Over seventy five people attended the Municipal District of Pincher Creek Number 9 All-Candidates forum hosted by SASCI at Pincher Creek's Heritage Inn on the evening of October 10. This was an opportunity for the public to find out more about the candidates and ask questions before the election that will be held on Monday October 21.

Proper ID required to vote in municipal elections

New for the 2013 Alberta municipal elections is a requirement for voters to provide proof of their identity and current residence in order to cast a ballot in local elections.

Providing identification that also displays a home address is the minimum requirement. Municipalities can expand the list of requirements, so it is very important for Albertans to check with their municipality to learn what the local requirements are.

Having been approached to run as an MD Councillor  and,  with  the  support  of  my  wife Sharon and my daughters Renea and Niki, I welcome the opportunity to represent the constituents of Division 1 and the Municipality of Pincher Creek.

As a long time rural resident of the MD who is active in the auction business and a member of our farming and ranching community, I feel that I have many strengths to support a position on council. Mark Barber acclaimed to Town Council

"I wanted to participate with the Town Council," said  Mark Barber, who was acclaimed to the position of Town Councillor this week. "I want to ensure that this wonderful community that we live in and participate in continues to grow in a positive direction."

Barber says that common sense in government is very important to him.  He believes that this is a safe and vibrant community and would like to see that continue.  He describes himself as fiscally conservative and believes strongly in ethical governance.

Barber started working in this community 12 years ago, commuting from Fernie for two years.  He then moved his family to Pincher Creek 10 years ago.  In Pincher Creek he has worked at Community Futures, Pincher Creek Credit Union, and is currently employed at Alberta Treasury Branch.

He was promoted to head office in Community Futures and would have had to relocate to Cochrane Alberta, a move that his family was not excited about.  "I was very fortunate that a position with ATB became available.  I've worked here for about two and a half years now."

Previous civic responsibilities:  Member of the Health Foundation, Pincher Creek Mustangs, Rotary, Chair of the Board of the United Church, and the Freestyle Club at Castle Mountain.

Reader reminds candidates to get permission before putting signs on private property

As election season approaches, I would like to remind candidates that if they would like to put signs up on private property, it would be a good idea to get permission from the land owner.  If you are not sure if the land is public, then figure it out.

We recently had a candidate put a sign on our business property as well as our personal property.  Most likely he believes it is an empty lot, or public property.

When in doubt, ask… you might be surprised with the conversation that follows.

I'm excited as all heck for getting the chance to be back in Council again," said Wayne Elliott, who was acclaimed  Town of Pincher Creek  Councillor on Monday September 23.  "I am disappointed at being acclaimed rather than voted in, but I am happy to represent Pincher Creek again."

"It will be awesome having a nice mix of new and experienced people around the table.  It's always refreshing to have fresh and new ides to banter about," Elliott said about the other acclaimed members.

Elliott considers himself to be a good listener and plans to keep open communications with the general public.  "Promoting my hometown is paramount.  I plan to do everything I can to do to keep the Town of Pincher Creek 'open for business'."

"A few of the organizations I have been active in are the 5 Pin Bowlers Association, Minor Hockey, and Minor Baseball.  I have also been a Member at Large for the Cemetery Committee and Communities in Bloom.  I have been trained by Municipal Affairs to be a member of the Assessment Review Board.

Doug Thornton is happy that he is one of the newly (unofficially) acclaimed Councillors for the Town of Pincher Creek.  "I really enjoyed the time I spent on council," said Doug Thornton about his time as a Pincher Creek Councillor from 2007 - 2010.  "I learned a lot then, and I think we can capitalize on what I learned about being on council, and what the Town's doing, working toward the future.  I'm for the town of Pincher Creek."  Thornton would like to see an increase in population and local businesses.

Thornton has been involved with the following organizations and boards:  Charter President of Rotary, President of the Chamber of Commerce at various different times, Pincher Creek Foundation Board, EMS Board, and Oldman Regional Services Commission (ORRSC).

Councillor Jackson to return to Town Council

Councillor Lorne Jackson was unofficially acclaimed to be a Councillor for the Town of Pincher Creek on September 23, 2013.  "I wish that there would have been an election for our council, I like and believe in the democratic process," said Jackson.  "It would have been nice to see an election.  At the same time I think it shows that the people of Pincher are satisfied with what they are seeing out of this council."  Councillor Jackson will be the only Councillor returning to the table from the current administration.  He may be joined by Ernie Olsen or Don Anderberg, who are also currently on council, Olsen as Mayor and Anderberg as councillor.  Both Olsen and Anderberg are running for Mayor in the upcoming election, as is Stanley Stoklosa.

When discussing the other Councillors that were acclaimed to the position of Town Council Jackson said "I think we'll have a good group."

Stanley Stoklosa announces candidacy for Mayor

Stanley Stoklosa is running for Pincher Creek Mayor in the election that is to be held on October 23. Some of key points that he feels strongly about is more affordable housing,  the fuel used in the municipality which is tendered at an annual bidding process, and maximizing the local Pincher Creek Airport by holding aviation training sessions.

Two all-candidates forums are scheduled for Pincher Creek ahead of the upcoming elections.

The first will be for those aspiring to Town of Pincher Creek council. It will be held on Thursday October 3. The second will be for those running for MD of Pincher Creek No. 9 Council will be held on Thursday October 10.

Shannon Scherger announces candidacy for LRSD school board trustee

Incumbent Shannon Scherger has announced she will be running again for Livingstone Range School Division #68 Ward 3 School Board Trustee again in the upcoming election.

The schools located in Ward 3 are: W.A. Day (K-3), G.R. Davis (4-6), F.P. Walshe (7-12), Fort Macleod; Canyon (K-6), Matthew Halton High (6-12), Pincher Creek; Spring Point Colony, Greenwood Colony, Ewelme Colony, Thompson Colony, Pincher Creek Colony and Waterton Colony Schools.

"The last 3 years, serving as Trustee for Livingstone Range School Division #68, has been very rewarding," says Scherger.  "I’m grateful to serve the public in the capacity of Trustee and I look forward to running for another term!  We are very lucky to have such amazing children in our communities and it is an honor to play a part in their education journey."

Clara Yagos announces candidacy for LRSD school board trustee

Clara Yagos has announced she is running  for School Board Trustee in Ward 2 of Crowsnest Pass and Livingstone Range School Division #68 in the upcoming election.

The schools located in Ward 2 are: Livingstone School (K-12), Isabelle Sellon (4-6), Horace Allen(K-3), Crowsnest Consolidated High School (7-12) and Livingstone Colony School.

Yagos is currently serving her first term as a trustee after being acclaimed in 2010.  She was a teacher and principal for 38 years and is now retired.  "This is my way of staying in education," said Yagos.  "I feel it is very important.  I believe in municipal involvement and I want to continue working on in this capacity."

Yagos is the Vice President of the Pincher Creek Woman's Emergency Shelter, and Advocate for the Ranchland Victim Services, President of the Pincher Creek Humane Society, involved in the Boys and Girls Club of the Crowsnest Pass, and is a member of the Crowsnest Pass 40 Developmental Assets Steering Committee.
