The driver, Cameron Keller, 34, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a sample of his breath, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and driving while disqualified.
Shortly after being released pending his court hearing, Keller fled the country to Southeast Asia. On May 28th, 2014, after more than a year and a half abroad, Keller returned to Canada via Vancouver airport where he was apprehended by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). He was transported to an Alberta remand center where he was set to face trial.
Keller pled guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was sentenced to a period of incarceration, a driving prohibition, and is required to use a vehicle interlock device once the prohibition expires.
