St. Michael's Junior A and B Boys basketball teams hosted their counterparts from Livingstone School the evening of Thursday, January 9.  The B Dragons won their game, and the A Sabres won their game.

B game

The Junior B teams took to the court first.  Both the Dragon and Sabres teams are demonstrating a good working knowledge of the fundamentals of the game.  There was good passing between team members and both ends of the court worked hard to defend their territory.  Dragon Chris Alexander was the high scorer for the game with 14 points, followed closely by teammates Jordan Hochstein and Liam VanEe with twelve points each.  For the Sabres the high scorer was Cole Schweb with 9 points.

Both teams looked like they were having fun.  Sabres Coach Everett Nowlin was not disappointed with the final score of 62 -25 for the Dragons win.  He was more interested to see that his players are improving at working together, and that the scoring among his team members was close to even.  "It was good, I was happy with what they did," said Nowlin.  "There were good players on the St. Mike's team."

Both the Junior A Dragons and Sabres teams showed a dedication to the sport that makes one eager to see these two teams face each other as they mature.

A game

During the A game the Dragons were quickly outpaced on the scoreboard but they never stopped putting on the pressure, making the Sabres fight for every point they got.

My favorite moment of the game was when Levi of the Sabres got control of the ball in his own defensive zone, and ran.  He saw his opportunity not just to defend, but to possibly score, and he literally ran with it, leaving both teams racing after him as he went for the hoop.  Basketball is filled with split-second timing and fast decisions.  Dragon Mitchell was the top team scorer with 9 points and Brady from the Sabres scored 12 points.  Livingstone won the game 38 - 22.

"They did good,"said Dragons Coach Mark Zoratti.  This was the third league game for the team.  Sabres Coach Paul Erickson was pleased with how his team performed for what was also their third league game of season.  Erickson said that the Sabres A Boys had played one tournament and received second place.
