More than “just” baby teeth

I have had many parents ask me why it is so important to take care of their children’s teeth when they are “just” baby teeth that they are going to lose anyway. The answer is simple - it is important because they are more than just baby teeth.

Primary, or baby teeth, act as “space holders” for the permanent adult teeth when they are ready to come in. If the baby teeth are broken down or removed before the adult tooth naturally erupts the remaining teeth can drift into the open space preventing the adult tooth from coming in. It is also important to know that some of the baby teeth, the back molars for example, will be in a child’s mouth until they are 12-14 years old.

PARTY program comes to Pincher Creek for first time

Students in southwestern Alberta are gearing up to learn about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, and how good decisions can help prevent injuries.

Over the next three months, about 300 students from the Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod, Taber and Crowsnest Pass areas will join health professionals, police officers, paramedics and injury survivors at hospitals and community events as part of Alberta Health Services’ (AHS) Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) program.

This is the first time Pincher Creek has hosted the PARTY program.

Two vehicle collision near Burmis sends one person to hospital

Approximately 9:00 am on Monday, March 28, Pincher Creek Emergency Services, Crowsnest Pass RCMP, and Lundbreck Fire Hall responded to a two vehicle collision between a tractor trailer and a minivan one kilometer west of the Burmis weigh scales on Highway 3. The driver of the minivan was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Crowsnest Pass Hospital with relatively minor injuries, and the other driver was released on scene. Workers were on scene for approximately one and a half hours. Recent weather included freezing rain and snowy conditions, which may have been contributing factors in this incident.

2016 Pincher Creek Ice Carnival

On Saturday, March 19 the Pincher Creek Figure Skating Club held their annual Ice Carnival at the Memorial Community Centre Arena. The turnout was excellent, with the performers flanked on both sides by full bleachers. The Ice Carnival had an international theme this year, with performances representing different nationalities through costumes and music, with everybody donning Canadian hockey jerseys and maple leafs in the finale.

Council for the Town of Pincher Creek passed first reading on bylaw 1547-AA during the regular meeting of council on Monday, March 14. This bylaw would allow an area of the North Hill residential area (west of the Ranchland Mall) to be rezoned from R-1 single family residential to include a multi-family residential area at the west end of the area between Tumbleweed Avenue and Sunshine Bay, served by an existing lane.

Alberta Health review of Rural Physician Action Plan concerning to Town and MD councils

Town of Pincher Creek and MD of Pincher Creek councils have each agreed to support the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) which was established in 1991.  RPAP helps introduce, train, and retain medical students in rural practice. Alberta Health will be conducting a review of RPAP's programs and services and it is currently expected that recommendations on the fate of RPAP to be provided to the Deputy Minister by 31 March 2016. RPAP's current grant funding ends on 31 March 2016. Alberta Health has indicated that in the interim they will provide 6 months funding to cover it until September 30, 2016. A letter for a request for support was discussed at MD Council on Tuesday March 8, and Dr. Gavin Parker presented at Town Council on Monday, March 14 for similar support. Both councils agreed to support the initiative.

Allied Arts Council presents plans and requests to Town Council

The Pincher Creek Allied Arts Council (AAC) Vice President Brian McGillivray gave a general overview of the AAC to the Pincher Creek Town Council during the regular meeting on Monday, March 14. He explained there is a whole new board who are endeavoring to cultivate creativity as their mission. "So we can better engage and support all the regional communities in building the capacity for social and economic innovation." He said the objective of the ACC hosted at Lebel Mansion is to provide regional residents with a greater number and diversity of opportunities to explore, develop and trade on their creative interests and talents. This includes development of commercial enterprises enabling regional artists and artisans to realize greater profit from their creative pursuits. "We don't want all our funding to come from others, we want to be self sustaining."

On Tuesday March 22 Saint Michael's French Immersion Kindergarten Class took a field trip to the Harvest Coffeehouse on Main Street Pincher Creek. The goal was to show the students what working in a restaurant is like. The students washed their hands and were given aprons before starting off with a tour of the premises. Later, the Kindergarten class was taken into the community room to make their own scones from a recipe provided by Harvest.

Severe road conditions and poor visibility in southern Alberta

In the early morning hours of March 25, 2016 the RCMP in Coaldale and Picture Butte detachments have responded to numerous incidents of motor vehicles going off the highway due to severe road conditions and extremely poor visibility in the Lethridge area including Highway 3, Highway 23, and Highway 25.

The RCMP would like to caution travelers as these roadways are currently experiencing very poor conditions due to inclement weather.

At 11:24 today, March 22, 2016,  Pincher Creek Emergency Services and Pincher Creek RCMP responded to a vehicle fire at the side of Highway 6 near Township Road 52, approximately 15 km south of Pincher Creek.  A pickup truck left the road and was fully engulfed. Two occupants of the vehicle were transported to Pincher Creek Health Centre with undetermined injuries via a private vehicle before first responders attended the scene.  The fire was extinguished and the scene was cleared by approximately 1:00 pm.

Update: According to Constable Curwin of the Pincher Creek RCMP, the fire was caused by mechanical failure.  The driver suffered undetermined lower body injuries.  No charges are expected to be laid in relation to the incident.

PCES responds to persistent Drywood Creek area grass fire

Pincher Creek Emergency Services (PCES) responded to a call for a grass fire at approximately 1:30 pm Sunday, March 21. The fire started in a stand of deciduous trees above the Drywood Creek bed on the south side of the creek about one and a half miles west of Waterton Dam, and spread toward the creek bed. The fire did come close to one structure, however the structure sustained no damage, and no injuries were reported.  PCES was called back to the scene today, Monday, March 22 to take care of hot spots, an effort that took several hours.

February was an easy going month, it was comforting to have a gentle pace of activities to gear us up to busier times ahead. Hockey Jersey Day was fun and we hope our votes counted. Lots of great pictures were taken and Crestview was a buzz with giggles and smiles.

On Thursday, March 10 Mass Registration for local groups was held from 6 to 8 pm in the Pincher Creek pool lobby. The hall was packed with adults and youth alike, talking with members of about 20 organizations. The upcoming Volunteer Appreciation luncheon was advertised heavily at the event. It's scheduled for Friday April 15 at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

859 Crowsnest Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets

[Crowsnest Pass, AB] - It’s been a busy period for the Air Cadets with 859 Crowsnest Squadron. On February 20th, 4 cadets travelled to Lethbridge to compete as a team in the Southern Alberta Zone Cadet Marksmanship Competition. Sergeant Alyssa Gustavson, Flight Corporal Jaeger Hann, and Corporals Matthias Vanderplas and Daniel Poloni all earned a bronze marksmanship championship series pin for wear on their uniform by participating. Their skills were put to the test with the cadet air rifle, in both the prone (on the ground) and standing positions.

On Monday, March 7 Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village held a book signing for Family Secrets, a book written by local authors and workshopped by Tyler Trafford. All fifteen authors were present for the signing. Approximately 150 people were in attendance, and 100 books were sold. Museum Curator Farley Wuth said the books are "filled with many personal and historical recollections that offer a unique glimpse into local history."

Alberta Green Schools Workshop held in Pincher Creek

The Alberta Green Schools Workshop was held in the Pincher Creek Provincial building from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday, March 11th. Representatives of locals schools were joined by environmental organizations to spend the developing projects that could be used to foster environmental leadership in local youth. Those in attendance spent the morning brainstorming ideas, then switched to planning in the afternoon.

Christian Davis - The Pincher Creek/CNP Midget Huskies traveled to Provost last week/weekend for the four-day Hockey Alberta Midget D Provincials.

Game 1 was against host team the Provost Blades on Thursday March 10. The Huskies won that one 9-1. On Friday March 11 they defeated the Elk Point Avalanche 15-5. On Saturday March 12 the Huskies defeated the Valleyview Ice Bears 6-3.

On Sunday March 13 the Huskies defeated the Lamont Hawks 5-0 in the simifinal.  Valleyview's Ice Bears defeated Jasper's Bearcat's 4-3 in their semifinal.  The Ice Bears went on to win the 2016 Alberta Hockey Midget D Provincials Gold after defeating the Huskies 5-2 in the final game.  A scoreless third period in that one.  The Huskies earned Silver for their efforts.

Huskies #15 Levi Anderson was the tournament Leader with a total of 19 points. Anderson was also top scorer with 11 goals.  Anderson and Ice Bears #3 topped the assists chart with 8 apiece. Huskies #23 Craig Marshall was third highest scorer in the tournament with 8 goal.  Huskies goalie #33 Jeremy Kretz earned third place in the goalie stats with a 2.80 average.

Huskies Eligh Big Bull, Colin Lincez, and Sam Gerrand also get a nod for earning 8 points each, putting them near the top of the rankings.  In total Huskies players occupied 5 of the top 12 spots in the players' Points category and 1 in the top 3 for goaltending.

2015/16 was an epic season for the Huskies.

The Pincher Creek/CNP Midget Huskies roster includes the best talents of our region into one special team.  Some players began as adversaries to each other as far back as initiation, and in the long road between then and now they have evolved into one determined unit.  This season they left the Spud League for the more competitive Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL).  After the CAHL tiering round was concluded the Huskies were bumped up from tier 3 to tier 1.  They spent their season travelling to some great lengths to take on consistently worthy adversaries, and it definitely kept them on their toes.  It helped to have a team with this much star quality.  In the entire 2015/16 CAHL season the Huskies won 15 games, lost 10, and tied 3.  129 goals for and 102 against.  At home in the Crowsnest or Pincher rinks they won 9 games, lost 2, and tied 2.  The Huskies got knocked out of the CAHL finals in the second round, after winning 2 games and losing 2, but had already been confirmed for Provincials before that point in the season.

After 23 years of electricity generation, the Cowley Ridge wind farm has reached the end of operating life and will be decommissioned. The 16-megawatt, 57-turbine wind farm has been operating since 1993 and still uses first-generation wind technology. The site has already passed its 20-year design lifespan.

Oldman River Bridge on Highway 22 open for business

According to a tweet today by @511Alberta, repairs have been completed to the Oldman River Bridge crossing on Highway 22, north of Highway 3 near Maycroft.  

Heavy vehicular traffic was particularly restricted during the repair process, with heavy loads being diverted  into the backroads of the lower westward Porcupines.  All restrictions imposed during the repair process have now been lifted.

Camp Gladstone rezoning request denied

At their regular meeting held Tuesday afternoon March 8 Council for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 discussed Bylaw 1265-15, which was intended to rezone the land use designation of a quarter section of land in MD Division 3 from “Agriculture – A” to “Rural Recreation 1 – RR1”. The intended purpose of the redesignation was to allow the site to be used as a youth camp, specifically Heartland Community Church’s Camp Gladstone youth camp. The Bylaw was defeated 4-1 at second reading..

Fish and Wildlife Officers seeking those responsible for dumping coyote carcasses

On March 2, 2016, the Lethbridge Fish and Wildlife Office received a complaint regarding a multitude of coyote carcasses. Officers responded and located approximately 150 coyote carcasses disposed of on the public land surrounding the Milk River Ridge Reservoir. The carcasses were found on the south west side of the reservoir.

Fish and Wildlife Officers are asking for the public’s help to locate the individuals responsible. A charge of improper disposal of waste on public land would apply.

The 2016 Chinook Basketball Post Season Championship Tournament took place from Thursday March 3 to Saturday March 5, spread out across four different schools.

On Thursday games 1 and 2 of the tournament were played at 6 pm. In Nanton, JT Foster played County Central, while Matthew Halton played Piikani in Brocket. Matthew Halton and JT Foster won their games, and advanced to the next round.

MD of Pincher Creek registers interest in Axia internet initiative

At their February 23 meeting council for the Muncipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 carried a motion by Councillor Garry Marchuk to register online as an interested party to the "Generation Axia" fibre optic internet initiative currently being pursued by the Town of Pincher Creek.

The Alberta Trappers Association (ATA) will be holding their 43rd Annual Rendezvous and Outdoorsmen Show, called Rendezvous by the Creek, in the Town of Pincher Creek July 1 and 2, 2016.  On February 3, 2016 council for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 received a request for support from the organization.  At their February 23, 2016 meeting council decided to donate $1,155.00 to the ATA for the event, with the funds to come from the Grants to Groups and Organizations account.

At their February 23, 2016 meeting council for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 received a report from Director of Operations Leo Reedyk regarding regarding Emergency Repair Bridge File 6906 – Burmis Lake Twp. Rd. 7-2. The bridge was inspected in 2015. Large sections of concrete had fallen away from the structure, presumably as a result of tree debris damage incurred during the 2013 flood, resulting in a 5 tonne weight limit for vehicles using the bridge.

Council authorized the signing of a contract with M. Johnston Construction Ltd, (Cranbrook) to proceed with the project. Project funding of $106,829 is to come from the Public Works Capital Budget Reserve account.

On Friday March 4, 2016, following the second day of the Chinook League Post Season Championship basketball tournament at Matthew Halton High School (MHHS), MHHS  hosted the Chinook Basketball League's 2015/16 Post-Season Awards. Matthew Halton teachers and coaches Zach Harris and Brian Burns served as MCs for the evening. The evening started with the athlete’s prayer, grace was said, and the banquet was served. Awards followed the banquet.

Crowsnest Pass Thunder edges Novice Chinooks at MCC

On Saturday March 5 Pincher Creek's Novice Chinooks took to the ice at the MCC Arena in Pincher Creek, hosting the Crowsnest Pass Thunder for a semi-final playoff game. The teams were evenly matched, and the game was close. However, in the final period the Thunder took the lead, winning 3-2.

Livingstone School holds Career Fair

On Wednesday March 2 Livingstone High School hosted a career fair during its mentor block, allowing its students to ask questions about a variety of careers from leaders in those fields. The program was suggested by the school's students, and featured speakers from a variety of careers that held students interests. Students from grade nine all the way through to grade twelve were in attendance. A common theme amongst all of the presentations was the integration of new technologies into modern careers.

Atom Chinooks win big against Cardston Thunder

On Saturday March 5 Pincher Creek's Atom Chinooks hosted the Cardston Thunder at the MCC Arena in Pincher Creek. Things looked close in the first period, but the Chinooks were in great form in the second half of the game, ultimately earning a wide margin win.
