Toni Lucas - Livingstone School held their annual Spaghetti Night graduation fundraiser in the Cowley Hall on Friday evening, November 24. The school's twelve graduands served dinner to over 200 people. This is the main fundraiser for the Livingstone School graduation class and pays for photos, decorations, hall rental, and other expenditures. The Spaghetti Night event featured draws, a silent auction including gift baskets, Christmas themed decorations, and other items. The evening came to a sweet conclusion with Bob Westrop auctioning off a variety of desserts prepared by the graduating class or their families. Pies, cakes, cupcakes, trifles and themes made it so no matter what your tastes there was something to tempt you.  Several desserts were auctioned for more than $200 each, with one 2018-themed rainbow cake shown by Kelsey Norman going for an astounding $1,000.

Toni Lucas - Lundbreck's Livingstone School held their 2017 Awards Ceremony last month. Assistant Principal Mrs. Mary Krizan aced as the MC for the evening as the school celebrated achievements by students in grade 7 through grade 12 in the areas of academics, athletics, and special awards.

Blake Friesen, Livingstone School - Maker Day. One of the three Sabre Days we have per year. As a passive observer tasked with recording the day, I walk into the art room where people will be creating medieval weapons and armour. After a long and boring -- but ultimately necessary, as proven by “the incident” that occurred fifteen minutes later -- safety talk, people head off to collect materials, and the first thing I hear is “I need a secret stash of cardboard.” students made these weapons chiefly out of cardboard, duct tape, and spray paint. We’ve experienced everything from outdoor adventures to smearing paint and throwing around sticky notes until you have something presentable. (This is called “art”.) Alex Hartgerink, Livingstone School - Boredom during family vacations: the deadly disease that kills children. Wait, maybe it’s killing parents. Well, either way, we need a solution, so that’s what these children are looking for. The first thing that happened on the morning of our third and last Sabre Day was a meeting. The children were asked what they hated most about long road trips. They conversed with partners and then shared them with the group. Some were actually pretty funny. My brother, who happened to be in this session, immediately said, “I hate my sisters.” Thanks, kid. Chase whined about how trips are too slow. McKinley said that she can never find a comfortable position to sleep in and she gets car sick. Seandra was saying that her sister always lies her head on her shoulder.

Chris Davis - The 2017 Chinook Basketball League 2017 Post Season Tournament was held March 2-4, co-hosted by Pincher Creek's St. Michael's and Matthew Halton High Schools.  Teams from 10 Chinook League member schools participated.  Kainai's Lady Warriors earned Gold in the Girls division.  St. Michael's Dragons earned Gold in the Boys division.  Second place Girls was earned by Matthew Halton's Hawks. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres Boys earned Silver.  Third place Girls went to St. Michael's Dragons and third place Boys went to Kainai's Warriors.  The league's year end banquet and awards were held on Friday evening, and is the subject of a separate story (click here).

Toni Lucas - The 2017 Chinook League Basketball Post Season Awards banquet was held on Friday evening March 3, at Matthew Halton School midway through the Chinook post season basketball tournament (that story soon).  Dinner was prepared from the Hawks Nest school cafeteria kitchen and served by volunteers.  After dinner Hawks coach/Chinook League organizer Randy Whitehead acted as Master of Ceremonies and handed out the awards.

Chris Davis - On February 28 a special ceremony was held at the St. Michael's School's Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium to honor the members of the 2017 SV Boys Volleyball team, which included member of Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres and St. Michael's Dragons. The team earned third place at provincials and were also awarded the provincial Sportsmanship banner.

The 2017 Chinook Basketball League Post Season Tournament and Awards Banquet was held last weekend, with games at St. Michael's and Matthew Halton School. St. Michael's Dragons Boys and Kainai's Lady Warrior earned Gold. Livingstone's Sabres Boys and the Halton Hawks Girls* earned Silver. Chris Davis - Lundbreck's Livingstone School hosted the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association South Zone Junior A Boys (grades 8 and 9) Basketball Tournament on February 17/18. Eight teams participated, including Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres, Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Magrath's Zeniths, Claresholm's Willow Creek Cobras, Cardston Country's Mountain View Grizzlies, Christ the King Academy from Brooks, Crowsnest Pass' Panthers, and Medicine Hat's Alexandra M.S. Jayhawks. A total of 12 games were played.

Chris Davis - Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) hosted the Halton Hawks 2017 Alberta Schools Athletic Association nine game B Boys Basketball Tournament on January 27/28. Six teams participated, including the Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons (STM), Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres (LHS), Fort Macleod's F.P. Walshe Flyers (FPW), Taber's D.A. Ferguson Dust Devils (DAF), and Claresholm's WCCHS Cobras.

Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned first place, undefeated in all their games. The Dust Devils earned second place, St. Michael's Dragons earned third place, and the Cobras won the consolation final.

Livingstone Science Fair 2017

Toni Lucas - Livingstone School held their annual School Science Fair on Monday, January 30 for students in grades 1 - 9. Participation was voluntary and the students chose their own projects based on their interests. Many chose to work alone, however their were some groups of two or more student who collaborated to do a presentation. There was a wide range of displays and demonstrations, and many of the students stayed with their booths to explain what their findings were. Among the many guests, Livingstone Range School Division Trustee Clara Yagos was in attendance.

Chinook boys basketball - Sabres win tournament, defeat Kainai

Chris Davis - Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres JV Boys Basketball team travelled to High River for a AA tournament on the weekend , where they defeated host team Notre Dame in the final to earn first place.  On Monday evening the Senior Sabres squad hosted Kainai at the Livingstone School gym, winning 65-55 after four very competitive quarters.

Chris Davis - Last Friday and Saturday the Matthew Halton Gym was the busy site of the 2017 Halton Hawks Junior Girls A and B invitational basketball tournament.  12 teams played in a total of four pools for preliminary games before contesting in A and B final games.

Chris Davis -  Early into the 2016/17 season, Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres are in first place in the Chinook Basketball League's standings, undefeated in four games.  Coalhurst's Trojans are in second with three wins and one loss (to the Sabres).  St. Michael's Dragons are currently in third place, undefeated in three games.  Matthew Halton's Hawks are still looking for a win after four games.

Livingstone Ski Academy hits the slopes

Toni Lucas - Livingstone School's Livingstone Ski Academy from the slopes as a class at Castle Mountain Ski Resort for the first time on Friday December 16, 2017. It was also opening day for the 2016/17 season at Castle.  The students had about two weeks of training time and preparation before they got to strap on their skis and tackle the resort's slopes. The Ski Academy is a skills-based program encompassing freestyle and downhill training at recreational and more competitive levels. Principal Chad Jensen said "This was an amazing day. A lot of work was put in to get to here."

Toni Lucas - Livingstone School held their annual Spaghetti Night graduation fundraiser in the Cowley Hall on Friday, December 9.  The nine graduands served dinner to close to 150 people. This is the main fundraiser for the Livingstone School graduation class and pays for photos, decorations, hall rental, and other expenditures.  The Spaghetti Night event hosted draws, a silent auction and Bob Westrop auctioned off a variety of desserts with several going for more than $200 per dessert, and with one special Kit Kat cake going for an astounding $525.
