"Parents and Guardians, this is the culmination of 157,680 hours or 18 years of parenting," said Mistress of Ceremonies Hilary Matheson during her introductory remarks at Matthew Halton School's Class of 2014 Graduation Ceremony, themed 'We Made It'.
"It's a special day for everyone."
The event began with a processional of graduands and their escorts, followed by the singing of 'O Canada' by graduand Alyssa Barbero, which was followed by a speech from Grad President TJ Ratzloff.
"Kindergarten is where we learned all the basics," said Ratzloff. "We learned to share, how to count, and even how to spell our name. Kindergarten was an important starting block, because it marked the beginning of a 13 year journey. A journey that would prepare us for what is commonly referred to as 'The real world'."
"Senior High is extremely stressful, and at times can feel overwhelming, and never-ending. At times it was challenging, but never did we have to face it alone. Thanks to our amazing teachers, parents and guardians, we are able to be here today celebrating the end of one of the most challenging journeys we have had."
"To my fellow graduates, with the wise words of Neil Gaiman I say this:'Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Leave the world more interesting for your being here.'”
Guest speaker Jill Klapp advised the students to be prepared for many changes in their adult lives. "I firmly believe that you are living in an age that you are going to have a lifetime of figuring out, and changing careers as you proceed." She read from a list of suggestions, including "Put your cellphones away. Be present," and "never tattoo your face".
"It has been my pleasure to spend the last 3 years teaching you in one capacity or another, and being with you every day."
Alyssa Barbero returned to center stage to sing Miranda Lambert's poignant 'The House that Built Me'. Then Troy Hasselman and Will Noel read humourous class prophecies, which was followed by a slideshow prepared by graduand Sabrina Stushnoff. Troy Hasselman performed a delightful version of 'Blackbird', originally by the Beatles, and closing remarks were primarily provided by Hilary Matheson.
"This is your day," said Matheson. "Be proud of your accomplishments to date, and spend time reflecting on your time in high school, and what you have learned about yourselves, and the world around you. Yes, you made it. You have accomplished one step on the staircase of life. There are many more steps to climb and goals to accomplish."
"This graduation represents not just an end to one phase of your life, it is the beginning of the rest of your life."
"You will now be taking the next step, and reaching towards your goals."
"For many of you, that will mean leaving Pincher Creek to pursue your dreams, while for others it will mean staying here to achieve your goals. Learning lasts a lifetime, it doesn't end with school graduation. we hope that you will continue to learn, love, and yes, laugh often."
"We want you to pursue your dreams, and achieve your goals."
"Pincher Creek will always be home, and we will always welcome you."
