POP Radio continues to dial up the hits

Run by Frank van Zandwijk, 102.3 FM Pop Radio plays a mix of the best modern pop and hip-hop music. The 14 year old originally started Pop Radio Pincher Creek in 2011 as an online radio station in order to create more listening options for the people of Pincher Creek. Hosted through www.listen2myradio.com, Frank was able to offer a 24 hour live-stream of popular music aimed at Pincher’s teenage populace.

However, after 6 months the talented teen grew dissatisfied with the online-only experience, seeking to reach a larger audience than he could find on the internet. He decided to expand, buying a HLLY CZH FM transmitter and an antenna; a week later, Pop Radio was on the airwaves.

His equipment set-up is elegant. Alongside the transmitter and laptop he has a single microphone and a Numark Mixtrack Pro turntable, though he is quick to confess he rarely uses the latter on air.

“What I have right now is just the music playing out of the sound card which is transmitting into the FM transmitter, which is transmitting it. It’s much simpler than listen2myradio was," van Zandwijk said. Being home-schooled has helped him keep the radio station up and running over the past couple of years.

Another advantage of being home-schooled is that van Zandwijk can also perform as a member of both the Matthew Halton Junior High and Senior High school bands. Look out for him playing the trombone during their final concert at 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 14, 2012, to be hosted at Matthew Halton School.

    My daughter likes this radio station but we don't get it out in Lundbreck. Can you fix that?

      DJ Frankenstein here, no I can't fix this problem, my transmitter is not strong enough to reach Cowley. Yes I could buy a stronger one but I am still looking into regulations.

      No I cannot fix it right now, my transmitter is just not strong enough to reach Lundbreck. Yes I will be looking into stronger transmitters but I am also still looking at regulations.

    Love having the variety in PC but I'd caution Frank to look into playing the radio-edited versions of the songs and registering his station to adhere to CRTC regulations
