Online Canadian Finals Rodeo ticket scam
The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public to be vigilant when purchasing tickets online, after identifying more than 30 instances of an online scam for Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) tickets.
The EPS has noted a series of incidents on Kijiji in which online sellers provide an excuse as to why they cannot meet the CFR ticket buyer in person. The seller then requests an online e-transfer from the buyer as payment, and once payment has been received, the seller fails to deliver the tickets and ends all contact with the buyer.
If you are trying to purchase tickets from an online platform, take the following steps:
Purchase tickets through an authorized seller.
Obtain a bill of sale from the seller and confirm their identity through government-issued photo identification.
Conduct the sale in a public location with surveillance cameras, such as a police station.
There is no way to confirm the ticket you receive is valid until you attempt to gain entry to the event. As such, take the above precautions to ensure you do not fall victim to this scam.
Citizens are reminded to protect their property by removing all valuables from vehicles while attending events.
Anyone who has fallen victim to this scam or has further information is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Support Our Troops licence plate raised more than $220,000
Government of Alberta
About 4,000 Alberta vehicles now display a Support Our Troops licence plate, and for each one sold, $55 went to help military families in Alberta.
Since it was introduced on July 22, 2014, the Support Our Troops licence plate has given Albertans a new way to show their respect for—and help aid—Canadian service men and women in Alberta.
“The Support Our Troops licence plate is both a statement of pride and a show of support for our military families. I encourage Albertans to consider ordering a Support Our Troops licence plate this Remembrance Day. I’m glad to have my plate as a way of saying thank you to our military.” - Stephen Khan, Minister of Service Alberta
The Support Our Troops Program aids injured personnel and provides financial assistance to current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families. To date, Albertans have contributed more than $220,000 through licence plate sales to the program, which is administered by the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services.
“The Support Our Troops licence plate is a fitting reminder of the sacrifices we will commemorate this upcoming Remembrance Day. Through the Support Our Troops Program and the generosity of Albertans, this initiative will help the extraordinary and unique needs of military members and their families.” - Commodore Mark Watson, Director General at Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services
The Support Our Troops plate complements Alberta’s veterans’ plates, which feature a poppy in honour of former and current members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Support Our Troops plate can be ordered through registry agents across Alberta. Allow two weeks for delivery.

Recycling company fined for Fisheries Act violation in Edmonton
Environment Canada
Last week, General Recycling Industries Ltd. (GRI) pleaded guilty in Alberta Provincial Court to one count of an offence under the Fisheries Act, related to the release of a deleterious substance into fish-bearing waters. The company was sentenced to a $75,000 penalty.
On April 28, 2012, Environment Canada received notification that “oily water” was being pumped from GRI property into a storm sewer. An Enforcement Officer attended the site and observed a four inch hose discharging industrial wastewater into the sewer, which flows into Mill Creek and subsequently the North Saskatchewan River. Both bodies of water are fish-bearing.
Sample analysis confirmed that the wastewater was deleterious to fish. An investigation into the incident was opened and the company was charged in 2013.
$73,000 of the penalty will be allocated to the Environmental Damages Fund.
