Pincher Creek's swimming pool was humming with organized chaos June 7 - 8 during the Dolphins 2013 Pincher Creek Invitational Swim Meet. Close to 200 participants from 7 swim clubs came to challenge each other in a totoal of 749 swims, bringing their families along. The competitors camped out in the arena, kids were playing in the hallways, and outside there were swimmers and siblings playing games.

Participating teams included Claresholm Kraken (16 members), Crowsnest Pass Piranhas (22), Fort Macleod Swim Club (6), Lethbridge Orcas (49), Nanton Marlins (29), Taber Vipers (20), and host team Pincher Creek Dolphins (55 members). As you can see, the Dolphins enjoy a great level of participation.

Almost none of the athletes in attendance missed their start times, making it to the marshalling areas before their meet. Despite the continuing rush of events smiles were in evidence everywhere one looked. The families involved all see each other regularly during the season at different meets, so even though it is a highly competative sport it seems to be a very nurturing environment for the kids. Competitors congratulated each other on their achievements, and for a number of kids that I talked to the event was more about beating your personal best time than about winning against the person in the next lane.

"It's always great to beat your best time," said Dolphins member Megan Sundberg, who had just won the puck drop prize. "It means I'm getting better."

Laura Parisis
Pincher Creek Dolphins, Crowsnest Pass Piranhas, Taber Vipers, Nanton Marlins, Lethbridge Orcas, Claresholm Kraken, and Fort Macleod Clubs were all in attendance. Brooks hosted the previous meet (click here for that story), but unfortunately they could not make this meet due to some major community events in their town.

"I think we had a very successful day. We had 196 swimmers, a larger than average size for a meet for Pincher," said Pincher Creek Meet Manager Mike Alexander, who mentioned that it would have even been larger if Brooks had been in attendance.

Daniel Alexander
"There was a lot of good competition between the clubs, and within the clubs. People enjoyed themselves. There was a lot of good sportsmanship, a lot of laughs, and a lot of fun." Alexander acknowledged how busy the weekend was. "You can't have a swim meet without the amazing support of the organizers, and that goes right from the parents that bring the kids, parent volunteers that do marshalling, officiating, timing, putting together the results, and now everybody is busy with cleaning up. It's a huge task. It couldn't be done without the great support of the team, but unique to swimming is the great support from the other teams, and community members especially with officiating."

Brynn Grose
The Dolphins had a great meet. Calvin Cooley set a new club record in the 50 Breast with a time of 37.33. Adam Grose set a new club record with a time of 1:03.18 in the 100 Free. Maeran Hinch set a new club record in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:39.40. Jarret Plante set a new club record AND his first time in the 400 Free with a time of  5:38.83.  Plante and Christopher Alexander were tied with 5 other participants for top points at the event, with 36 points each.

The Dolphins tallied a total of 111 personal best times at the event. Wow!

When the final official results were announced, Pincher Creek was First Place for the event based on total Age Group Points.
