Collision involving motorbike and van on Hwy 3 near Summerview

A multi-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and a van occurred at approximately 3:30 pm on Sunday, June 29 on Highway 3 near the Summerview Feedlot turn off.

The two vehicles were traveling on Highway 3 when the collision occurred. Pincher Creek Rescue, Ambulance, and Engine 43 responded. The rider of the motorcycle was transported directly to hospital in Lethbridge. Two people  had minor injuries and were released on-scene.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) held their annual awards banquet at the Pincher Creek Legion on Friday evening, June 27.  PCES includes first responders from Pincher Creek, Lundbreck, and Beaver Mines. A telling sign of the dedication required was that during the ceremonies there were two calls, and members excused themselves and left to respond.   "We are very much a community based operation," said  PCES David Cox who thanked all the members for their dedication and service.  Cox thanked all the service members families, recognizing that without family support the job becomes more difficult.

"It was a busy night," said Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) Chief Dave Cox.  PCES was called to two incidents.

Pincher Fire and  Beaver Mines Fire responded to a fire call at approximately 12:00 am today, June 29. It turned out to be a permitted fire in the Beaver Mines area.

At approximately 5:00 am today Pincher Fire and Lundbreck Fire responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle collision on Highway 3 about 2 km west of Lundbreck near the east turnoff to Lundbreck Falls.  A driver hit a moose.  The driver was taken to Pincher Creek Hospital with undetermined injuries.

Congratulations to Sensei Liam Hale, possibly the youngest at eleven years old to receive a well-deserved Black Belt in Shorei-Kan Go-Ju Ryu Karate. He joins the ranks of his family, Senseis Louise, Chas and Reed who received theirs last year. It was a long test conducted by Sensei Peter Dressler on Saturday June 21. The test included a complete review of everything he had learned since he began at just six years old.

Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek held their end of the year Blue and White Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 26. Staff, students, friends and family members attended. Alexandra Morgan started off the program by leading the singing of O Canada. Principal Sandy McDuffe acted as Emcee for the event. "I truly enjoy the awards ceremonies," said McDuffe after the event. "It is a time when we recognize and reward excellence."

Majors baseball coach Hays Bruder was out on the Lions Park field getting U12 kids ready for the upcoming Southern Alberta Summer Games (SASG).  Pincher Creek's SASG Majors team will have many of the same athletes as the Major Dust Devils, with a few differences.  The Major Dust Devils finished their  season with a Silver at the Elkford tournament on June 22 (second out of six teams).

After 26 Cowboy Poetry Gatherings in Pincher Creek, organizers took a brave step this year and changed the format and the name to inaugurate what they hope will be an event with equally long legs.  Such a change doesn't come without its share of pain and dissent, but the Best of the West Weekend was, in final measure, successful at keeping some of the best attributes of the Gathering while adding new and younger ingredients to the mix.

Request to park fifth wheel at Pincher Creek Golf Course denied

During the regular meeting of Pincher Creek Town Council held on Monday, June 23 council reviewed a request by Golf Course restaurant Manager Joni MacArthur, who came to council on Monday, June 9 to ask for an allowance for her to either park her fifth wheel at the golf course, or to have reduced camping fees and waive the need for her to move every 14 days at the local Pincher Creek Memorial Campground.

Mid-afternoon today, June 28, 2014 Pincher Creek Emergency Services and multiple other resources were dispatched to the scene of a back-country quad roll-over southwest of the Shell plant, near Blue Lake according to an eyewitness, south of Pincher Creek.

According to PCES Chief Dave Cox crews went in to give medical assistance, the patient was carried out and then transported using the Beaver Mines Fire side-by-side vehicle to a Waterton Parks helicopter.  That helicopter and an attendant transported the patient to Pincher Creek Hospital, and a STARS helicopter transported the patient from there to Calgary at approximately 5:30 pm.

Further information as to the condition and name of the victim is not available at this time.

Crow Signs and Embroidery in the Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek donated hundreds of volunteer t-shirts to the Town for the Southern Alberta Summer Games (SASG), the idea being that volunteers would be easy to see and be identified, and have a great memento of the games. Of the hundreds of shirts they made one came out with a big mistake, it was printed upside down. The owner of Crow Signs, Doug Paton, admits that he was the one that made the mistake, and everyone else in the shop teased him about it. Rather than toss it out and just replace it, Paton decided that he had a lemon and it was time to make lemonade, and have some fun in the process.

A nine-month-old Calgary boy abducted by his father on Friday evening has been found safe and in good health.

The child was located in Riverbend at approximately 4:30 a.m., today, Saturday, June 28, 2014, after associates of the suspect called police. The child was taken from a northeast parking lot in the 2400 block of 37 Avenue N.E., around 8 pm.

The suspect in this case is also in police custody. Charges against him are pending.

Further details will be released as they become available.

The Calgary Police Service would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance.

Pincher Creek fugitive apprehended and sentenced for 2012 impaired driving incident

During the early hours of the morning on November 18th, 2012, a vehicle roll-over occurred in a residential area of Pincher Creek. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a parked vehicle and rolled onto a second parked vehicle. Both occupants were injured and transported to hospital.

The driver, Cameron Keller, 34, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a sample of his breath, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and driving while disqualified.

Shortly after being released pending his court hearing, Keller fled the country to Southeast Asia. On May 28th, 2014, after more than a year and a half abroad, Keller returned to Canada via Vancouver airport where he was apprehended by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). He was transported to an Alberta remand center where he was set to face trial.

Keller pled guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was sentenced to a period of incarceration, a driving prohibition, and is required to use a vehicle interlock device once the prohibition expires.

The third annual Piikani Youth Council Aboriginal Day Powwow was held June 20/21 at Crowlodge Park.  The event coincided with the summer solstice (June 21 at 4:51 am*), a traditional time of celebration for human beings stretching back to before our recorded histories.  There were Grand Entries both days, and numerous dancing and drumming competitions with over over $15,000 in cash prizes up for grabs.  A ban on alcohol and drugs was strictly enforced, resulting in a safe and familial atmosphere inside the spectacular Crowlodge Park facility.

Beaver Mines residents warned about possible drinking water contamination

Environmental Public Health has concerns about the drinking water quality in the Beaver Mines area. Our office has been investigating recent failed private sewage systems in Beaver Mines and is concerned that this could negatively impact both the groundwater and surface water quality of the community and surrounding areas. While the failed system has been contained and remediation measures are in place to prevent sewage from being disposed of on the surface, there may still be a risk that water sources have been contaminated.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding Albertans to take precautions necessary to protect themselves against West Nile virus infection this summer.

“With exposure to mosquitoes comes risk of West Nile virus,” says Dr. Vivien Suttorp, Medical Officer of Health, South Zone. “Because some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, it’s important to avoid being bitten at all.”

Lethbridge East Constituency ML) Bridget Pastoor visited Pincher Creek and area on Thursday, June 26.  Pastoor said she was charged with the happy task of giving out cheques from the Alberta Lottery Foundation. "As an MLA it's a treasure to be able to give out these cheques, because I know that this money will be stretched to $1.50 for every dollar that we've added. This is probably the best use of taxpayers money that I can possibly hand out." She presented cheques to Livingstone School, Pincher Creek Golf Course, Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions, and Piikani Nation.

Proper use of child safety seats reduces the likelihood of your child being injured or killed in a vehicle collision by up to 75 per cent. In Alberta, the law requires that drivers ensure all passengers under the age of 16 are buckled and secured correctly in the vehicle.

Pincher Creek Southern Alberta Summer Games Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue was held outside between the arena and and the pool on Tuesday, June 24.  "Your support allows us to show southern Alberta what a fabulous community we have in Pincher Creek," announced Games Chair Brian Wright. "To all the volunteers this evening, as of this morning, we have 250 volunteers registered, with a few more registering tonight." According to Wright the games will include 2200 athletes, including over 400 from the Pincher Creek area.

Al Koura brand Tahina Extra recalled due to Salmonella

The food recall warning issued on June 18, 2014 has been updated to include an additional product. The additional product was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Sesameco is recalling Al Koura brand Tahina Extra from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. The product has been distributed in Manitoba and Alberta. Consumers should not consume the recalled product described below.

Holiday pay rules for Canada Day

In 2014, Canada Day is on Tuesday, July 1. Under Alberta’s Employment Standards legislation, the following rules apply:

• If you normally work Tuesdays and are given Canada Day off, then you are entitled to your regular daily wage.
• If you normally work Tuesdays and work Canada Day, then you are entitled to your regular daily wage plus time-and-a-half for each hour of work. Alternatively, you are entitled to your regular wage for each hour of work on the holiday, plus another regular work day off with pay.
• If you normally have Tuesdays off but you work on Canada Day, then you are entitled to pay at a rate of time-and-a-half of your regular wage for each hour of work.
• If you normally have Tuesdays off and do not work on Canada Day, then you are not entitled to general holiday pay and are not entitled to an extra day off. However, you may receive general holiday pay or an extra day off if it is a part of your employment contract or a part of a union agreement. Please check with your employer.

To be eligible for general holiday pay, employees:

• must have worked 30 days for their employer in the preceding 12 months,
• must work their scheduled shift before and after the holiday (unless employer consent is given), and
• must work on the general holiday if requested.

All Alberta government offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.

Heritage grants boost preservation projects provincewide

Albertans are protecting local historic landmarks and sharing the story of province’s past with help from the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.

Alberta Culture, through the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, is providing 82 grants totaling $1.48 million to support community heritage preservation and conservation projects across Alberta. Grants are awarded twice annually to individuals as well as municipalities, nonprofit organizations and businesses to support heritage preservation projects ranging from conservation of designated historic buildings to research projects, publications and heritage inventories.

Sobeys parent company Empire Company Limited released its Fiscal 2014 Fourth Quarter and Full Year results today, June 16. That document includes a section titled "Sobeys' Retail Store Network Rationalization", which states in part as follows: "During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, So beys completed a detailed review of its retail store network."

"Based on this detailed review, Sobeys has determined that consistently underperforming retail stores representing approximately 50 stores (1.5 million of total gross square footage) and 3.8 percent of the total retail network gross square footage, will close.  Approximately sixty percent of the affected stores are located in Western Canada.

And, of course, one of those "underperforming stores" is the one here in Pincher Creek.  Employees there report they were told that the Pincher Creek store would be closed July 31.  Some employees have already been let go.

Sobeys representatives have so far been unavailable to us for comment.

There were blue skies and great weather for the 46 contestants who entered the annual Fish Derby at Bobby Burns Park in Pincher Creek on Wednesday, June 26.  Over 100 people came out to enjoy the day. The derby has been going strong since at least 1990 and offers a pleasant day of competition for seniors and people with handicaps.

PCES responds to single vehicle motorcycle collision on Highway 22

Pincher Creek Emergency Services responded to a single vehicle motorcycle collision on Highway 22 approximately 15 km north of Highway 3 earlier today, June 26, at approximately 10:30 am.

The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was transported to Pincher Creek Hospital. Pincher Creek Emergency Services responded with an ambulance and rescue vehicle and Lundbreck Fire also responded.

Hewetson Avenue was closed for a period of time today from just south of the entrance to Vista Village to the bottom of the Hewetson Avenue hill as crews dealt with the aftermath after a dump truck apparently travelled west with its bucket up from a worksite on Dundas Street near James Avenue, then along Frederick Street, and then northbound on Hewetson Avenue before tangling with lines at the base of the hill that leads north to the Ranchland Mall and then Highway 6.  The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 pm.  Hewetson Avenue has since been reopened.

Matthew Halton High School recently held their Junior and Senior High Athletic Awards in the school gymnasium. Athletic Director Randy Whitehead acted as Emcee for the awards. In each instance everyone in attendance from each team was asked to come to the front and then the awards were given out. This reminded the audience and the players that although individuals stand out it is because the team stands with them.

Southern Alberta was affected by a wet weather event which, in the Pincher Creek area, effectively began with thunderstorms on June 15,  a power outage early in the morning June 16,  rainfall warnings and high streamflow advisories on June 16 as well,  and effectively ended on June 19, 2014. Several southern Alberta communities were hit hard by the storm, including Crowsnest Pass, Claresholm, Cardston, MD of Taber, Town of Magrath, Claresholm, Fort Macleod, Coaldale, Medicine Hat and the Blood Tribe Reserve. Pincher Creek and area, while affected, was not as seriously affected as originally feared.  For Town dwellers it was almost a non-event.  Rural residents of the MD of Pincher Creek were not all quite that fortunate.

The MD of Pincher Creek No. 9 council room viewers gallery was full when Canyon School grade 2 students visited just before the beginning of council's regular meeting this afternoon, Tuesday June 24.  Councillor Fred Schoening had the opportunity to briefly visit with his granddaughter Madeline Schoening, who is a member of the grade 2 class. Crestview Lodge a step closer to a new building

According to Thornton the complete funding application with building plans for the Crestview Lodge building project have been submitted to the province of Alberta for funding consideration.

The Pincher Creek annual Cricket Match happened Sunday, afternoon June 22 at Lions Park. People came to play, cheer, or get to know more about the game. Moira Robbins is one of the main organizers of the event and was thrilled that there were so many new faces on the pitch. There were players new to the game, lifelong enthusiasts, and some that had traveled all the way from Calgary just to take part. The rules were relaxed and everything was casual and friendly.

An Alberta Agriculture specialist says that this time of year can bring weather-related new crop pricing opportunities.

“June is here, most of the seeding of North American spring crops has been completed, and farmers are now into weed control and crop monitoring activities,” says Neil Blue,market specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Vermilion. “Typically, during the growing season, there is some premium to new crop prices in case of a widespread production-reducing factor. In our world crop market, such a production scare or reality could develop in any major production area of the Northern hemisphere. There was a crowd outside of the Pincher Creek Fire Hall on Monday, June 23. They had been called because they were winners in the Wear the Gear program.  Winners won bicycles, helmets, and other goodies for being 'safe cyclists' or artists in Pincher Creek. The program ran from May 19 until June 18, during which time Pincher Creek Emergency Services, Bylaw Services and RCMP members gave out tickets to kids that were wearing safety gear while riding any self propelled equipment with wheels, most notably bicycles. Winners of the random draws included Cheyenne Klein Hans-Kaupp and Eddie Mitchell for their helmet coloring contest designs, while Tegan Prout and Hailey McLeod won bicycles after being ticketed for safe cycling.
