Pincher Creek's Adult Learning Council is planning some major restructuring. Lethbridge College's Pincher Creek Campus is closing at the end of June, and the two learning facilities have shared office space, staff, and equipment and other resources for close to two decades, under these names and previously as the Chinook Educational Consortium.
"For now, our programs will continue on in our Co-op Mall location until our usual closing time at the end of June," said Adult Learning and Literacy Coordinator Monica Sczryba-Davis. "When we reopen again in September, it will be at our new location in St. Michael's School."
St. Michael's has worked with the Adult Learning Council (ALC) to provide access to classrooms, and kitchen, gym and computer lab facilities. This will make a large difference to the Council because much of the equipment they have been using is owned by Lethbridge College. The equipment at the school will also create new programming alternatives in the future. The Council is hoping to be able to continue having invigilating and monitored testing done through their new facility.
This will not be the only transition for the ALC. Sczryba-Davis will be leaving on maternity leave early in June. To make sure that everything goes smoothly Jenny Vandersteen will be starting on May 1st and looking after the Fall Calendar project.
Vandersteen has worked for the Adult Learning Council in the past and will be working with the Council until June of 2014. Vandersteen encourages anyone that would like to start a class to contact the Council with their proposal as soon as possible. She will have to get the Calendar built and off to the printer before the middle of June, as the distribution date is September 1, 2013.
ALC's English as a Second Language (ESL) conversation group will continue to be held Thursdays at 5:00 pm at Mrs. P's in the Ranchland Mall. "It's a way for us to put our feelers into the community, once we have them at the conversation group, we can partner them up with a tutor," explained Sczryba-Davis who said the group is a casual get together that will continue throughout the summer. She was delighted with all the support they have received throughout this time of change. "I appreciate that Adult Learning will continue in our community."
