Experiential Learning Week continues to inspire MHHS students

Chris Davis - Experiential Learning Week (ELW) returned to Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) October 23-27. It's year five for the program, which engages students with hands-on learning experiences that are in part chosen by themselves. The courses were chosen by the students, narrowed down by their choices from an extensive list of possibilities. All grades at MHHS participated, and high school students were graded on their efforts. Regular educational programming is suspended at the school while ELW is ongoing.

Toni Lucas - On Saturday, May 27, 2017, Matthew Halton High School graduands attended a their Graduation Spring Celebration and Banquet at the Pincher Creek Community Hall. Earlier in the day they held their Cap and Gown Ceremony at the school itself where awards were bestowed and speeches were given.

Livingstone Range School Division  - Students from across Livingstone Range School Division and around the country are once again challenging themselves and their schoolmates in the annual Skills Canada Competitions, which bring young people together to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in trade and technology careers.

Irvin Provost - Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) hosted their bi-annual event, “Experiential Learning Week” during the first week of May. As part of MHHS’s learning initiative, the school offers students week-long courses that give a chance to students to experience hands experience to a student. As a student, I chose to participate in the school’s collaborative-course between MHHS and the University of Lethbridge. The activities of the trip included a campus tour, a chance to explore the facilities, and attend a class. Our course gave us the chance to meet with professors, who presented issues related to water. Overall, our week gave the nine of us a look at the transition between high school and post-secondary life.

Matthew Halton High School students on extended field trip to Vimy and other world wars sites in Europe

Chris Davis - 36 Matthew Halton High School students from grades 10-12 embarked on what promises to be a most memorable field trip on Friday April 7. They are on a 14-day educational adventure that will begin in Vimy, France before continuing on to other European sites relevant to Canada's contributions to both world wars, including tours of the Anne Frank House and the Auschwitz concentration/extermination camp. On Sunday April 9 they will join an estimated crowd of 25,000 people at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France for an event commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. More than 12,000 Canadian students will be in attendance.

Chris Davis, with supplied material - On April 3 Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) grade 10 student Irvin Provost was announced as a silver medal recipient of the annual Indigenous Shining Student Award, which celebrates First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) students who are shining examples in their communities "through embracing and respecting an Aboriginal perspective or world view." He was one of over 60 students nominated from schools across Alberta this year. According to an LRSD press release (excerpted extensively in this article), "Provost is the eldest of four children and has ancestry from both the Piikani and Kainai Nations. He is characterized as an optimistic and deeply thoughtful student with a positive work ethic and strong leadership skills. He has also demonstrated a gift for writing." Provost was honoured at the FNMI Youth Summit which was held at MHHS on Wednesday, April 5.

Matthew Halton to host fourth annual First Nations, Metis and Inuit Youth Summit

Livingstone Range School Division - Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek is preparing to play host to approximately 100 engaged young people for the fourth annual First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Youth Summit, taking place on Wednesday, April 5. Students from Kainai High School, Piikani High School, F.P Walshe School (Fort Macleod) and St. Michael’s School (Pincher Creek) will join MHHS students for a day focused on student development and leadership.

Chris Davis - The 2017 Chinook Basketball League 2017 Post Season Tournament was held March 2-4, co-hosted by Pincher Creek's St. Michael's and Matthew Halton High Schools.  Teams from 10 Chinook League member schools participated.  Kainai's Lady Warriors earned Gold in the Girls division.  St. Michael's Dragons earned Gold in the Boys division.  Second place Girls was earned by Matthew Halton's Hawks. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres Boys earned Silver.  Third place Girls went to St. Michael's Dragons and third place Boys went to Kainai's Warriors.  The league's year end banquet and awards were held on Friday evening, and is the subject of a separate story (click here).

Toni Lucas - The 2017 Chinook League Basketball Post Season Awards banquet was held on Friday evening March 3, at Matthew Halton School midway through the Chinook post season basketball tournament (that story soon).  Dinner was prepared from the Hawks Nest school cafeteria kitchen and served by volunteers.  After dinner Hawks coach/Chinook League organizer Randy Whitehead acted as Master of Ceremonies and handed out the awards.

Dragons Boys and Kainai Girls earn gold at 2017 Chinook League Post Season Basketball Tournament

The 2017 Chinook Basketball League Post Season Tournament and Awards Banquet was held last weekend, with games at St. Michael's and Matthew Halton School. St. Michael's Dragons Boys and Kainai's Lady Warrior earned Gold. Livingstone's Sabres Boys and the Halton Hawks Girls* earned Silver. Chris Davis - Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) hosted the Halton Hawks 2017 Alberta Schools Athletic Association nine game B Boys Basketball Tournament on January 27/28. Six teams participated, including the Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons (STM), Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres (LHS), Fort Macleod's F.P. Walshe Flyers (FPW), Taber's D.A. Ferguson Dust Devils (DAF), and Claresholm's WCCHS Cobras.

Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned first place, undefeated in all their games. The Dust Devils earned second place, St. Michael's Dragons earned third place, and the Cobras won the consolation final.

Family Literacy Day celebrated at Matthew Halton High School

Toni Lucas - Matthew Halton High School celebrated Family Literacy Day on Friday, January 27 with a range of events including a story writing workshop and free reading time.  One of the highlights off the day was a session with prolific Alberta author David Poulsen, who read from his latest book, 'And Then The Sky Exploded', followed by an informal question and answer period and book signing session.

Bear Snores On dramatic presentation

Another highlight the finale of the day. when grade 7 drama students performed three dramatic presentations:  'Bear Snores On', 'The Absolute True Story of the Three Little Pigs', and 'Click, Clack, Moo Cows Type', based on popular children's books.

MHHS English students create Beauvais Lake multimedia projects

Chris Davis - Beginning in March of 2016, Matthew Halton High School English 20-1 students under the direction of English Teacher Clair Hockley began a project in conjunction with Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) and SouthWest Alberta Parks. Students explored Beauvais Lake Provincial Park west of Pincher Creek and were encouraged to choose areas of interest to explore before completing several multimedia projects based on those interests. Various different subjects were addressed, including Animals, Landforms, People, Trees, and Wonders of Beauvais Lakes. Another project was about Exploring Beauvais Lake in Winter. There was also a video project (see link below) and an interpretive sign project. The sign was unveiled at an event held on Friday, January 20.

Chris Davis - Last Friday and Saturday the Matthew Halton Gym was the busy site of the 2017 Halton Hawks Junior Girls A and B invitational basketball tournament.  12 teams played in a total of four pools for preliminary games before contesting in A and B final games.

Dragons vs Hawks

Chris Davis -  Early into the 2016/17 season, Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres are in first place in the Chinook Basketball League's standings, undefeated in four games.  Coalhurst's Trojans are in second with three wins and one loss (to the Sabres).  St. Michael's Dragons are currently in third place, undefeated in three games.  Matthew Halton's Hawks are still looking for a win after four games.

Dragons win post season A Boys volleyball tournament

Chris Davis - On Friday October 28 four area teams converged at the Matthew Halton High School gym in Pincher Creek for the A Boys post season volleyball tournament. Participating teams included St. Michael's Dragons, Livingstone's Sabres, the Crowsnest Pass Panthers, and hosts the Matthew Halton Hawks. After four games, St. Michael's A Boys Dragons emerged as the Post Season champions after a tough three sets against the Panthers. The Dragons were also first in the South Western Junior High Athletic Association (SWJHAA) league this season.
