Celebration held at Brocket School

Spiritriver Striped Wolf, Pincher Creek Voice

This past Friday, September 7 was a really exciting day for Brocket School as it proceeded with the opening ceremony for its students. “We had a great opening ceremonies celebration today!” said Principal Rudy Shuh. “Students, teachers and elders shared a wonderful morning together. The elders shared their knowledge with the students, the school drum group sang honour songs, and other students shared in the annual flag raising celebration.  We have a great group of students at Piikani and are looking forward to a great year!”

Raising the flag is a very symbolic day for the school. There have been times when the school was shut down because of a small amount of students — and it’s even a big deal when there’s that risk, so being able to raise the flag means that the school’s alive and the culture and language can be taught to the younger generation, all the way from K4 to Senior High students. I was really honoured that day to be able to raise one of the three very symbolic flags.

The day ended with a round dance, a tradition at the school in the opening ceremonies.

Elsie Crow Shoe and Leo Pard blessed the year for the students with a prayer and Louise English shared words of wisdom for the students. She talked about how it’s always a great pride when she hears about those that graduate from this school, because it means that the importance of culture is being passed down, and that it keeps the students knowing who they are.

  1. History, Education and knowledge will keep culture alive and well for everyone. It is great that this school a living example to all here in Alberta. Our Heritage is important and needs to be preserved during our path forward into the future. As soon as this article was submitted the past has happened and is affecting future generations of readers and knowledge seekers. We need to step forward and raise flags everywhere to education by learning from the past, preserving our heritage and marching forward into the future, carrying our flags high for all to see that language culture and identity is very important amidst the cookie cutter model being presented to us every day. Let us hope that we are all able to raise flags in our own lives towards a brighter future by embracing and learning from the history being made every day.
