Third Place - St. Miachael's Bears (Forty Mile Region)

Toni Lucas - The 2017 Junior High South Zone Junior High Athletic Association (SZJHAA) Boys 2J Zones Volleyball Tournament was held at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek on November 17 and 18. The areas included southern Alberta with Medicine Hat region represented by the Seven Persons Spartans, the County of Vulcan was represented by the Brant Christian Eagles, Forty Mile Region was represented by the Bow Island St. Michael’s Bears, and Far West Region was represented by Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres and the host team, Pincher Creek's St. Michael’s Dragons. Each team got the opportunity to play a minimum of 8 sets to determine who got to go to the playoff round. Ultimately, The Spartans took home the gold, the Dragons earned silver and the Bears earned bronze.

Blue-green Algae (Cyanobacteria) bloom advisory issued for Yellow Lake

Alberta Health Services -  A blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom has been identified in Yellow Lake (near Bow Island). Residents living near the shores of this lake, as well as visitors to this lake, are advised to take the following precautions:

• Avoid all contact with blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible.
• Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is visible. 
• Do not feed whole fish or fish trimmings from this lake to your pets.
• Consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from this lake, as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver. (People can safely consume fish fillets from this lake).

Midget Huskies end regular season with a tie and a win, honour retiring players

Chris Davis - Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies finished a remarkable regular season with two home games at the MCC arena last weekend.  They tied Bassano 4-4 on Friday evening,  They defeated long-time rivals Bow Island/Foremost 4-2 on Saturday, a after an intense game that included a raucous third period.  After the game the Huskies held a ceremony to honour their five retiring players.  Nicholas Jordan, Chase Snider, Jesson Luco, Brandt Sabo, and Tyson Goodreau are set to graduate this year and move on into adult life.  Each received a jersey and an ovation, thanking them for their years of contributions to Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass minor hockey.  Long-time Coach Kent Goodreau was also thanked.  His boys have now grown up and it seems likely he will retire from the Pincher Creek bench.

Southern Alberta communities awarded over $4.8 million in federal funding, including $463,000 for Pincher Creek spray park

Davis - Western Economic Diversification Canada yesterday announced a total federal investment of $4,899,327 in grants from three different programs, the 150 Community Infrastructure Program. and Canadian Heritage’s Canada 150 Fund and Canada Cultural Spaces Fund for ten southern Alberta projects "that celebrate our communities and shared heritage" by helping those communities "modernize local recreation facilities, as well as improve social and cultural infrastructure and programs."

Among those projects, the Town of Pincher Creek was awarded a Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant of $463,000 to enhance the Pincher Creek Multi-Purpose Facility on Main Street with the addition of a spray park, water re-circulation system, water slide, and landscaping. According to the Town, the facility enhancement will be installed to the north of the facility. "The Town of Pincher Creek has budgeted up to one million dollars for this project including the grant, with an additional contingency for spray park donations. The Town of Pincher Creek is aiming to have the spray park ready for operation in celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday on July 1st, 2017 and the remainder to be complete by December 31, 2017."

Minor Cypress County collision involving police vehicle

RCMP Alberta - This morning at 8:30 am, an RCMP police vehicle was involved in a collision on Highway 3 in Cypress County. The police vehicle was driving eastbound, passing Township 120. A truck turning on to Highway 3 from Township 120 drove in front of the police vehicle, resulting in a collision.  The lone occupant of the truck was not injured.

Pincher Creek's St. Michael's SV Boys Dragons emerged the 1A champions at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association South Zone tournament held November 12-14 at Lethbridge College.  In second place was Bow Island's Senator Gershaw Gators. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned third place. Congratulations to all three teams!
