The Livingstone Sabres Girls Volleyball JV and SV teams hosted their Nobleford Blades counterparts on Wednesday evening October 1 and their F.P. Walshe Flyers counterparts on Tuesday evening October 6.  The Sabres had considerable success against the Blades but were shut out by the Flyers.

Sabres vs Flyers

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the games against Nobleford, but was told by several people that it was one of the better games of the season so far for the Sabres. Sabres Coach Anne Molnar explained that the Sabres lost the JV sets against Nobleford but then went on to win all the SV sets. "We started out slow, but we got stronger and stronger, and kicked Seniors' butt. Yes, yes we did." Molnar coaches the Sabres with fellow Coach Dawn Heerschap and "Aunt Kim" from Lethbridge "who helps out with a lot of stuff".

"I love them," Molnar said of the Sabres. "They're a good bunch of girls, they work well together. They need a little more training of course, and practices, but they are coming together. They are going to be a good team. They didn't have a team last year, so really they're working really darn hard. Some of them haven't played since Junior High School, that's how long it's been, there wasn't a team. The reason they have a team this year is because Dawn and I accepted the challenge. We both have never coached a team before, and we figured that since no one else stepped up to the plate..."

Sabres vs Flyers
The October 6 games against Fort Macleod's Flyers was a bit lopsided, with the Flyers demonstrating why F.P. Walshe teams tend to have a reputation for excellence.  The Flyers were disciplined throughout, and their experience showed on the court and on the scoreboard.  They won all three JV and all three SV sets.  The best set for the JV Sabres was the last one, with the Sabres establishing an early lead and then staying apace the Flyers in the middle of it, playing with confidence and more cohesion than previously, before the Flyers surged forward to a 5 point win.  The SV sets were a similar experience, with a dismal start for the Sabres, followed by a surge midway through the second set before they ran out of steam.  The third SV set saw the Sabres take an early lead before the never say die Flyers took it back again.  The Sabres showed improvement with each passing set, but the Flyers proved themselves to be very tough competitors.
