Upon arriving on scene, the driver of the pickup truck had to be extricated from the vehicle. The male driver along with another male passenger in the truck were transported to Lethbridge Regional Hospital via ground ambulance. The driver of the semi was not injured. The driver of the pickup truck was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Names are not being released at this time pending notifications of next of kin.

The fire was eventually extinguished by the Fire Department at which time the driver of the semi was located deceased within the truck's cab. The driver of the gravel truck did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision. The deceased's identity is being confirmed through the Medical Examiner's office.

“The RCMP's overriding goal is to ensure safe homes and safe communities for Canadians. We believe that marihuana use and the criminality that surrounds it harms individuals and communities,” says Inspector Kevin Murray.

To put these seizures of drugs into perspective, 5 ½ pounds of marijuana translates into approximately 5,000 individual marijuana joints. Cocaine is usually consumed by 1/10th of a gram at a time. The 2 seizures of approximately 5 ounces of cocaine each translates into approximately 2,800 “hits” of cocaine. The amount of methamphetamine seized translates into approximately 1,400 “hits” of meth.

This solid, proactive investigative work by the St. Albert RCMP Drug Section is one of the policing strategies aimed at keeping St. Albert safe and drugs out of the hands of St. Albert youth. A second strategy is for the RCMP to partner with the residents of St. Albert by encouraging “tips” about drug dealers to be called in to the confidential St. Albert RCMP Drug Tip Line at 780 460 3784 (DRUG). If you have any information about drug dealers operating in or around St. Albert, be part of the solution and leave your Tip on the Tip Line.

Lac La Biche RCMP with the assistance of RCMP Integrated Traffic Services, Alberta Conservation, Fish and Wildlife and Alberta Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers teamed up between June 27 and July 1, 2014 and again on July 6, 2014 to make local highways safer.

Officers conducted different enforcement strategies that included vehicle checkstops, speed enforcement and boat checks at surrounding lakes.

Throughout the campaign officers checked approximately 800 vehicles and 15 boats/water craft. Officers issued a total of 86 violation tickets for various offences. These violation tickets included 2 for a child under 16 not wearing a seat belt, 5 liquor offences for alcohol inside vehicles and with in access to an occupant and 47 speeding tickets. Police also dealt with two male drivers who were travelling at speeds of 151 and 161 in a 100k/hr section of highway.

Police also located one vehicle travelling at 143k/hr in a 100k/hr section and while stopping the vehicle the driver was observed discarding a case of beer out of the vehicle window into the oncoming lane of traffic. The 25 old male driver was charged with several offences; the most serious being criminal code charges for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by Police and failing to comply with conditions.

The Lac La Biche RCMP also received a total of 114 calls for Police assistance between June 27 and July 1, 2014.

These enforcement campaigns are part of an ongoing commitment by the Lac La Biche RCMP Detachment to work with partner agencies to reduce collisions on provincial highways and to educate drivers to drive responsibly.

Special Olympics Free the Fuzz fundraiser in Lethbridge this weekend

Officers from the Lethbridge Regional Police Service, Alberta Sheriffs, Alberta Correctional Services and RCMP will be at both Lethbridge Wal-Mart locations this weekend to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics.
