Area closure and fire bans in place for several southern Alberta provincial parks

Due to the extreme fire hazard in parts of southern Alberta, an area closure for Cypress Hills Provincial Park is now in effect and fire bans are in place for several Alberta parks and recreation areas until further notice.

In Cypress Hills Provincial Park, only the Elkwater townsite area and Reesor Lake road through to Saskatchewan remain open. All other roads, hiking and resource trails and areas are closed. Detailed information can be found at www.cypresshills.com

Within the southern region, the following sites have a fire ban in place:

• Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park south of Lethbridge;
• Park Lake Provincial Park north of Coalhurst;
• Lake McGregor Provincial Recreation Area east of High River;
• Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park southeast of Calgary; and,
• Little Bow Provincial Park, Little Bow Recreation Area and Travers Recreation Area, all located north of Lethbridge.

Fire bans prohibit the use of all wood, briquette or propane/natural gas fires, including those contained in designated fire facilities and portable fire pits. Gas and propane stoves and barbecues, when approved for cooking, are allowed.
