears earned bronze.

Pincher Creek's Michael Svab signs to Lethbridge Kodiaks volleyball team

Chris Davis -  Michael Svab, a 2017 graduand of St. Michael's School, will be wearing #3 for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks volleyball team starting next season.  Svab will also be studying Geomatics Engineering at the college, a two-year course.  A signing ceremony was held in the St. Michael's common area on May 2, with a crowd of students there to cheer him on as Kodiaks Head Coach Greg Gibos officially welcomed Svab to the roster.

Chris Davis - On February 28 a special ceremony was held at the St. Michael's School's Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium to honor the members of the 2017 SV Boys Volleyball team, which included member of Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres and St. Michael's Dragons. The team earned third place at provincials and were also awarded the provincial Sportsmanship banner.

St. Michael's Dragons earned first place at the 2016 SV Boys Westwinds League Tournament after defeating Nobleford in the final game.

Westwinds Volleyball's 2016 MVP was Michael Svab of the Dragons, and the Dragons earned 5 of 6 possible All-Stars nods. Dragons named All-Stars included Calvin Cooley, Jonathan Erickson, Brady Douglas, Tyler Gerber, and Mitchell Zoratti. Steven V. of Immanuel Christian was named the league's other All-Star. The Dragons had 8 wins and no losses during the regular season.

  

The Dragons earned second place at Zones and finished a stellar season by earning Bronze at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association 2A Provincial Championships held November 24-26 in Black Diamond.

Dragons win post season A Boys volleyball tournament

Chris Davis - On Friday October 28 four area teams converged at the Matthew Halton High School gym in Pincher Creek for the A Boys post season volleyball tournament. Participating teams included St. Michael's Dragons, Livingstone's Sabres, the Crowsnest Pass Panthers, and hosts the Matthew Halton Hawks. After four games, St. Michael's A Boys Dragons emerged as the Post Season champions after a tough three sets against the Panthers. The Dragons were also first in the South Western Junior High Athletic Association (SWJHAA) league this season.

Hawks host 2016 Junior Girls Volleyball Showdown

Chris Davis - The 2016 Halton Hawks Junior A and B Girls Volleyball Showdown was held at the Matthew Halton High School gymnasium last Friday and Saturday, with a total of 7 "A" and 6 "B" teams participating. The A teams (grade 8/9) were divided into two pools for the initial games of the round robin format invitational tournament.  The B teams (grade 7/8) competed in one pool.

Experiential Learning Week 2016 at MHHS – Basketball and Volleyball

Josh Davis - As a part of Experiential Learning Week  at Matthew Halton High School on May 2 to May 6, athletically inclined students has the opportunity to take a course on volleyball and basketball. Coach Randy Whitehead, who taught the course from Monday to Thursday, said the kids were having a lot of fun. “They’re tired. We’re working them out, I think they’re ready for a nap. I’m ready for a nap.” Whitehead was absent on Friday, so Coach Wayne Alexander took over the course for the day. Students had to fill out a worksheet on technical and fouls on Friday, in order to earn their credits, and were also judged on participation.

Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Senior Boys Dragons are competing in the 2015 Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) Boys 1A Volleyball Championship, which is being held at École Héritage in Falher, Alberta.

Games from this tournament are being live streamed at SportsCanada.tv.

The Dragons played Bawlf's Wildcats earlier today, Thursday November 26. The Dragons won that match after winning two of three games (25 - 23 Dragons, 19 - 25 Bawlf, 15-10 Dragons). The Dragons will also play South Central at 3:15 pm today. On Friday November 27 the Dragons will play host team École Héritage at 9:00 am and Parkland Immanuel at 4:30 pm. Finals will be played on Saturday, November 28.

Pincher Creek's St. Michael's SV Boys Dragons emerged the 1A champions at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association South Zone tournament held November 12-14 at Lethbridge College.  In second place was Bow Island's Senator Gershaw Gators. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned third place. Congratulations to all three teams!

Sabres Girls host RCMP for an evening of volleyball

On Tuesday evening November 10 Livingstone's Sabres JV and SV Girls hosted Crowsnest RCMP members for some off-the-cuff post-season volleyball. The Sabres demonstrated high energy, and each set was close, but the RCMP won each of four sets played.

On Thursday October 29 Livingstone High School’s Sabres Girls volleyball team hosted Immanuel Christian School’s Eagles for the final home Sabres home game of the season. The Sabres were looking much improved from the previous week, but were defeated by the Eagles in both the JV and SV sets. The evening was interrupted by multiple fire alarms, which resulted in a temporary evacuation of the school while local firefighters assessed the situation. The cause of alarm was most likely a defective smoke detector, which was detecting smoke where there was no smoke. Local firefighters explained that this was possibly caused by dust that had settled on the alarm.

On Thursday October 29 Livingstone High School’s junior girls Sabres volleyball dream hosted Matthew Halton’s Hawks. Both teams were evenly matched, but the Hawks came out ahead in the end after winning all three sets.

Matthew Halton High School's JV and SV Girls volleyball teams hosted their Lethbridge Immanuel Christian High School Eagles counterparts on the evening of October 26. The Eagles dominated, winning 5 of 6 sets played, by wide margins.  The Hawks have talent and potential, but really only clicked consistently during the third JV set, which they won by three points.

On Wednesday October 28 the Crowsnest Pass Panthers JV and SV boys volleyball teams played against Livingstone’s Sabres at Livingstone High School in Lundbreck. The JV Sabres won their first two sets against the Panthers. However, the Panthers showed their real potential in the third set, earning their own win. The SV Sabres won three out of four sets.

Livingstone School's JV and SV Girls Sabres hosted their St. Michael's School Dragons counterparts for an evening of volleyball on October 22.  Prior to the event, Mrs. Mary Krizan was presented with a hoodie that represented her dual allegiances.  She's the vice-principal at Livingstone School and has a daughter who plays for the Dragons.  She's pictured above in her new hoodie posing between the two teams after the games were concluded.

On Thursday October 22 the Jr A boys Dragons hosted Piikani for an evening of volleyball. Piikani’s boys improved in each set; their rallies got longer, and they put the ball out much less by the final set. The A boys Dragons are a strong team, however, and played consistently, winning all three sets.

Livingstone High School was the place to be for JV and SV volleyball on election night, Monday October 19. The Sabres Girls hosted Fort Macleod's F.P. Walshe Flyers.  The Flyers won all six sets.

Saint Michael’s featured volleyball on the evening of Wednesday October 21, when the JV and SV boys Dragons hosted the Flyers. The JV Dragons lost all three sets played. However, the SV Dragons were in good form, defeating the Flyers in three out of four close sets.

On Thursday October 15 the Livingstone Sabres hosted volleyball teams from F.P. Walshe. At 4:30 Livingstone’s junior girls played F.P. Walshe 8, and defeated them in two of three sets. Later in the evening the JV and SV boys played their Flyers counterparts. The JV Sabres won two out of three sets. The SV Sabres played much better than the previous week, but were defeated in 3 out of four sets.
