Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek's Junior Dust Devils Baseball team hosred a double header with the Vulcan Hawks on Saturday, June 10 at Sproule Field The Dust Devils did not fare as well as they hoped, being washed out in the first game, but rallied in the second game to improve significantly.

Baseball season approaches

Josh Davis - On Monday May 16 the Halton Hawks prep baseball team hosted the Highwood Mustangs at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek. The Hawks gained a four run lead in the second inning, and while the game remained tight they ultimately persevered, winning 7-4.

The Matthew Halton Hawks prep baseball team took to Sproule field on Monday May 2, hosting the Kainai Warriors. The Warriors are one of the weaker teams in the league, with only nine players and no wins yet this season. The Hawks took the lead in the first inning with five runs, ultimately winning a decisive 17-1 victory. This brings their record up to 4-2, in a three way tie for third in the league.

On Thursday April 28 the Halton Hawks baseball team hosted the FP Walshe Flyers at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek. The Hawks were returning to home field after a 22-19 away win on Tuesday game against the Willow Creek Cobras. The Hawks didn’t have their heads in the game, and were defeated by the Flyers 11-7.

Matthew Halton High School's Hawks baseball team played their first game of the 2016 season with a game against the Crowsnest Panthers at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek on the evening of April 12.  The field was in rough shape but the weather was relatively balmy, except for a stiff wind. The Hawks won the game in 5 innings, 12-2.  According to the league's rules, a team wins after 5 innings if they've established a 10 point or greater lead.

Minors Dust Devils tie Mavericks 12-12

Pincher Creek's Minors Dust Devils hosted Fort Macleod's Mavericks at Lions Park on the evening of Monday July 1, with the two teams ultimately playing to a 12-12 tie.  The field was quite damp but thankfully free of the rain that fell on many of the just-passed weekend's outdoor sporting events in the area. It was a well earned tie with good pitching, fielding, batting, and particularly base loading and stealing throughout.

Pincher Creek's Halton Hawks played their last regular season game yesterday evening, May 26 at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek against Vulcan's County Central Hawks. The game was a make-up game for one that was postponed due to rain, and yesterday's game came perilously close to suffering the same fate. The game was supposed to run seven innings, but it ran long and it was decided to cap it at five inning, ending just after 8:00 pm. It turned out to be a high scoring five innings, with Pincher ultimately it 11-8 after strong first and fifth innings.

American Legion Baseball (ALB) came to Pincher Creek last weekend with the Fort Macleod Royals hosting a Skills and Drills Baseball Camp on Saturday afternoon May 23 (click here for that story) and then hosting an exhibition double header at Pincher Creek's Sproule Field against Cranbrook's Bandits on Sunday afternoon and evening May 24.  The Royals maintained their reputation as the Lethbridge League ALB team to beat by winning both games by 1 point.

Juan Teran Park in Pincher Creek was full of developing baseball talent on a sunny Saturday May 23 afternoon as the Fort Macleod Royals hosted their annual Skills and Drills Baseball Camp in partnership with Pincher Creek Minor Baseball.  Royals Head Coach Brad Kropinak had lots of help from his team as they passed on their knowledge to Chinook West athletes ranging in age from 9 to 12.  Participants came from Vauxhall, Fernie, Elkwood, Sparwood, Cardston County, Pincher Creek, and Fort Macleod.  "That's awesome," enthused area super-organizer Carrah Pinder-Walter as she surveyed a ballpark filled with energized kids.  The turnout was much larger than expected, in the ballpark of 43 kids, forcing a change of venue from Lion's Park to Juan Teran Park.

The bats were busy at Fort Macleod on Thursday, and when the dust cleared the FP Walshe Flyers had a 21-11 win over the Matthew Halton Hawks in five innings.

It was a perfect-weather day for baseball yesterday evening when Pincher Creek's Minors Dust Devils hosted Crowsnest Pass at Lions Ball Park.  Crowsnest Pass earned an 11-5 win in a game that saw many young athletes from both teams stretch and demonstrate their newfound skills on the diamond.

Pincher Creek's Hawks High School baseball team rebounded from a 1-8 deficit to ultimately defeat Willow Creek's Cobras 11-9 at Sproule Field on Tuesday evening, May 19.  The winning run came for the Hawks when Matthew Duncan stole home, and successfully stolen bases in the latter half of the game played a big part in the Hawks' victory.

Pincher Creek's beer league cracks open a new season with tourney

The Pincher Creek Slo-Pitch League kicked off their 2015 softball season with their first ever season-opening tournament last weekend.  The event was supposed to start on Friday May 8th but the games were delayed until early the next day because there was an unexpected snowfall. There were a total of 9 teams signed up to participate in the friendly tournament out of the 13 that are scheduled for the regular season.

Pincher Creek's Minor Dust Devils hosted Elkford for a double header on Saturday May 9 at Lions Park.  The weather co-operated fully, with the sun shining and the winds stilled.  A hot dog BBQ separated the two games.  The competition was very close, but in the end Elkford prevailed in both games.  Both teams showed a marked growth as the innings progressed, with players learning more about the ins and outs of their positions with each play.  Elkford proved to be proficient at stealing bases, which helped them to their wins.

Pincher Creek's Hawks hosted Magrath's Zeniths at Sproule Field on the evening of May 7.  The Zeniths earned a 13-1 victory, scoring 8 unanswered runs in the second inning.

The Hawks lost twice this week, each time by 1 point, and earned a 1 point win over Picture Butte's Kings last week.  A very competitive season so far.

Little Leaguers hit the fields this week, in large numbers.  Pincher Creek Minor Baseball GM Carrah Walter: "In Little League it has been a GREAT start. Parents have slowly been stepping up to help coach. Practices have been going well. The weather has been holding up for us. We are just waiting to finalize teams so we can get a schedule made for the Minors and Majors. We are not taking any more registrations as teams are full. Which is always nice to see. The Crowsnest Pass is looking to merge with Pincher Creek to gain a few more Junior players."

Pincher Creek's Hawks High School baseball team played their first full game of the season on the evening of April 16 at home at Sproule Field. They hosted the Picture Butte Kings, and the Hawks managed to pull out a 15-14 come from behind win after 7 breezy innings. The Hawks travelled to Kainai for what was supposed to be their first game of the season two days before, on April 14, but were disappointed when Kainai had to forfeit due to a lack of players.

Pincher Creek's Junior Dust Devils hosted Fernie for a playoff game at Sproule Field on a soggy Saturday June 14. Devils Coach Bryan Mackenzie was concerned about their chances before the game. "I'm out of pitchers, I burnt them out last night," said Mackenzie, who jokingly told me that I could warm up. "We lost a tough one last night in Cardston by one run, and they (Fernie) play Cardston this afternoon here." Mackenzie may have been a little early in that assessment, as the Devils won the game by a wide margin. Unfortunately, not wide enough for the Devils to continue on to the next level of playoffs once all the stats were calculated.
