Joyce Sasse - “You will strop by and visit often,” my elderly neighbour implored as he got out of the car. “Don’t forget.”

The request was touching. We had come home from the picnic shortly after eating because he was feeling chilled, a bit confused, and quite stumbly. Both he and his wife were frightened.

GriefShare program offered at Abundant Springs Community Church

Community members who have experienced the death of a family member or friend are invited to register for the GriefShare program held at Abundant Springs Community Church. 

This program, open to people of all backgrounds, features Christ-centered, biblical teaching that focuses on grief topics associated with the death of a loved one. The video seminar features nationally respected grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was seen in the video.

Davis - According to Town of Pincher Creek Chief Administrative Officer Laurie Wilgosh's 2018 Second Quarter Report, presented to council on September 5, long-time Town Director of Community Services Diane Burt-Stuckey "will be leaving once the position has been filled later this fall. Quite a few applications were received and interviews will be conducted in early September. Given Diane's long and immense contribution to the Town, these will be big shoes to fill. Other potential positions and or restructuring is also being considered by the manager's of all departments."

Toni Lucas - The 2018 Pincher Creek Rodeo Parade was held Saturday, August 18, after the Humane Society Pancake Breakfast. The pancake breakfast was hosted by councillors from both the Town and MD.  The parade featured 'Chose Your Own Adventure' as the theme. The Chamber of Commerce hosts the parade every year. Parade organizer and Chamber Administrator Ola Crook said, "There were some great ideas on the theme. The floats were really awesome this year." Even the smoke of the local fires hanging in the air did not deter the crowds.

Walk for MS to raise a mom's spirits

Toni Lucas - Jeff Wishart, a carpenter from Oakland Manitoba, was hiking along Highway 3 close to Pincher Creek on Friday, August 31. The reason for his journey was to cheer up his mom who has Multiple Sclerosis and to raise awareness. He started his quest on July 4, and hopes to make it to the west coast. "I had to make her be happy." Wishart feels his walk gives her something other than her disease to focus on. "She is proud but then she is worried too. But it is better than her stewing on this disease. Mom still worries, but at least it isn't about herself."

The big red barn gets a new coat of paint in time for winter

Heritage Acres with the support of Federated Co-op and their 'Communities in Full Colour'  program and a whole lot of volunteers painted the Vogelaar/Zoeteman barn ranch red on August 9 and 10. Member of Parliament for Foothills Alberta John Barlow was one of the many volunteers who donned work clothes to lend a helping hand.   A contractor painted the higher portions of the project.  The barn was moved to Heritage Acres in 2014, and has since been  re-roofed, windows have been replaced, and the new coat of paing finishes the exterior.  Related link:  The Barn Move

Calf scramble winner happy to be 'in the running'

Toni Lucas - In a matter of minutes at the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo on Saturday August 18th  the Anderson family won two bikes during the Windyview calf scramble. Eight-year-old Jake won in the 9 and under category, and 11-year-old Carter won in the ages 10-12 run. Both brothers were delighted with their bikes.

Piikani Nation's Shawna Morning Bull was recently announced as the winner of the Chief David Crowchild Memorial Award, which was presented to her by Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi on June 20 at Calgary City Hall during National Indigenous Peoples Day and Aboriginal Awareness Week . 

“I am extremely honored to be receiving such an important award as the Chief David Crowchild Award. I am earnestly grateful for this recognition I have received for my work in the indigenous and non-indigenous community of and the surrounding communities of Mohkinstsis (Calgary). Humbled to my peers that they feel I deserve this honour and thankful for their ongoing encouragement for the work I do.” - Shawna Morning Bull

Heritage Acres holds 2018 Annual Show

Toni Lucas - Heritage Acres held their 2018 Annual Show over the August long weekend, and celebrated how the stationary engine made people's lives easier by mechanizing farming related tasks. It also indirectly celebrated families. Everywhere on the extensive grounds families were enjoying time with each other and the multitudinous exhibits. Children were enjoying activities like rope making and trying out pedal and miniature tractors. Adults enjoyed the machines, the cool weather, and the nostalgia.

Joyce Sasse - I spent time this morning at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens meditating on the memories of my oldest mentor and friend. Yesterday, amid family and friends, we celebrated a life that reached back 97 years.

She was a positive, joyous, forward-thinking person whose presence electrified any gathering. Her motto was to celebrate even the tiniest moments of life.

Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek was the fourth of six communities visited by Communities in Bloom International Challenge Medium Category Judges Larry Hall (from Canada) and Bernadette Solon (from Ireland). They visited July 15-17 and evaluated over 80% of the town and were supplied with information from town employees and service groups along the way. Five communities of similar size to ours and in the same categoryare in Canada, the USA, and Croatia.

Toni Lucas - Southern Nights at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is an ever-changing cornucopia of music, education and entertainment throughout the summer on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights through September 1.  On Friday, July 20, the 'Hangfire Gang' Player-Improv Theatre from Lethbridge sent two of their players our way to entertain.  The duo did skits and improvisational comedy.  They posed as town pioneer A.E. Cox and his daughter Millie.  They involved the audience in their free wheeling fun.  along with many other skits the two improvised a wedding skit with a volunteer from the audience, and did a bit about buying a medicinal tonic from a traveling salesman.

The entertainment was funny, family friendly, and had some historical references thrown in. Actors Dave Gabert and Alli Price said this was their first historical improv attempt. Price said it was an inspirational setting.   Gabert had visited the area previously and enjoyed that the weather allowed them to range outdoors, taking the play to two different areas of the grounds for stages.

KBPV Curator Farley Wuth explained the set up for Southern Nights for the summer is to have a speaker on Thursdays, Fridays are more about arts and culture, and Saturdays are generally musical.  Almost all of the nights have children's activities planned.  "These are family-friendly events, meant for all ages or the whole family to enjoy".

July 2018 Communities In Bloom Yard of the Month - Grace and Dan Sibbald

Arianna Korbett - Grace and Dan Sibbald are the winners of July’s Yard of the Month, with their work done beautifying and cleaning up their yard. The Communities in Bloom judges presented them with the Yard of the Month sign as well as a Scotts Miracle Gro package. Coming in second place was Kristine Beer, showing that a small yard can be cleaned up nicely and bring character to any home. She was also awarded a Scotts Miracle Gro package.

2018 Beauvais Lake Metis Youth and Elder Gathering

Roxy Debroux - In Metis culture, both the youth and the elders are honored. Between July 3 and 6th, this honoring took place at the heart of Metis culture in the area, Beauvais Lake Provincial Park. Many gathered at the Homestead Group camp to interact with one another, teach, and learn.

Pincher Creek spray park opens

Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek's new spray park opened to the public on July 1 with a ceremony at its site behind the pool, the culmination of almost 5 years of effort and consultations.  Mayor Don Anderberg had changed into less formal wear after the Canada Day celebrations at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, looking ready for the beach.  "I am pleased to announce that the spray park is within budget and paid in full," he said during his opening remarks. He explained the process of how the park came to be, and who donated toward making it a reality.  He praised the efforts of the individuals, organizational groups, contractors, and town staff.  One of the interesting points he shared was the spray park has a water re-circulation system, which greatly decreases water consumption.  "That increased the cost, but ultimately is the proper thing to do."  Jen Draper and Billi Rigaux, who spearheaded the initiative and are members of the Spray Park committee, were also invited to speak. They were both gratified to see their efforts come to fruition.

2018 Canada Day in Pincher Creek

Toni Lucas - Canada Day 2018 in Pincher Creek included waterworks and fireworks, sun and clouds, dancing and food.  Events began at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV), followed by the grand opening of the new spray park behind the pool, and ending in the evening at the Ag Grounds (or the hills surrounding Pincher Creek) for a fireworks display.

But the focus that I see is the tidiness aspect. Toni Lucas - Judging for Pincher Creek's bid in the Communities In Bloom International Challenge will take place July 16. Town of Pincher Creek Director of Community Services Diane Burt-Stuckey said, "It's an honour to even be involved in the program at this level, and making the community a better place to live is really what it's all about." Pincher Creek won at the national level (2009), and the Class of Champions (2015) against other Canadian communities at the same category of size. The first international challenge the town competed in was in 2016 where Pincher Creek won Honourable Mention. "I was completely floored. It was very encouraging."
