Pincher Creek's RHL Huskies played two games recently.  They hosted Lomond on November 9 for a very close game that ended with Lomond ahead 6-5.  Then the Huskies took their recharged show to Nanton on Saturday November 15.  The Huskies won that one 10-7.

Huskies vs Lakers Nov. 9

The Huskies were in fine form in this very close contest with Lomond's Lakers on November 9, which was held at Pincher Creek's Memorial Community Centre arena with  The first period was fast-paced and high-scoring.  The Lakers hammered the Huskies' net early in the period.  The result was first goal for Lomond at 4:54 into  the period when after several near misses by the Lakers #15 Ty Odland scored, a long shot from the blueline straight in,  assisted by Jonny Badura and Danton Shigemi.

Huskies #16 Darren Andre tied it up 1-1 with a goal at the 14:31 mark, with assists going to Matthew Hammel and Shawn Robertson.  Huskies #7 Alex Elliott scored a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 14:00 mark, assisted by Hayden Shackel to make it 2-1 Huskies.

Less than a minute later Lakers' #6 Rustin Murray tied it 2-2, with assists going to Riley Honess and another one for Jonny Badura.  Then at the 12:43 mark Lakers #21 Dustin Brosz scored, assisted by Mathew Mahoney and Benji Husband.  3-2 Lakers.

With 8:35 remaining in the first period Darren Andre scored his second goal of the game for the Huskies, again assisted by Matthew Hammel.  3-3. Then it was Dustin Brosz assisted by Benji Husband again to put the Lakers ahead 4-3, which is where it stood at the end of the period.

Danny Wilk of the Lakers took a 10 minute misconduct at the halfway point of the second period, and his teammate David Foord was given a game misconduct shortly after that.

It was just that kind of game.  The Huskies were hungry for a win and the Lakers had no intention to let them have one.

Just 2:29 into the second period Huskies #18 Randy Wittkopf tied it 4-4 by picking up the puck quick and slamming it home, assisted by Shelden Fillipuzzi and Will Thorpe.  A well coached line.  Wittkopf took a hard thump-and-tumble immediately after his shot went in.

The Lakers pulled ahead again with a powerplay goal by #16 Riley Honess, assisted by Rustin Murray and Ty Odland. 5-4 Lakers.  Over to you Huskies, and #16 Darren Andre was the one to tie it 5-5 on a quick rebound of an Alex Elliott attempt.  Elliott got an assist, as did Jeremy Davidson. Hat trick for Darren Andre.

Sizeable fights near the 10:00 mark in the second led to multiple penalties including a game misconduct and a five minute major misconduct for Will Thorpe (Huskies) and a game misconduct for Rustin Murray (Lakers).

The score stayed tied 5-5 to the end of the second period.

The Lakers scored early in the third period, a powerplay goal by #9 Cam Hurt just 54 seconds in, assisted by Maverick Blair.  The period played out without further scoring, despite an intense back and forth for all of it.  The only penalties of the period went to the Lakers, including a 10 minute misconduct for Dustin Brosz.

53 penalty minutes total served by the Lakers in this game, compared to 25 for the Huskies.

Final score: Lakers 6, Huskies 5.  Stars of the game were Cam Hurt (Lakers), Darren Andre (Huskies), and Randy Wittkopf (Huskies)
