Sabres defeat Dragons to earn Bronze at 1A Boys Basketball Provincials

On March 18 Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres faced Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons in the Bronze game at the 1A Boys ASAA Provincial Basketball Tournament.  The tournament was hosted by Calgary's Rundle Academy.  The Sabres defeated the Dragons 75-51.  The Dragons had strong first and final quarters.  The Sabres were consistently strong throughout.

C. Davis - Kainai's Tatsikiisaapo'p Middle School B Girls Eagles won the South Western Junior High Athletic Association (SWJHAA) 2017 banner after defeating Matthew Halton's Hawks 55-41 in the SWJHAA Post Season Final on March 11. The tournament was held at Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek. The Hawks placed second, and St. Michael's Dragons placed third. Six teams competed in a total of seven games.

2017 Basketball Zones wins for local teams, Dragons and Sabres boys going to provincials

Livingstone's 1 A Boys Sabres earned first place at Zones at Lethbridge College on Saturday evening after defeating Senator Gershaw by a wide margin.  Top Sabres scorers in the final were Jonathan Erickson with 20 points, Quinlan Connelly-Engel with 15 points, and Brady Douglas with 14 points.  St. Michael's Jr. A Girls Dragons basketball team earned first place at Zones.  The Jr. B Boys Dragons earned second place.  The Jr. B Girls Dragons earned third place at Post Season*.  The 1A Boys Dragons earned third place after defeating Coaldale by a wide margin on Saturday evening.  Top scorers for the 1A Dragons were Mitchel Zoratti with 22 points, Calvin Cooley with 18 points, and Michael Svab and Tyler Gerber with 10 points each.

Going to Provincials:  Livingstone Sabres, St. Michael's Dragons, and Senator Gershaw will be representing the South Zone at the 2017 Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) 1A Boys Basketball Provincials, to be held March 16-18 at Rundle Academy in Calgary.

Chris Davis - The 2017 Chinook Basketball League 2017 Post Season Tournament was held March 2-4, co-hosted by Pincher Creek's St. Michael's and Matthew Halton High Schools.  Teams from 10 Chinook League member schools participated.  Kainai's Lady Warriors earned Gold in the Girls division.  St. Michael's Dragons earned Gold in the Boys division.  Second place Girls was earned by Matthew Halton's Hawks. Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres Boys earned Silver.  Third place Girls went to St. Michael's Dragons and third place Boys went to Kainai's Warriors.  The league's year end banquet and awards were held on Friday evening, and is the subject of a separate story (click here).

Toni Lucas - The 2017 Chinook League Basketball Post Season Awards banquet was held on Friday evening March 3, at Matthew Halton School midway through the Chinook post season basketball tournament (that story soon).  Dinner was prepared from the Hawks Nest school cafeteria kitchen and served by volunteers.  After dinner Hawks coach/Chinook League organizer Randy Whitehead acted as Master of Ceremonies and handed out the awards.

Boys Gold: St. Michael's Dragons

Girls Gold: Kainai Lady Warriors

The 2017 Hawks Classic annual basketball tournament was hosted by Pincher Creek's Matthew Halton High School. A total of 16 Boys and Girls SV teams played a total 24 games at the Matthew Halton and St. Michael's gymnasiums over the course of two days, February 24 and 25.  The final games were barnburners.  Pincher Creek's Dragons Boys upset the Livingstone  Sabres 52-47 to earn Gold.  Silver for the Sabres.  Kainai's Lady Warriors defeated Hanna's Hawks 53-45 to earn Gold.  Silver for Hanna.  Halton's Hawks Girls defeated St. Michael's Dragons 62-59 for Girls Bronze.  Nanton's J.T. Foster Knights defeated the Halton Hawks 89-69 for Boys Bronze.

The 2017 Chinook Basketball League Post Season Tournament and Awards Banquet was held last weekend, with games at St. Michael's and Matthew Halton School. St. Michael's Dragons Boys and Kainai's Lady Warrior earned Gold. Livingstone's Sabres Boys and the Halton Hawks Girls* earned Silver. Brady Douglas of the Livingstone Sabres made this full-court basket just after the buzzer at the end of the first quarter of the championship Boys game of the Chinook Basketball League's 2017 Post Season Tournament (March 4). The basket didn't count, but was an impressive feat nonetheless. Mitchell Zoratti of Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons (who ultimately won the banner) is seen at the beginning of the video sinking a free throw.

After that comes Zones and Provincials. Livingstone's Sabres are currently atop the Chinook League standings with 8 wins and no losses.  St. Michael's Dragons are in second place with 9 wins and 1 loss.  Kainai is in third place with 6 wins and 3 losses.

Magrath Zeniths earn Gold at Sabres-hosted Jr A Boys Basketball Tournament

Chris Davis - Lundbreck's Livingstone School hosted the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association South Zone Junior A Boys (grades 8 and 9) Basketball Tournament on February 17/18. Eight teams participated, including Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres, Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Magrath's Zeniths, Claresholm's Willow Creek Cobras, Cardston Country's Mountain View Grizzlies, Christ the King Academy from Brooks, Crowsnest Pass' Panthers, and Medicine Hat's Alexandra M.S. Jayhawks. A total of 12 games were played.

École de la Rose Sauvage students put on half time show at MHHS Sr Basketball Tournament

Students from Calgary's École de la Rose Sauvage put on a half-time show during the Boys Sabres vs Couguars game on Friday evening at the 2017 Halton High School Senior High Boys and Girls Basketball tournament. The tournament is one of the highlights of the basketball season and is ongoing all day Saturday at Matthew Halton and St. Michael's schools.

Chris Davis - Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) hosted the Halton Hawks 2017 Alberta Schools Athletic Association nine game B Boys Basketball Tournament on January 27/28. Six teams participated, including the Pincher Creek's MHHS Hawks, Pincher Creek's St. Michael's Dragons (STM), Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres (LHS), Fort Macleod's F.P. Walshe Flyers (FPW), Taber's D.A. Ferguson Dust Devils (DAF), and Claresholm's WCCHS Cobras.

Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres earned first place, undefeated in all their games. The Dust Devils earned second place, St. Michael's Dragons earned third place, and the Cobras won the consolation final.

Chinook boys basketball - Sabres win tournament, defeat Kainai

Chris Davis - Lundbreck's Livingstone Sabres JV Boys Basketball team travelled to High River for a AA tournament on the weekend , where they defeated host team Notre Dame in the final to earn first place.  On Monday evening the Senior Sabres squad hosted Kainai at the Livingstone School gym, winning 65-55 after four very competitive quarters.

Chris Davis - Last Friday and Saturday the Matthew Halton Gym was the busy site of the 2017 Halton Hawks Junior Girls A and B invitational basketball tournament.  12 teams played in a total of four pools for preliminary games before contesting in A and B final games.

Chris Davis -  St. Michael's Sr. Boys and Girls Dragons basketball teams hosted their Crowsnest Pass counterparts at the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium on January 11, and won both games by wide margins.
