A 22-year-old male who fell out of a moving vehicle last week has succumbed to his injuries. Hayden Reeves Heavy Shields, 22, of Lethbridge, died in Calgary Foothills Hospital over the weekend.

On June 6, 2014 at approximately 4 a.m. the male was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital with life-threatening head injuries. Investigation determined that the male had been riding in the box of a pick-up truck in the area of 9 Avenue and 5 Street South, when he fell out and struck his head. The male was subsequently transported by STARS air ambulance to Calgary. He died Saturday.

Investigation determined that drugs and alcohol were a factor in this incident.

Police previously charged the 19-year-old driver of the vehicle, Venessa Lilian Francis, with one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. As the victim has died from his injuries, upgraded charges are pending. Francis is scheduled to appear in court June 16.

Missing person in Upper Kananaskis Lake

On June 8, 2014 at approximately 7:15 pm Kananaskis RCMP officers were dispatched to a missing person complaint at the Upper Kananaskis Lake in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Unfortunately, by the time the bystander reached the location, nobody could be located. This bystander then had to be rescued by the Alberta Tourism Parks and Recrecation Public Safety Officer flying with an Alpine helicopter who were assisting in the search.

Male arrested after crime spree in Red Deer

A series of crimes committed by a single suspect kept a number of Red Deer RCMP busy for more than an hour on the south end of Red Deer on June, ending in the suspect’s arrest in the Bower neighbourhood.

The string of events began with an armed robbery at the Gaetz Avenue Liquor Store. The male suspect produced a knife and left the store with two bottles of liquor. Upon leaving the store, the suspect stole a red Honda Acura and left the scene. While fleeing the area in the stolen vehicle, the suspect struck another vehicle at 47 Avenue and 30 Street in front of Sunnybrook Farm. The suspect then fled the collision scene on foot, leaving the female driver trapped in her vehicle. While Red Deer Fire and EMS attended that scene to extricate the female from her vehicle, the suspect was seen running south into the Bower neighbourhood. Various witnesses tracked the suspect’s movements to Sims Furniture and Bower Place Shopping Centre. The suspect then attempted to enter several homes before police located him in the back yard of a private residence. Upon being confronted by police, the suspect pulled out a knife, threatened police and resisted arrest; he was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

There were no injuries as a result of the armed robbery of the liquor store. The female victim of the hit and run has been taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital with unconfirmed injuries; she was conscious and verbal at last report. No RCMP were injured, and the suspect sustained minor injuries while resisting arrest.

At this point, RCMP continue to piece together the details of this series of events and interview witnesses. They are also investigating a report that the suspect struck another vehicle before colliding with the female victim in front of Sunnybrook Farm, and are working to locate that vehicle and driver.

RCMP would like to thank the many members of the public who provided valuable information on the suspect’s location. RCMP will provide updates as more information becomes available. The suspect’s name and the charges against him will be released once the charges have been sworn before the courts.

Anyone with information that may assist the police in investigating these crimes is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403.343.5575. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or report it online at www.tipsubmit.com.
