Southern Alberta RCMP wildfires summary

RCMP Alberta - In the late afternoon and evening hours on October 17, several communities across southern Alberta were impacted by severe, fast moving wildfires which were driven by extremely high winds. RCMP officers conducted evacuations of 10 communities in 6 counties/municipal districts. Rural residences and farms in these counties were also evacuated in many areas. These evacuations were carried out by officers in eight different RCMP detachments working in partnership with local firefighters, peace officers and citizens.

At this time, a full assessment of the damages resulting from these fires has not yet been completed. “The events of yesterday are unprecedented. We have never had emergencies and evacuations affecting so many communities at once.” says RCMP Chief Superintendent Tony Hamori, Officer in Charge of Southern Alberta District. “ I am proud of the efforts of our RCMP officers and employees and I thank all of our community partners for their significant role in managing these fires.”

A summary of each RCMP detachment’s current emergency status is provided below.

Grass fires in Strathmore area

RCMP Alberta - Strathmore RCMP are advising that two grass fires have ignited in the Strathmore area.  The first is located near Highway 910 and Range Road 264. Preliminary reports indicate a train caught fire near the Agrium Plant which in turn created a grass fire due to the extreme winds. The train did not derail. No injuries have been reported.  The second is located in the area of Highway 817 and Highway 24 near Sisksika Nation. Some residents in the rural area near the fire have been evacuated.

Also, be advised that Highway 1 is closed from Highway 21 to Range Road 214 due to the fires.

All evacuees or anyone concerned for their safety are asked to attend the Strathmore Civic Centre.

Details are limited at this time as the wildfire situation is changing rapidly. Additional information will be released as it becomes known. The RCMP appreciates Media's patience and assistance with keeping the public update.

Dangerous dirt bike stunt in a Strathmore school leads to charges

RCMP Alberta - Charges are pending against five individuals after a dangerous incident at a Strathmore school earlier today.  Shortly before 10:00 am, Strathmore RCMP were called to a report of a male riding a dirt bike through the halls of a school in the town of Strathmore. A male rode the dirt bike in and through the Holy Cross Collegiate High School and out at the other end of the Sacred Heart Academy Elementary School. Staff of the school followed the bike as it narrowly avoiding hitting students in the schools, to a nearby parking lot where a truck was waiting. Police arrested the driver of the bike in the parking lot without incident.

Further investigation by police identified several other individuals who assisted in the stunt. As a result, adults and 2 youths (students of the school) were arrested. All have been released from custody and charges of dangerous driving are pending.

Novice Chinooks still undefeated after barnburner tie with Strathmore

2016/17 Novice Chinooks

Chris Davis - Pincher Creek's Novice Chinooks have been having a remarkable season, and are currently in second place in their CAHL tier with a 10 win/3 tie record in the regular season.  The Chinooks were on home ice at the MCC Arena on Saturday January 28 when they hosted Strathmore's Storm, who are currently in third place in the same tier. The Chinooks came back from an 8-4 deficit at the end of the second period to tie the game 8-8.

Western Feedlots to suspend operations

Christian Davis - Alberta's Western Feedlots Ltd. is a custom cattle feeder operating feedlots near Strathmore, High River, and Mossleigh. According to their website, "Western Feedlots Ltd.’s shareholders have decided to voluntarily wind down cattle ownership and cattle feeding operations. Western will continue to feed and market the existing cattle and after they are marketed, Western will be suspending feedlot operations. Western will not be hiring employees, or purchasing feed grain or feeder cattle after that time. Western will continue farming operations for the foreseeable future."

Midget Huskies defeat Strathmore in first game of CAHL Playoffs, honor retiring players

Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies hosted Strathmore's Storm at the Memorial Community Centre Arena on Saturday evening February 20 for the first of a best-of-three Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) Midget Tier 1 first round playoff series.  After what could conservatively be called an exciting game the Huskies emerged with a 5-4 win.

The Midget Huskies played two home games against the Strathmore Storm, one on February 13 and one on Sunday February 14. The Huskies defeated the Storm in both games, one ending 5-2 and the other 4-2.
