Chinook Arch Regional Library System - How did we get here? This is a question on many Albertans’ minds regarding the opioid crisis. The issue is widespread its effects can be seen across southwest communities - both urban and rural.
Luckily, libraries across southwest Alberta are answering the call for factual and relevant information through upcoming Opioid Information Sessions, which will take place this fall. The sessions have been coordinated through Chinook Arch Regional Library System, thanks to a grant received from the Government of Alberta’s Opioid Response Public Awareness Grants for Communities, which is administered by the Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN).
RCMP Alberta - At approximately 3:30 pm April 18 Taber RCMP and Emergency Services were called to the scene of a single vehicle roll over on Highway 513 at the intersection of Range Road 140, south of Grassy Lakes. The female driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two of the three vehicle passengers were taken by ground ambulance to the local hospital. The third passenger was taken by STARS Air Ambulance, with the assistance of HALO, to hospital in Calgary.
RCMP Alberta - A child has died following a two vehicle collision on Highway 36 North of Taber.
On July 10 at 9:25 pm, Taber RCMP along with Taber Fire and Emergency Services, Alberta EMS Bow Island RCMP and Lethbridge RCMP traffic services responded to a collision between a Volkswagen Jetta and a Ford F-150 on Highway 36 at the intersection with Range Road 110.

C. Davis/T. Lucas - A report prepared for the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association by University of Lethbridge Department of Economics Professor Kien C. Tran, Ph.D. was completed on April 22 2017 and unveiled to the public on May 5. The report "presents the results of an economic feasibility analysis to determine the costs and benefits associated with twinning construction of the remaining (approximately) 220 kilometers of Alberta Highway 3 known as Crowsnest Pass Highway. The main benefits that accrue from twinning Highway 3 include not only for safety improvement/time saving but also for increase in social/economic activities, tourism and agricultural needs." According to Tran's report, the results of the report's cost-benefit analysis "shows that for each dollar spent on this project, there is $2.97 in benefits which translates into the internal rate of return of 12.3%. Consequently, for a public infrastructure investment, these results are highly significant and demonstrate the worthiness of the twinning investment project."
Chris Davis - Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) hosted the Halton Hawks 2017 Alberta Schools Athletic Association nine game B Boys Basketball Tournament on January 27/28. Six teams participated, including the Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons (STM), Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres (LHS), Fort Macleod's F.P. Walshe Flyers (FPW), Taber's D.A. Ferguson Dust Devils (DAF), and Claresholm's WCCHS Cobras.
Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned first place, undefeated in all their games. The Dust Devils earned second place, St. Michael's Dragons earned third place, and the Cobras won the consolation final.
RCMP Alberta – On December 9, 2016 Taber/Vauxhall RCMP conducted a search of a residence and seized property obtained by crime, a prohibited weapon and a large quantity of cocaine and methamphetamines of substantial value.
Chris Davis - The 2016 Halton Hawks Junior A and B Girls Volleyball Showdown was held at the Matthew Halton High School gymnasium last Friday and Saturday, with a total of 7 "A" and 6 "B" teams participating. The A teams (grade 8/9) were divided into two pools for the initial games of the round robin format invitational tournament. The B teams (grade 7/8) competed in one pool.
RCMP Alberta - Taber RCMP and emergency services responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 36 south of Highway 875 by Vauxhall on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at approximately 10:30 am. Preliminary investigation indicated a truck was driving northbound on Highway 36 when it crossed over into the southbound lane and collided with a semi-truck. At the time of the collision, the 61-year-old driver of the truck from Calgary sustained serious life threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Chris Davis - Matthew Halton's Senior Hawks placed second in Zones after a wide margin playoff win against Vulcan at home at Sproule Field on Tuesday May 24 against Vulcan's Hawks and an away Zones final loss against Taber on Monday May 30, resulting in Tier 3 Zones Silver for the Pincher Creek team. The Halton Hawks will be travelling to Lethbridge this weekend to compete in Provincials.
Rural students set to learn about dangers of impaired and distracted driving

Students in southwestern Alberta are gearing up to learn about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, and how good decisions can help prevent injuries.
Over the next three months, about 300 students from the Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod, Taber and Crowsnest Pass areas will join health professionals, police officers, paramedics and injury survivors at hospitals and community events as part of Alberta Health Services’ (AHS) Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) program.
This is the first time Pincher Creek has hosted the PARTY program.

Matthew Halton High School hosted their seventh annual Hawks Classic basketball tournament on February 18 - 20. Senior boys teams and senior girls teams were involved in two separate competitions, played in a round robin format over three days. Twelve teams were involved in the tournament; six of each sex. The Livingstone Sabres boys were undefeated throughout the tournament, including defeating St. Michael’s Dragons in the championship game. Pincher Creek's Dragons girls won two of their games, earning their place in the finals, but were defeated by Kainai’s Lady Warriors in the championship game.

Girls Dragons head coach John Lowry explained that his team includes girls attending Matthew Halton and St Michael's. "This year we've been the Dragons. Last year we wore both Dragons and Hawks uniforms. But this year we had enough girls that we have a Senior team and a JV team, so the senior team are wearing the Dragons uniforms, and then the JV are wearing the Hawks uniforms. Coach Lowry sid he was happy with the way his girls played in the tournament. "They came out, and they worked pretty hard. This Championship game was a little disappointing, but when you walk into a game like this anything can happen. We had a little bit of a rough start, a few extra fouls that we don't normally get, so that put us behind. But the season's been good for the girls. Unfortunately we're going to be seeing Kainai again either in Zones or in Post-Season or in both." Coach Lowry said he plans to work on decreasing the number of fouls his girls get to prepare for these coming games.

The boys Dragons are second in the Chinook league to the Sabres right now, an impressive feat considering they only have two grade twelve members. Head Coach for the Dragons Frank Welsch called his team "a strong group" and owed their successes to conditioning. "We've got lots of guy with good skills. Strong basketball players. If we can just get them clicking a little bit better I think we can beat anyone." Coach Welsch said that his team won't be playing the Sabres again in regular league play, but that they could be seeing the Sabres again up to three more times this year, at the League Tournament, hopefully at Provincials, and Zones.

Head Coach for the Livingstone Sabres Duane DeCock was less pleased than might be expected with his team's performance at the tournament. "This (Championship) game was a grind-out game. This season's been good. This wasn't particularly a great tournament. Our offense was kind of lacking in this game. Our shooting percentage was poor. We do a lot of shooting at practice, or it seems like it. But there's days where it just doesn't fall into place. Today was one of those." Coach DeCock called the Sabres defense their greatest strength, but said that his teams tried to do too much dribbling and too much shooting up on of the top. "We need to work it in more."

Do-or-die season is underway for high school football in Alberta. Pincher Creek's Senior Mustangs stepped a game closer to the big one with an October 20 win as the host team at the lovely Lethbridge University Community Stadium (LUCS) over Taber's W.R. Meyers Rebels. After a shaky first half for the Mustangs, the game came down to the final seconds as the Mustangs defended their five-yard line against the Rebels on a first down, with the Rebels needing a single touchdown to overcome the Mustangs' five point lead. Three plays later the Mustangs emerged victorious, defeating the Rebels 35-29. The Mustangs brought a crowd and were treated like conquering heroes as they left the field. It was a better showing for the Rebels than their game against the Mustangs at Matthew Halton Field on September 25, which ended in a 20-7 win for the Pincher Creek team.
The Crowsnest/Pincher Midget Huskies played their first two games as members of the Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) last weekend. On Friday evening they played their home and season opener at the Coleman rink, defeating Lethbridge White 3 by a score of 7-3. The next day they traveled to Taber, where they romped to a 14-1 win. These are tiering-round games, so the competition should (cross fingers) become a little more evenly matched once tiering is completed.
On Friday September 25 Pincher Creek’s senior Mustangs took to Halton field to face Taber's W.R. Myers Fighting Rebels, following up on the Mustangs' 33-0 win in High River last week. This was the Mustangs' first regular season game. The weather was warm and sunny, though the wind was blowing hard in the first half. It was a close game, but the Mustangs prevailed definitively, winning 20-7.
On May 20, 2015, seven fields in the counties of Warner, Forty Mile and Cardston were surveyed for stripe rust. Both winter wheat fields surveyed in the county of Warner had trace incidence of stripe rust (less than one leaf per square metre). Neither of the fields in Forty Mile County had any signs of stripe rust and the remaining three fields in Cardston also had no signs of rust.

Pincher Creek's Senior Varsity and Junior Varsity Hawks Girls squads hosted their Taber Rebels counterparts for a couple of feisty rugby games on the evening of May 8 at Sproule field. Unusual for rugby in this town, the weather co-operated, with blue skies above, very little wind, and an almost dry field.

Pincher Creek Senior Mustangs hosted the Taber Rebels at the Matthew Halton High School football field on Thursday, October 10.
The Mustangs had a sizable crowd supporting them for what was their last home game of the season. The Rebels kicked farther, they moved faster, and they hit harder. Mistakes were made by both teams, but Rebels were better able to take advantage of their opportunities.
