Community, cultural and sports groups invited to Lethbridge "Win the Games” info session

Susan Eymann, ChPC Executive Director

Representatives from community and cultural groups from across the city of Lethbridge are participating in a brief session on Tuesday, July 15 to firm up their support for the 2019 Canada Winter Games bid.

A site selection committee visits Lethbridge on Thursday, August 21. Numerous events are planned that day to show and tell why Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta is the natural choice for this massive national event, which would take place in February, 2019.

The meeting takes place beginning at 5.p.m. at the Lethbridge Public Library Theatre Gallery, Main Branch, 810 5th Avenue South.

“Many community sport and cultural groups have already made significant commitments, but we want to ensure that people receive a final reminder about this session, and be able to send a representative,” said Stephen Neis, the 2019 Canada Winter Games Bid Committee Chair. “We have a strong bid in place, and we are confident that we have the experience, people, facilities, services and volunteers to make this a memorable event. We further want to ensure we communicate with as many groups as possible to gain their input and support.”
The Canada Winter Games is the nation’s largest multi-sport event and will bring nearly 5,000 athletes, coaches, officials and local, regional and national media representatives to Lethbridge, Pincher Creek, Castle Mountain and southwestern Alberta in February 2019, should the Lethbridge bid be successful. In addition to providing memorable experiences for visitors to the Games, the event provides an opportunity to generate significant economic benefits, a shared sense of community pride and games legacies. Lethbridge has an excellent track record of hosting major sport events beginning with the 1975 Canada Winter Games and, more recently, the 2012 Alberta Summer Games, the 2012 Ford World’s Women Curling and, coming in February 2015, the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games.
Recently, Lethbridge City Council approved the 2019 Canada Winter Games Bid Committee’s efforts to win the Games for southwestern Alberta, and Lethbridge College announced a significant commitment to support the Games.  Click here for more information about that.
