859 Crowsnest Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets

Flight Sergeant Chase Lincez was presented with the Air Cadet Long Service Medal on Monday night, May 9th. It reflects 4 years of hard work in the cadet program, during which he has risen to the most senior cadet position of Squadron Warrant Officer. John Anderson of the Coleman Legion made the presentation, himself a former Commanding Officer with 859 Crowsnest Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Flight Sergeant Lincez is a past recipient of the Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Medal recognizing a high degree of leadership and fitness, as well as the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence recognizing leadership and volunteerism.

859 Crowsnest Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets

Cadets from 859 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron held their 38th  Annual Ceremonial Review Parade in Blairmore the evening of June 15th.  Mr. Wayne Shaw, Deputy Commander for District 6 of the Royal Canadian Legion was on hand to inspect cadets and take the salute during the parade’s march past.  Mr. Shaw served for over 32 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, including over 4000 hours of flight time as a Loadmaster in the Air Force.  The Annual Ceremonial Review marks the symbolic end to local training that runs between September and June. Representatives of the Air Cadet League, Squadron Sponsoring Committee, and of the Coleman, Blairmore, Bellevue and Pincher Creek Legions were on hand to help celebrate the occasion.

859 Crowsnest Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets

The Military Police Air Cadets from 859 Squadron welcomed back their returning members and introduced themselves to potential recruits with a pizza night at the Coleman Legion on Monday night, September 22nd. A number of potential recruits from both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek attended to learn more, and each left with an application package and the intent to register.

Cadets from 859 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron learned aircrew survival training over the weekend of June 6th – 8th. The Cowley Glider Strip was used as the base of their training.

Friday evening commenced with a small candlelight ceremony at sunset to commemorate the anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. In recognition of the cadet squadron’s affiliation with the RCAF Military Police, a moment of silence was observed for the 3 fallen RCMP members in New Brunswick as well.

Major Ghislain Leroux, Commanding Officer of 1 Military Police Squadron in Cold Lake AB, was on hand to inspect local air cadets parading on Monday the 9th of June. This was 859 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron’s 37th Annual Ceremonial Review marking the symbolic end to local training that runs between September and June.

Flight Sergeant Nigal Smith was promoted to Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) during the closing parade of air cadet training on April 7th. This is WO2 Smith’s 5th year in the cadet program and he is currently undergoing Level 5 training. Cadets typically complete one training level per school year. The Level 5 training program is particularly demanding, requiring an increase in community volunteering to 45 hours in total. He is also expected to participate in an average of 7 hours of physical activity per week and complete several self-study modules.

Members of the 859 Crowsnest Squadron Air Cadets (which included Pincher Creek members) will be conducting a door to door poppy drive on Saturday, November 9 along with members of 4H and Girl Guides. 

Members of the 2309 Fort Macleod Army Cadets (which also includes Pincher Creek members) did a poppy drive earlier in the week in Fort Macleod. The cadets do this to raise awareness, and to make it possible for everyone to celebrate Remembrance Day, whether they can attend a formal ceremony or not.

• Doors open at 10:30 am Monday, November 11, 2013. Service and moment of silence to begin at 11 am.
• Ceremony at the Pincher Creek Community Hall, followed by social events at the Pincher Creek Legion.

• Twin Butte Community Hall and Veteran's Memorial
• Tea and Social to follow.

On November 5, the Army Cadet Corp. 2309 of Fort Macleod took to the streets of Pincher Creek. Volunteers from the Corps gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion #43 to pick up and distribute poppies. These young men and women braved the cold to go door to door, selling poppies for donations.
