Pincher Creek's A Atom Chinooks hosted Kainai's B Atom Braves for a preliminary Provincials game on Tuesday evening, January 27. The younger Braves battles valiantly, but the Chinooks won the game by a significant enough margin as to eliminate the need for a second game between the two teams.

 The Chinooks move on to an as-yet unknown Provincials challenger, and the Atom Chinooks Tournament is scheduled for February 6-8 at the Memorial Community Centre Arena, Main Street Pincher Creek.

Citizen asks for 30km/hr speed limit in town

Gloria LeBlanc, self-described as a relatively new resident to Pincher Creek, appeared before Town Council as a delegation during their regular meeting on Monday evening, January 26.  LeBlanc said she would like the speed reduced along a longer area of Macleod Street, and the whole of the Town of Pincher Creek public roadways reduced to 30 km/hour. LeBlanc said that she lives in Cleland Trailer Park, northeast of the Pincher Creek Aquatic Centre on Macleod Street.  The area is posted as a playground zone with a speed limit of 30 km and has soccer fields, and the recreation center and library at the junction of Main Street.  The speed limit was reduced for a section of this roadway last year after an appeal very similar to LeBlanc's by Vanessa Haggan on March 24, 2014.

Traffic exiting from Waterton Avenue onto Macleod Street was cited as a big concern by LeBlanc. Travelling westbound, the legal and posted speed of 50 km/hr quickly drops to 30 km/hr as one approaches the sharp south turn adjacent to Cleland's Trailer park, other dwellings, and the pool field.

Pincher Creek Curling Club hosted their 2015 Combo Bonspiel January 23-25. The event is a long-standing bonspiel "more than 15 years old". A good turnout of 20 teams took to the ice. Curling is a sport of good sports, and this year for fun the club ran a Pajama Party theme on Saturday, the day of the event supper. The lounge upstairs included a photo-prop bed set up for those that wanted to show their fun side and create a memento of their weekend. A few of the teams and individuals got into the fun, with some ladies in housecoats, pj's, onesies, and of course curlers, with every double entendre fully intended. There were fun PJ party games, pillow fights, and contests. Most if not all of the men declined to wear their nightwear out on the ice. One wag said, 'With what I wear to sleep, it would be too cold to curl." Along with the fun was the serious side of the sporting event.  The bonspiel was divided into Mens and Ladies teams with A, B and C divisions.  The top two teams from A B and C won cash prizes.

The 36th Annual Pincher Creek Old-timers Annual Tournament was held last weekend at the MCC Arena.

Gold medals went to teams in three divisions, based upon aggregate points.

During the regular meeting of Town Council on Monday January 26 it was announced that Dick Burnham was accepted to continue being a member of the  Municipal Development & Subdivision Authority (MDSA) Committee. Councillor Tammy Rubbelke said, "Mr. Burnham is very dedicated to participating." Councillor Lorne Jackson commented on Burnham's experience and knowledge. Burnham is a veteran and a Rotarian, among other things.  Council was unanimous in its acceptance of Burnham for another 3 year term that will expire in April 2017.

A small Lethbridge-based group has joined a nascent and growing First Nations movement #ShutDownCanada under their own hashtagged name, #ShutDownCanadaLethbridge (SDCL). On social media including a Facebook page (SDCL) reissues #ShutDownCanada call for First Nation communities across Canada to blockade railways, ports, highways, on February 13. "Don't buy, don't fly, no work and keep the kids home from school."

Four arrested in ALERT Lethbridge bust

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) arrested four people in relation to a drug trafficking investigation, with drugs and guns being seized from a South Lethbridge home.

On January 23 ALERT Lethbridge, an integrated team consisting of Lethbridge Regional Police Services and RCMP members, executed a search warrant at a home in the 700-block of 13 Street South.

The AA PeeWee Rockies faced the Taber Golden Suns at the MCC Arena in Pincher Creek on the evening of Saturday, January 24. The Suns outplayed the Rockies, winning by a wide margin with goalie Blake Vaselenak keeping every puck shot his way out of the Golden Sun net. The Rockies had Colby Sanspariel and Aiden Douglas in goal at different points in the game. The Rockies showed good heart throughout the game, but were no match for the Suns.

Matthew Halton School's B Girls Hawks basketball team hosted Livingstone's Sabres on Tuesday evening, January 27. The Sabres won by a wide margin.  Aubrey Old Crow was high scorer for the Hawks and Hailey Grove was high scorer for Livingstone, closely followed by teammate Nicole Keeler.

SPCA/Humane Society can stay at old RCMP building through February

Pincher Creek Humane Society (PCHS) will have a home for their charges through February, 2015.  During the regular meeting of Town Council on Monday January 26 Pincher Creek Town Council discussed the organization's request to be allowed to continue using the space the organization currently occupies in the former RCMP building on Main Street through to the end of February.  A new facility for PCHS is under construction and the organization has been using the building as an office and sheltering area for cats since July, 2014.  They currently have an agreement with the Town of Pincher Creek that has been extended until the end of January, 2015.

Council agreed to grant the extension until the end of February, 2015.

Thursday, February 26, 2015, sees an agriculture job fair in Lethbridge. “Right now, we’re still looking for some more agricultural companies to participate in the fair,” said Al Dooley, agriculture labour recruitment specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Edmonton. “We had 18 companies at last year’s fair in Lethbridge and we’re hoping for even more this time.”

An Alberta Agriculture crop specialist says there are opportunities for growing hemp in the province, particularly organic hemp.  “Many people may now be aware that the majority of the hemp grown in Alberta is for seed purposes,” said Harry Brook, crop specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “The market is strong for hemp seed but the fibre market is stalled due to a lack of a processing plant. However, there is one planned for southern Alberta.”  Brook said there is a lot of interest in growing hemp, especially with conventional crop prices being on the decline this year.

Record warm weather for southern Alberta

Collision between vehicle and pedestrian on Main Street sends one man to hospital

Pincher Creek RCMP and Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) responded to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian at approximately 7:15 am this morning, Monday, January 26.  The car was turning from Main Street to travel north on Poplar Avenue, according to RCMP Constable Sherri Flundra.  An adult male pedestrian was transported to Pincher Creek Hospital with undetermined injuries.  Cst. Flundra said an investigation is ongoing at this time regarding the incident.

At their annual dinner, held at Pincher Creek's Community Hall, participants in the annual Old-timer's Hockey Tournament paused to honour the sacrifices of the RCMP.  A minute of silence was observed for RCMP Constable David Matthew Wynn of the St. Albert Detachment, who died in the line of duty last week.

Presiding at the ceremony were retired RCMP Sergeant Roxanne Baalim (formerly the commanding officer at Pincher Creek and Brocket detachments) and her husband Galt Baalim.

"We have quite a number of players on teams that are involved in law enforcement," said Galt Baalim.  "Everyone knows a member was lost in St. Albert this week, so we decided we would have a moment of silence for that member."

"If we could just have one moment of silence so we can think about these people that protect us and do good by us."

Pincher Creek's Novice B Chinooks kept their excellent record intact after an 8-6 win on the road against Taber 2 on Sunday, January 26. The Chinooks were off to a quick start, but Taber made them work for it, coming back hard to end the first period 4-3 Chinooks. A strong second period for the Chinooks had them up 8-4 at the end of the second. Two quick ones from Taber and well matched play made for a tight third period, but the Chinooks held on to win it 8-6. 7 wins and a tie for the Chinooks so far this season. They are currently tied with Raymond 1 for first place in the Spud League standings. Raymond 1 is also 7-0-1 for the season so far. The Chinooks and Raymond 1 played to a 6-6 tie on January 10.

A Boys Basketball - Sabres win barnburner against Dragons

St. Michael's A Boys Dragons hosted their Livingstone Sabres counterparts for an exciting game of basketball at the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday evening, January 22.  These two teams are very evenly matched,  and the frequency of tied scores in the first three quarters attested to that.  The game was tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons pulled ahead slightly in the last minute of the second quarter to be ahead 10-15 at the half.  The two teams were tied or within a point or two of each other for much of the third, but Livingstone began to surge as the Dragons began to flag, particularly in the last two minutes of the quarter, and the Sabres were ahead 28-23 going into the final quarter.  The Sabres also had a 3 point edge in that final quarter to win the game 40-33.

St. Michael's B Boys Dragons basketball team hosted their Livingstone Sabres counterparts at the Dale Wentz Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday evening, January 22.  Despite a feisty effort by the Sabres, the Dragons won the game by a wide margin.  Top scorer in the game was Mathias Gelber (Dragons) with 21 points, followed by Lance Palao (Dragons) with 17 points.  Logan Olsen (Sabres) made a sweet three-pointer in the final quarter.

The Rocky Mountain 4-H Swine Club has had many activities since our reorganizational meeting in October. We have had 4 club meetings, attended 3 district meetings, and 2 committee meetings.

In November we laid a wreath at the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the community hall. Our club attended the District Executive Workshop at the horseshoe pavilion. Also the RMSC participated in the Parade Of Lights, our hard work in planning,decorating,and working together paid off by receiving second place for our float.

Pincher Creek's Senior Huskies hockey team has folded, sources have confirmed.  The team was formed in 2012 to allow area players to compete in the Ranchland Hockey League (RHL) after the demise of the Peigan Cowboys at the end of the 2011/12 season.  With the Huskies out the RHL is down to three teams as playoffs approach.

The members of the Blood Tribe, their elected officials and their agencies have been expressing their deep concerns for the illicit drug trade on the Blood Reserve and a number of deaths that they believe to be related to the use of pills sold as Oxycodone. The Medical Examiner has not yet confirmed this information in relation to any of the deaths concerned.

These pills appear to be counterfeit and are not likely bonafide Oxycodone produced by a legitimate pharmaceuRcal manufacturer. They are sold illegally. They are believed to contain fentanyl which, according to the literature available, can easily lead to a physical dependency and offer a high risk of overdose and death. Illegal pills of this nature have recently been discovered in several police searches in various locations across Alberta and have been reported in the press.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) responded to multiple vehicle rollovers on Highway 22, beginning at approximately 7:00 pm yesterday evening, January 23. Pincher Creek and Lundbreck Fire responded with personnel and equipment, and RCMP was also on scene.  Volker Stevin helped by diverting traffic.  Highway 22 was blocked approximately 15 km north of Highway 3 for a time, with traffic being diverted onto back roads east of the highway. According to Environment Canada, near Lundbreck gusts as high as 157 km/h were reported at 7:20 pm MST.   According to the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale that ranks as Hurricane 2 force winds.  It was accompanied by a very light rain, blowing debris, and blowing gravel on the back roads.

Brayden Provost, a student at St. Michael's school, will be playing in a golf match against the USA National Jr. Golf team in San Diego next month.  Brayden currently participates in the  High Performance golf program headquartered in Lethbridge. They practice every weekend at Evergreen Golf Centre (Lethbridge) and inside at the Henderson Lake Golf Club.

Brayden and his dad Kevin participated in a two-person scramble tournament in Mesquite, Nevada over the Christmas holidays as part of a week-long practice session and placed second out of 75 other two person teams.

Pincher Creek A Girls Matthew Halton Hawks triumphed on their home court with a definitive win against the Crowsnest Pass Pandas on Thursday, January 23.  The first moments the game were breathtaking with each team scoring 2 points in the first 30 seconds.  The Hawks quickly outdistanced the Pandas and widened the lead for the majority of the game. Dakota Bruder repeatedly sank some clean baskets (high scorer with 12 points) and Mackenzie Van Loon was a defensive force to be reckoned with.  Crowsnest Pass had a very short bench, making for a tough game, with Ashley Vigna and Haylie Williams scoring well for their team.

Pincher Creek B Boys Matthew Halton Hawks hosted Crowsnest Pass Panthers on Thursday, January 23. It was a relatively close game in the first quarter, but the Panthers pushed hard, winning the game by a wide margin. Panthers Aden Janson and Spencer Dorge tied for team high score with 10 points each and high scorer for the Hawks was Ben Mitchell with 7 points. Hawks Coach Gerald Erickson sees a definite improvement in the Hawks game, even if the final score did not reflect it.

St. Michael's A Boys Dragons #16 Ben Cooley sunk this nice one during their contest last Thursday against Livingstone's Sabres.  The Sabres won, but not after a very dramatic game between two very well matched opponents (stay tuned for that story).

St. Michael's Kindergarten class made a field trip to Ranchland Mall today, January 23. The children had the chance to visit in Co-op Food Store and find out more about what people do in their jobs there, including the bakery where they sampled cupcakes. They went to Parent Link and played, tried on costumes, and listened at storytime. Teacher Mrs. Adamson said that this was a good learning experience for experiencing places in our community and learning about different jobs that people do.

December was a super busy month. The first week was getting ready for the big Tea and Bazaar. Pricing and setting up for the big day was a big chore made easy with lots of help from the residents. Most of the residents didn’t hesitate to help out and we had fun laughing and reminiscing over last year’s busy Bazaar and how cold it was -36 with the wind chill made it -46. The Bazaar was a great success! A Grand Total of $ 4,271.00! From all the hard work of residents and family members as well as the generosity from our community. A huge thank you to everyone that help with donations. Your generosity has made this year’s fundraiser a huge success!  Also a big congratulations again to our winners of the raffle draw. First prize was a 50 inch smart TV that was won by Lorraine Loeffler. Second prize, the extra-large gift basket was won by Celia Tienkamp and third prize, the $200.00 gift certificate for meat at Back Country Butchers was won by Marlene Hochstein.

AltaLink proposes another route for Castle Rock Ridge to Chapel Rock power line

AltaLink is offering another route for the Castle Rock Ridge to Chapel Rock power line. There had been a number of objections to the 240-KV line running from Chapel Rock, heading northwest, crossing the 22 Highway and connecting to another power line at Chapel Rock. AltaLink informed Crowsnest Pass Council that the line could also run parallel with another line from the Goose Lake Substation heading west to Burmis. The line would run northwest across the highway, onto municipal land. AltaLink Spokesman John Grove piqued councils attention when he said the power line would give the Pass 80 to 100 thousand dollars in linear taxes. The utility will seek feedback at open meetings held in Cowley February 10, and Lundbreck February 11. Both will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Crowsnest Pass Councillor Shar Lazzarotto suggested an open house also be held in the Crowsnest Pass.

Edmonton, Alberta - There will be an regimental funeral to honour the life and service of Constable David Matthew Wynn of the St. Albert Detachment on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 2 p.m. Servus Credit Union Place in of St. Albert, Alberta.

The event will be televised live and the media will be provided with more information about event coverage as it becomes available tomorrow.

Vehicle hits deer at junction of Highway 3 and Highway 785

Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) Rescue vehicle responded to a call at approximately 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening, January 21 to the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 785. A vehicle hit a deer and a small amount of fluid leaked from the vehicle. The responding crew cleaned up the scene, and there were no injuries reported.

A win and a loss at home for the Peewee Chinooks

Pincher Creek's Peewee Chinooks were able to split back-to back-games last weekend, on January 17th and 18th. The first game against the Fort Macleod Mustangs resulted in a substantial loss for the Peewee Chinooks. Luckily for the Chinooks it was only an exhibition match set up as a practice against a tougher team, preparation for an upcoming tournament. For the second game the Chinooks were on the other side of a blowout, rolling over the Kainai Chiefs for a huge win. Caleb Evans had a penalty shot that excited the Chinooks late in the third against the Mustangs but couldn't capitalize. The game against the Chiefs had some excitement late in game as well, when there was an argument between the Kainai coach and the refs, and then not that much later a Kainai player was kicked out of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Lethbridge police seeking public assistance to locate missing woman and child

Lethbridge Regional Police have not yet located a missing 28-year-old woman and her eight-month-old son and continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.

Lizzie Across the Mountain and her son, Wylie Weasel Mocassin, were last seen in Lethbridge on January 17.  Police are aware of posts on social media sites indicating Across the Mountain and her son are safe, however investigators have not been able to confirm this information.  Investigators are appealing to Across the Mountain to contact police directly so arrangements can be made to confirm the well-being of her and her son.

Photos of Across the Mountain and Weasel Mocassin have now been obtained and are included for release.
