Long weekend enforcement already underway

Officers from the Integrated Traffic Units (ITU) throughout the Province of Alberta have already been hard at work, trying to keep the highways safe this holiday long weekend.

Yesterday, Thursday May 16th, 2013,  officers from the four QEII Integrated Traffic Units (Airdrie, Innisfail, Ponoka and Leduc) participated in a coordinated enforcement project on Highway #2 from Calgary to Edmonton.   As many 40 officers were deployed using a variety of tactics to ensure motorists were driving safe and following the rules of the road.   Just one day of enforcement resulted in the following on Highway #2:

  •  273 Speeding charges, including four drivers who were traveling more than 150km/h in heavy, holiday long weekend traffic,
  • 24 Seatbelt charges,
  • 36 Distracted driving (cell phone) charges,
  • 91 Other Traffic Safety Act charges, and
  • One Impaired Driver was removed from the highway and has been charged criminally.

“Enforcement during Holiday long weekends is a priority for the Integrated Traffic Units.   Tragically, fatal and serious injury collisions tend to occur more frequently during holiday long weekends.  Our officers will be paying particular attention to intercepting aggressive speeding drivers, distracted drivers, drivers not wearing seatbelts, consuming alcohol, or failing to obey traffic control devices at rural intersections.  We will be working hard all weekend, trying to ensure that everyone reaches their intended destination safely.”  said Staff Sergeant Brian QUIST, Regional Traffic Commander of the QEII - Integrated Traffic Units.

ITU enforcement priorities have been identified as a result of the comprehensive study of provincial collision data, which indicates that these driving infractions are the most frequent contributing casual factors to fatality and serious injury collisions throughout the province.

RCMP and Sheriffs are integrating provincial traffic resources around the province.
