Medicine Hat protester arrested
Medicine Hat Police Service
On December 1, 2014 at approximately 9:48 AM a 911 call was made by a member of the public after being asked to call 9-1-1 by a male who said that “he was going to jump into traffic”. A lone police officer responded to the scene and found a 38 year old male lying face down on a yoga mat in the middle of the roadway at 1st Street SE and 6th Avenue SE. The male was repeatedly requested by the officer to get up from the roadway as he was a danger to himself and to motorists.
When the male refused he was arrested under the Mental Health Act to ensure his safety. The male passively resisted arrest by not complying with demands and stated that the event was staged and police would have to hurt him. Two off duty police officers saw the hazard that this male was causing and stopped to assist the responding officer to get the male in custody without injury.
The male was transported to the hospital, where he was assessed. He did not receive any medical treatment for any injuries but was later admitted under the Mental Health Act. The male is not facing any criminal charges but was issued a Traffic Safety Act infraction.
Shortly after police arrival another male appeared on scene to film the entire incident. This video has since been publicly released and is suggesting that the male was taken away “bloody and beaten by police”. This is completely unfounded.
While it is difficult to determine what the motivated today’s protest, recent events that have occurred globally have caused increased concern about police actions. The Medicine Hat Police Service takes the responsibility of interactions with the public very seriously. Our members are trained to use the least amount of force necessary in our efforts to ensure public safety.
We want to thank the community for your continued support and want to stress the importance of being properly informed before jumping to conclusions based on unfounded information shared via social media.
Red Deer child luring report a misunderstanding
Red Deer RCMP have been in contact with a concerned citizen who believes he may have been the subject of the media release regarding child luring that was distributed on November 24. The citizen recounted stopping his truck to wave a child across the road, and then continuing on his way to work. He noted that the child appeared concerned but didn’t think of it again until he heard media reports regarding a child luring incident in that neighbourhood.
After follow-up investigation, Red Deer RCMP feel confident that this situation was the result of a misunderstanding. They thank the citizen for coming forward, and thank the public and media for sharing a potentially concerning situation so widely.
RCMP take reports of potential dangers to children very seriously. While this instance was the result of a misunderstanding, RCMP congratulate the young girl for reacting as she did: avoiding unknown vehicles, running to a safe place, and reporting potential danger.

Impaired teen driver charged in Leduc
RCMP Leduc
On Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 at approximately 9:45 PM, a RCMP member on patrol came across a collision on Black Gold Drive and Alton Drive in Leduc, AB. One of the vehicles was driving without headlights and rear ended another vehicle causing significant damage. Leduc Fire Services and EMS attended as well.
While speaking to one of the drivers, 19 year old Trenton Darnell Plaizier, the officer noted that he was under the influence of alcohol, and was taken into custody for impaired driving.
One of the passengers in Plaizier’s vehicle had significant injuries to his head and face and was transported to hospital by EMS. It’s believed that the injured passenger was not wearing his seatbelt properly. There were 5 occupants of the other vehicle that also sustained minor injuries and were transported to Edmonton hospitals, and released shortly after.
A collision analyst was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Plaizier was transported to the Leduc RCMP detachment where he provided breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit. Plaizier has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, operating a motor vehicle over .08 causing bodily harm, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Trafficking charges Edmonton
Edmonton Police Service
As a result of a confidential tip from a member of the public, the Edmonton Police Service Specialized Traffic Apprehension Team (STAT) executed search warrants on three residences and seized drugs, weapons and cash, and also charged four individuals allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
In early 2014, STAT members commenced a drug-related investigation after receiving information about an alleged “dial-a-dope” operation. During the course of the investigation, officers discovered that this was not a one-person operation, but a group of individuals allegedly involved in the local drug trade. With the assistance of detectives from the EPS Drug and Gang Unit (EDGE), STAT officers were able to identify a number of additional suspects and residences.
On Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, STAT members executed search warrants on three south-side residences and one vehicle, and seized:
- Two handguns and ammunition – a .38 Special Revolver and a .25 Semi-Automatic Pistol (prohibited weapon with serial number removed)
- A conductive energy weapon (CEW)
- Approximately $12,000 in Canadian currency
- 370.8 grams of cocaine (approximate street value $26,900)
- 1,585.2 grams of buff (approximate street value $6,340)
- 90.2 grams of marijuana (approximate street value $1,350)
- 16.6 grams of hashish (approximate street value $332)
Saul was also charged with unauthorized possession of prohibited/restricted weapon, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to public, unauthorized possession of prohibited device or ammunition (x3), careless storage of firearm, weapon, ammunition (x2), and possession knowing serial number alter/deface/remove.
Uppal was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to public.
Perner was also charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (steroids), possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine), possession of stolen property under $5000 (proceeds of crime), possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to public, and obstructing a peace officer.
EPS STAT continues to investigate the file.
The Specialized Traffic Apprehension Team (STAT) is part of the EPS Violence Reduction Strategy to help keep Edmonton safe. STAT continues to focus on traffic safety and enforcement, vehicles and occupants involved in illegal activities, as well as deterring other forms of crime and disorder.
“STAT’s strength is being able to focus on the mobile criminals,” says Staff Sgt. Randy Loxterkamp with EPS STAT. “Every day, STAT officers intercept traffic violators, suspended or impaired drivers, individuals wanted on warrants, or those who are in possession of stolen vehicles, stolen property, illegal weapons or drugs. We share intelligence between divisions and other specialized investigative units, allowing us to better focus police resources. In this particular file, we were able to utilize additional investigative strategies to be more proactive and effective, and make more significant arrests and seizures.”
So far in 2014 as a result of vehicle interdictions, STAT has seized: seven firearms; 120 other illegal weapons including knives, machetes, swords, brass knuckles, tasers, pepper spray, batons, and ammunition; $103,594 in cash; 4,489 grams of marijuana; 251 grams of hashish; 17 millilitres of hash oil; 1,013 grams of cocaine; 4.7 grams of heroin; 28.3 litres of GHB; 7.4 grams of MDMA; 71 grams of ketamine; 365 grams of methamphetamine; 1,253 assorted pharmaceutical pills; 10 millilitres of steroids; 42.3 grams of mushrooms; and laid 2,392 criminal charges with 842 of those associated to drugs and violence.
