Pincher Creek's 2013 High School Rodeo kicked off today, August 31 with a full slate of events.  It runs for one more day - Sunday, September 1, starting at 9:00 am with Girls and Boys cutting in the Horseshoe Pavilion, followed by multiple events starting at 11:00 am and running all day at the Pincher Creek Rodeo Grounds.

Events include Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Breakaway Roping, Tie-Down Roping, Goat Tying, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, and Cutting.

There are lots of kids from the Pincher Creek area participating, come out and cheer them on.

Need for a community wheelchair transportation solution

My name is Charleen Bruder.  I am an employee of Good Samaritans and presently work at their facility Vista Village in Pincher Creek.

I have been an active volunteer with an MS patient and have become aware of the lack of wheelchair accessible vehicles for people who are wheelchair bound.

High River Alberta A.F. 2013 is a tale of what is happening after one of the worst catastrophes in the history of Alberta, where many people were adversely affected. The title refers to what was ground zero for many residents of the sleepy southern Alberta community of High River, central to the plot of this historic catastrophe, with  A.F. Meaning “After Flood”.

There is an immutable truth in everyone’s lives.

Time will always continue to flow or march steadily and inexorably forward without any control or intervention on our part.

Local residents Dr. Tom and Edrie Halbert are proud parents after being notified that their son Tom (Tim) Halbert, a 1978 St. Michael's School Graduate, has received Cisco's award as one of the top 25% instructors globally. The competition involves Computer Science teachers, including University and College Professors as well as Cisco's own trained instructors. Cisco is one of the preeminent networking companies in the world.  It designs, manufactures, and sells a wide variety of products and services including routers, data centres, software, etc.  It is considered to be one of the most valuable companies in the world.

On August 29, 2013 Cypress Creek High School technology teacher Tom Halbert was selected by the Cisco Networking Academy as an Advanced Level Instructor.  Cyprus Creek High School is located in Houston Texas.

290,000 Jobs Went Unfilled in Canada in Q2

While labour market pressures eased somewhat in the second quarter, 290,000 full- and part-time private sector jobs still went unfilled for four months or more, according to data compiled by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

The results of the quarterly Help Wanted report are based on responses from 3,526 small business owners, who were surveyed on unfilled jobs in their firms owing to the shortage of qualified labour.

Birth control recall

Freya-28, an oral contraceptive (birth control product), is being voluntarily recalled from the Canadian market by Mylan Pharmaceuticals after a pharmacy reported that a placebo pill was found in place of an active pill in one package. Packages of Freya-28 (see pictures below) should have three rows of active (white) pills and one row of placebo (green) pills.

Missing one or more active (white) pills could result in reduced effectiveness for contraception, with the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy. As of August 27, 2013, there had been no adverse reactions reported to Mylan Pharmaceuticals.

Grass fire west of Crowsnest/Pincher Creek landfill quickly controlled

At approximately 6 pm on Friday, August 30 Pincher Creek responded to a call involving a stubble fire in a grain field west of the Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill. Units from Pincher Creek, Beaver Mines, Cowley and Lundbreck were dispatched.

Lundbreck's was the first unit on the scene, and farmers had the fire under control when they arrived.  All other units stood down.  Fire Chief Dave Cox estimated that 10 to 15 acres of  land were affected.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services also provided assistance at an accident scene on Highway 3 on Thursday night,August 29, which occurred around 11:30 pm about 13 kilometres west of Fort Macleod.  Multiple injuries resulted when two pickup trucks collided on the highway.  Ambulance crews from Pincher Creek, Piikani, and Fort Macleod assisted with the injured.

Charges laid in fatal Aug. 1 Highway 3 collision

Crowsnest Pass RCMP with the assistance of Lethbridge Traffic Services have laid charges in the fatal motor wehicle collision that occurred on August 1 on Highway 3 east of Bellevue, AB.

Nicole Denise Stubbs of Raymond has been charged with one count of Dangerous Driving Causing Death. Her first court date is scheduled for November 19 in Pincher Creek Provincial Court.

The weather was co-operative for the Southwest Barrel Racing Series make-up event held on Wednesday eveing August 28 at the Pincher Creek Rodeo Grounds.
This event and one planned for next Wednesday evening (tentatively to be held in Hillspring) are make-up events as a couple of the 2013 series events planned for earlier this summer had to be postponed due to excessive rain.

It seems obvious: If a child struggles with vision, it will interfere with how they do at school, and how they feel in general. And still, vision problems have to be quite severe before a child will report it to a parent – this is because the child’s poor or difficult vision is just normal.

The parent will never know, even though the child might have tantrums, headaches, trouble focusing, inattention, and reading and learning concerns.

Car collides with gravel truck on Highway 3

Piikani and Fort Macleod RCMP and first responders were called to the scene of an accident between a small car and a gravel truck on Highway 3 near Range Road 27 east of Brocket this morning at approximately 10:30 am.

According to RCMP Constable Anderson the car hit the back of the gravel truck and ended up in the ditch.  Two occupants of the car were transported to hospital in Fort Macleod with minor injuries.  The driver of the gravel truck was not injured.

Highway 3 was open to one-way traffic only for about half an hour while the incident was dealt with.

Alberta’s first two cases of West Nile virus confirmed

• Albertans are reminded to take steps to keep themselves and their families safe, after the first two confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in 2013.

The first case was acquired in mid-August in southern Alberta. The individual is female. The second case was a male who also acquired West Nile virus during mid-August in southern Alberta. Both cases are West Nile Non-neurological Syndrome and both are between 40 and 55 years of age.

PCES quells small railway fire

Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) received a call from a local rancher this morning reporting a sighting of smoke from the railway tracks southeast of town that lead to the Shell Waterton plant.  One tender and an engine responded from Pincher Creek.

Emergency Services Chief Dave Cox said that nce on-scene the responders found that some of the wood used on the rail crossing was smouldering, probably due to routine  maintenance grinding of the tracks that was observed near the location of the fire yesterday evening.

Cox said the fire was doused quickly.

The Wednesday August 28, 2013 issue of the Crowsnest Pass Promoter will be the last for the publication.  Sun Media Group Publisher Nancy Middleton announced the closure on Friday last week.  According to the Promoter's article about the closure, two full-time and one part-time position will be affected.  The Promoter had been sharing staff with the Pincher Creek Echo, which is also owned by Sun Media.

Editor Joni MacFarlane was the mainstay at the Promoter, editing the newspaper for about 6 years.  In an email she expressed sadness and a desire to remain optimistic about her own future. I worked part-time for MacFarlane and the Promoter (my full-time job was split between the Echo and the Promoter) prior to starting the Pincher Creek Voice, and know her to be a dedicated and highly qualified journalist.

Pincher Creek Dolphins attend 2013 ASSA Provincial Championships meet in Edmonton

19 members of Pincher Creek's Dolphins Swim Club attended to 2013 Alberta Summer Swimming Association (ASSA) Provincial Championships meet held on August 16.  55 teams participated, and our Dolphins placed 10th overall.

In total the Dolphins earned 6 Gold medals, 4 Silver medals, 4 Bronze medals, 16 Personal Bests, 10 new Dolphins Club records, and a new Regional* record by Assistant Coach Ardelle Layden.  Layden had a great meet, establishing a new Provincial Record in the Girls 18 and Over Freestyle with a time of 1:04.67 and earning 2 Gold medals and a Silver in addition to establishing new Personal Bests AND Dolphins Club records in all four of her events.

"We've been cooking steady," said MD of Pincher Creek Councillor Garry Marchuk when we arrived at the pancake breakfast opener to the 2013 Lundbreck Cornfest on Saturday morning August 24.  Marchuk was manning the grill at the time, flipping a batch of goodly-sized pancakes. Kimberly Hurst member of the Lundbreck Citizens Council concurred with his opinion. "The hall has been full steady all morning, it's been a great crowd," she said.  "We have a lot of teams in this year's softball tourney."

Following the recent Ranchland Hockey League (RHL) AGM on August 25th,  the Okotoks Drillers were officially announced as a new team in the league, which now has 5 teams scheduled for the 2013-2014 season. The Drillers will be playing out of a new complex being built in Okotoks.  The RHL is a Senior Hockey Alberta league which includes Pincher Creek's Senior Huskies, a team that first competed last season.

We have seen the problems that George Porter identified in other communities (Concerns aired about changes to rural ambulance services) that have gone to direct delivery of ambulance service by AHS. We have been able to shield our community from these problems by remaining a supplier of ambulance service. This ability is enhanced by many of our members being cross trained in both medical and fire/ rescue response creating a depth in our organization a single service provider (medical only) does not enjoy.

Football 101 with Coach Wayne Alexander to be held Thursday August 29

Senior Mustangs Head Coach Wayne Alexander will be holding a free Football 101 course for parents of football players and others with an interest in understanding more about the sport.  The first public Football 101 course will be held Thursday August 29 at the Ranchland Mall in the old Fields store location at 7:00 pm.  The course is expected to take about 45 minutes, and Coach Alexander plans to hold one later in the season for those that cannot attend this one.

Quad accident victim leaves town by STARS

On August 26 at approximately 6:00 pm Pincher Creek Rescue and Pincher Creek Ambulance responded to a quad accident 4 miles south of the town of Pincher Creek.

The female driver of the quad was injured and STARS air ambulance was put on alert due to the nature of her injuries.

The victim was transported to Pincher Creek Hospital then transported to Calgary by STARS.

Town of Pincher Creek Councillor Don Anderberg had a special addition to his report at the council's meeting earlier this evening, August 26.  "I have an announcement to make.  For Council for next term I'm going to let my name to stand for Mayor," he told council.  "I made my decision a week ago Sunday."

The work of two local artists will be highlighted in an art showing called 'Seeing Through It' at the Casa Gallery of the Lethbridge Community Arts Centre.  The opening reception is scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 pm with the show running through October 26.

The show will feature the creations of Mike Judd,  James Palmer, Eric Marens, and Blake Wilson. Palmer and Judd live in the Pincher Creek area.  Palmer is currently teaching landscape painting in association with Pincher Creek Allied Arts.

What to do with an injured duck?

Early in the evening last week we found an injured duck in our front yard. When we found the duck our first reaction was to call the Fish and Wild Life Association. They did not have anyone available unless the animal was being poached or becoming dangerous.

Fish and Wild Life then gave us the phone number to the Regional Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. After giving out our location they realized they could not do any thing because we were too far away.

The Rehabilitation Centre next gave us the number for a voice mail in Coaldale. After waiting over half an hour, and not getting anywhere, we contacted the RCMP to collect the duck. We all know this is not the RCMP's job, my question is this: Who do you call and/or what do you do?

Changes to Student Aid Alberta program announced

Starting this year, post-secondary students who have been approved for Alberta and Canada student loans will need to submit just one set of paper loan agreements. When returning students apply to Student Aid Alberta in future years, they will no longer need to submit new loan agreements and will benefit from a mainly paperless process.

Also new this year is a grant for students in one-year, undergraduate certificate programs who meet eligibility requirements. This year, it’s expected approximately 5,000 Albertans will be eligible for the grant, which is valued at $120 per month of study.

RCMP looking to locate owner of possibly Stolen Property

The Grande Prairie Rural RCMP are looking to locate the lawful owners of a trailer and generator that were recovered in early August.

In early August the Grande Prairie RCMP recovered a Royal white cargo trailer, along with a Whisperquit 7000 generator. Police believe that the items were stolen as the vehicle identification number (V.I.N.) on the trailer had been partially removed and the generator had been painted grey. A photograph of the generator is shown below.

RCMP are hoping that the owners of the property will come forward so that it can be returned to them. If this is your property or you know who it belongs to please contact the Grande Prairie Detachment at 780-830-5700.

Waterton RCMP investigating death of scuba diver

RCMP Waterton Park in conjunction with the Calgary Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the death of 56 old male from Calgary that occurred in Waterton National Park on August 24, 2013.

The male was scuba diving with a group in Upper Waterton Lake in the area of Waterton Park Townsite and was found unconscious in the water by another diver in the group. He was immediately brought to the surface and to the nearby shore where resuscitation efforts were not successful.

The investigation is continuing.

 

Emergency Services responds to Snake Trail area grass fire

A lightning strike east of the Snake Trail (northeast of Cowley in the Porcupines area)  started a grass fire on Friday evening  August 23.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services was called to respond at 5:30 pm.  Two units responded from Cowley and three responded from Pincher Creek.  Local ranchers and landowners were on scene where the department arrived and already had the fire partially controlled.  According to Fire Chief Dave Cox, the area was difficult to access.

The area affected approximately 1.5 acres.   The fire was out before 8:00 pm but one crew stayed until after dark to make sure the area was clear.

 Gerry writes: "Lately we have had 3 owls that come around at night. These owls do not hoot, they screech. Last night (AUgust 20) at 9:40 pm we heard a screech and saw one of these owls on our clothesline post. The moon was low to the east over the Castle River arm of the reservoir. No time for a tripod - ISO 1600 and shoot through 3 panes of glass. You see the result. We did some more research on the owls and have come to the conclusion from looking at pictures and listening to calls online that the only match for what we see and hear is a juvenile Great Horned Owl, not a Short eared owl as originally thought."
