Fentanyl Public Safety Notice
RCMP and AHS Grande Prairie
Following several recent Grande Prairie-area drug seizures, Grande Prairie RCMP and Alberta Health Services (AHS) are again reminding Albertans about the significant health risks associated with street drug use
During the past month alone, the Grande Prairie RCMP has seized over 10,000 pills of fentanyl. Typically sold under the street name 'greenies', the RCMP has also noticed an increase in the possession of this drug by people who are searched incidental to arrest. A number of recent sudden death investigations with suspected links to this drug are also underway.
“The RCMP is dedicated to keep the people of Grande Prairie safe and secure” says Cpl Roy Kennedy, the media relations officer of the Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment. “The presence of these drugs poses a threat to our families, and our children.” The illegal distribution of illicit drugs funds criminal organizations and contributes to other illegal activities including break and enters, thefts and violence to name a few. Those that traffic in illicit drugs destroy lives, homes and communities.
The growing prevalence of fentanyl is a public health risk. Often indistinguishable from other drugs, fentanyl presents a significantly higher risk of toxic effects. Fentanyl also produces symptoms and signs that mimic the effects of other opioids; however, different doses of medications are required to treat the toxic effects of fentanyl.
Alberta Health Services always advises against the use of street drugs.
If anyone who has used or come into contact with fentanyl or any other street drug, becomes unconscious, stops breathing, experiences chest pain or has a seizure, call 911 immediately.
Albertans can also call PADIS toll-free, 24/7, at 1-800-332-1414, for confidential discussion with staff trained in the assessment and management of exposures to drugs, including fentanyl. If you are concerned about your own drug or alcohol use, the drug and/or alcohol use of a friend or loved one, or would simply like more information on drug and alcohol use, contact the Addiction & Mental Health 24 Hour Helpline at 1-866-332-2322.
The RCMP will continue to crack down on those who illegally possess and distribute this highly potent and potentially dangerous drug.

Calgary hit and run suspect charged
Calgary Police Service
Background (edited): As reported previously, on Thursday, December 11, 2014 police were called to a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot in the Douglasdale area. Upon police arrival, witnesses pointed out the vehicle had just left the parking lot and was travelling at a high rate of speed along 130 Avenue SE. It is believed the CPS member, in a marked unit, attempted to pull over the truck, by turning on their lights. The truck then fled and the marked unit disengaged. A short distance later, the truck sped through an intersection at 46 Street S.E., against a red light, T-boning a car on the driver’s door and striking another vehicle that had been waiting to turn left in the intersection. The female passenger and the male driver of the truck both fled the collision scene on foot. The driver was apprehended a short distance away, however, the woman has not yet been located. Two men in the car were transported to hospital in serious condition, but have since been upgraded to stable. The passengers of the third vehicle were also transported to hospital as a precaution. Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was notified and will be investigating if the actions of the police contributed to the collision.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced yesterday the seizure of $84,439 in currency from a traveller at the Calgary International Airport on December 8.
While conducting routine outbound checks, CBSA officers spoke to one traveller who declared he was travelling with $2,000. Officers referred him for a more in-depth examination and found an additional $80,000 undeclared U.S. and Canadian bills in the passenger’s belongings.
The man was unable to demonstrate to officers that he had legitimately obtained the money. The currency was seized as suspected proceeds of crime with no terms of release.
The investigation is ongoing.
This is the largest seizure of suspected proceeds of crime by the CBSA in Alberta this year.
So far this year, CBSA officers in Calgary have made 127 currency seizures valued at more than $1.8 million.
Currency and other monetary instruments valued at $10,000 or more must be reported ‒ failure to report may result seizure action.
“This seizure underscores the CBSA’s commitment to ensuring that Canada’s borders are not used as a means to facilitate the flow of funds to be used for or from illegal activity by organizations who may pose a risk to Canada's national security.” – Nina Patel, District Director, Prairie Region, CBSA.
