Town and MD of Pincher Creek councils hear STARS appeal

Toni Lucas and Christian Davis - Senior Municipal Relations Liaison for STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) Glenda Farnden appeared as a delegation at the Pincher Creek Town council meeting on Monday, September 12, and again as a delegation before the MD of Pincher Creek No. 9 council the next day.  Farnden said STARS has had a reduction of funding from provincial government commitments and from donations by the oil and gas sector. "We have really tightened our belts to keep everything in check, as much as we can," she told Town council.  According to Farnden STARS has 6 bases in three provinces. "Saving time saves lives," said Farnden. "We must be aware of many diverse situations which we have respond to, day or night."

Crowsnest Royal Canadian Air Cadets recognize achievements, begin new training year

859 Crowsnest Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets -  Flight Sergeant Sadie Bannick was presented with the Air Cadet Long Service Medal on Monday night, September 12th. It reflects 4 years of hard work in the cadet program. She is almost complete her air cadet training and is currently tasked with instructing classes to junior cadets each week. On this same night, a number of other cadets received rank promotions on parade: Matthias Vanderplas and Daniel Poloni were promoted to Flight Corporal, and Elijah Lawson was promoted to Sergeant.

Highway 3 rollover leads to impaired driving charge

Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek RCMP received a call alerting them to someone driving erratically and dangerously on Highway 3 at 5:37 pm Monday, September 12. By the time officers reached the reported vehicle it had rolled over into the ditch beside Highway 3 approximately one kilometre east of of Cowley. RCMP Constable Sherri Flundra said the woman driving the four door sedan had lost control of the vehicle and was charged with impaired driving. Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) and Cowley Fire Department attended the scene, and PCES released the woman on-scene after she refused medical treatment.  "There was extensive damage to the vehicle," said Flundra.

Pincher Planters plan to continue

Toni Lucas - Pincher Planters President John Hancock spoke for the organization as a delegation to the Monday evening September 12 meeting of Pincher Creek's Town Council. Approximately a dozen of the Pincher Planters were in attendance. Hancock spoke in response to a different delegation of the Pincher Planters, Rosaleen Berger and Noreen Robbins, who attended council's Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting on Wednesday, September 7, according to that meeting's agenda. At that meeting council was left with the impression the organization was folding. Hancock said the Pincher Planters will continue to run as a volunteer organization in the town of Pincher Creek, albeit minus three or four members.

The 2016 Pincher Creek Junior and High School Rodeo was held at the Agricultural Grounds September 10 and 11 and had contestants from all over southern Alberta competing.  Pincher Creek area contestants were each eligible for a very special prize: the Altie Rutledge Memorial Trophy, which is given to the local high point contestant each year.  The award was earned this year by  K's Thomson  from Lundbreck, and was presented by Altie’s nephew Steve Rutledge.  Thomson has been an active participant in the Junior and High School Rodeo since he was in grade six and currently is attending Grade 12 at Livingstone School.  The trophy was created to honour the memory of Altie Rutledge, a lifelong rodeo volunteer, following his passing in 1989.  The award was given out for the first time at the 1990 Cowley-Lundbreck Rodeo.

RCMP Alberta, Pincher Creek – It has been one year since the body of Victoria Joanne Crow Shoe was recovered from the shore of the Oldman River Reservoir at the Windy Point day use area on Sunday, September 13, 2015 and the RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance to generate new tips and leads as the investigation into her murder is ongoing.

Ms. Crow Shoe was reported to the Lethbridge Regional Police Service on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 as missing by her family; two days after her body was found near Pincher Creek. Family members last saw Ms. Crow Shoe on August 26, 2015 and the police investigation has been able to establish that the last time that she was seen or spoken to was on Monday, August 31, 2015. Ms. Crow Shoe was known to be living at the Lethbridge Shelter and would often be seen at the library.

CFIA confirms whirling disease in Bow River

Government of Alberta - Today, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the lead federal agency responsible for preventing the spread of animal diseases within Canada, confirmed the presence of whirling disease in the upper Bow River, downstream from the confluence of the Bow River and Cascade River within Banff National Park.

"Canadian Revenue Agency" fraud strikes again

RCMP Alberta - On Thursday, September 8, 2016, St. Albert RCMP received report of a fraud that cost the victim thousands of dollars. The victim was contacted via the telephone, by a male caller who identified himself as a Canadian Revenue Agency representative. The caller advised that the victim owed over $4000.00 from past taxes. The caller stated that if the victim didn't pay the money, he would be arrested. The caller told the victim to purchase gift cards to pay for the debt and then to inform the caller of all the information concerning the gift cards. This interaction was completed solely over the phone.

First Pincher Creek Coder Rodeo teaches robotics and programming skills

Toni Lucas - Six youth spent the week of August 22-26 at the Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek learning how to program robots through the (STEM) Learning Lab Coder Rodeo with STEM Director of Education Sava Knezic. They were given the opportunity to program three different robot types: a humanoid JD Bot, a Hexapod, and an Adventure Bot. Each of the participants had the freedom to chose what they wanted to make their robot do, and the responsibility to try and program them to achieve that task.

Toni Lucas - The Pincher Creek and District Historical Society celebrated their 50th anniversary with an adults-only Prohibition Gala on Friday, September 2 and a family friendly Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 3.  Each event was hosted at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) and was totally different than the other except they each celebrated history and were designed for everyone in attendance to have to have fun.

Christian Davis - At their August 23 meeting council for the MD of Pincher Creek agreed to initiate the project to install used playground equipment in Lundbreck's Patton Park, with $21,904 in funding to come from the MD's Public Reserve Trust Fund.

The event was attended by Foothills Member of Parliament John Barlow, Mayor Don Anderberg, members of town council, the press, town employees, and other interested parties.

Cattle corral panels stolen from Chain Lakes area property

RCMP Alberta - The RCMP is seeking the public's help in an investigation into the recent theft of approximately 12 cattle corral panels from a property west of Nanton, near Chain Lakes, Alberta. Police believe the theft occurred sometime during night of Wednesday, August 31 to Thursday, September 1. The stolen "2W" brand panels were grey in colour.

No one injured in Burmis area house fire

Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) and Crowsnest Fire and Rescue responded to a residence on fire  at approximately 9:45 am, Monday, September 5, 2016. The residence is located south of Highway 3 near Rinke Sawmill, west of the Burmis vehicle inspection station.  According to PCES Deputy Fire Chief Pat Neumann no one was injured but the home has suffered a significant amount of damage from the fire, smoke and water.  Neumann said the fire is still under investigation, however it may have been related to a wood burning stove.
