Triple fatality on Hwy 22 near Priddis

RCMP Alberta – This morning at 3:10 a.m., Turner Valley RCMP responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 22 west of Priddis Valley Road.

As a result of the collision three adults are deceased, and one adult has been transported to a hospital via STARS Air Ambulance.

Two vehicles were travelling on Highway 22 in opposite directions and collided head-on.  The 26-year-old male driver and his 31-year-old female passenger in a car were both declared deceased on scene.  The 34-year-old male driver of an SUV was also declared deceased while the 27-year-old female passenger of the SUV was transported to a Calgary hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

Investigation into this collision continues by the RCMP Collision Analyst.  Resources from Okotoks and Cochrane RCMP provided assistance.

The RCMP have now re-opened the highway to travel.

Cochrane RCMP responding to numerous weather related accidents

RCMP Alberta - The RCMP out of Cochrane and surrounding detachments are asking the public to travel with extreme caution and to stay off the roads if travel is not completely necessary. Highway 22 and secondary roads are covered in black ice and blowing snow in the area is causing near whiteout conditions.

Chris Davis - Forestry area closures announced yesterday are still in effect for the Calgary Forest Area, south of Highway 532 to the US border and west to the BC border,  Alberta Fire Control Zones 1, 2, and 3, including Waterton Lakes National Park and Castle Wildland Provincial Park. Highway 532 is just north of Chain Lakes and intersects with Highway 22. Highway 22 and Highway 3 remain open for traffic. Pincher Creek Emergency Services is conducting a risk appraisal at this time.  No evacuations have been ordered, but access to most affected areas is restricted to those with permits, with the exception of the communities of Hazell, Sentinel, Tecumseh, Coleman, Bushtown, Blairmore, Frank, Hillcrest Mines, Bellevue, and Burmis.  Click here for a list of locations to obtain an access permit.

Chris Davis - Earlier this week, early Tuesday afternoon, Toni and I were driving on Highway 22 when we were dramatically reminded of the fragility of life and the kindnesses and unkindnesses of strangers.  It so disturbed me that I feel compelled to break away from my usual intended style of keeping some distance from the stories I write.

Body found on Highway 22 near Cochrane, Traffic re-routed for investigation

Update: Cochrane RCMP advise that Highway 22 between the Highway 8 roundabout and Lower Springbank Road is now open to all traffic both north and south bound. Emergency Services have cleared from scene and Calgary Police Service continues to investigate the incident.
RCMP Alberta - A body was found this morning in the ditch of Highway 22, north of the Highway 8 traffic circle. RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigators and Forensics investigators are on the scene along with Cochrane RCMP. The investigation requires that traffic on highway 22 will be re-routed between Highway 1 and Highway 8. Motorists travelling in that area are asked to find an alternate route, such as Sarcee trail or Range Road 33 at Calaway Park.

Two tractor trailers end up in the ditch on Hwy 22 due to high winds

Toni Lucas - Recent high winds resulted in two separate incidents where tractor trailers ended up in the east ditch of Highway 22.  Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) including Lundbreck Fire Hall responded to both incidents, which occurred on Highway 22 approximately 10 kilometres north of the Highway 3 junction, close to township Road 8-4.

Fatal MVC on Highway 22 north of Maycroft

Crowsnest Pass RCMP - On October 9, 2016 at approximately 11:45 am Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to motor vehicle incident involving two vehicles on Highway 22, approximately 50 kilometres north of Maycroft, AB. The incident occurred after a northbound sedan went into the opposing traffic lane and collided with a southbound SUV. The driver and lone occupant of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and lone occupant of the SUV was airlifted by STARS.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time, pending notification of family.

The RCMP's investigation into the accident is still ongoing.

Serious MVC on Hwy 22

RCMP Alberta - On September 23, 2016, at 7:19 a.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a complaint of a serious collision on Highway 22 north of the intersection with River Heights Drive. A white Toyota SUV collided with a semi truck hauling a load of lumber. The female driver of the SUV has been identified and is a 34 year old female from Cochrane, AB. Her name will not be released at this time. This female was trapped inside her vehicle after the collision occurred. The Cochrane Fire Department removed her from the vehicle and she was transported to the Foothills Hospital via ground ambulance where she remains in serious and life threatening condition. The driver of the semi truck was not injured.

Oldman River Bridge on Highway 22 open for business

According to a tweet today by @511Alberta, repairs have been completed to the Oldman River Bridge crossing on Highway 22, north of Highway 3 near Maycroft.  

Heavy vehicular traffic was particularly restricted during the repair process, with heavy loads being diverted  into the backroads of the lower westward Porcupines.  All restrictions imposed during the repair process have now been lifted.

Toni Lucas - On Sunday afternoon December 15 at 12:09 pm Crowsnest Pass RCMP issued a public advisory that due to very strong winds along Highway 22 from Highway 3 to Highway 532 (Chain Lakes area), any vehicles towing trailers were advised to not travel on Highway 22.
