Remembered: EPS dog Quanto

RCMP Alberta Media Relations

A memorial plaque was unveiled yesterday at “K” Division RCMP Headquarters in Edmonton in tribute to Quanto, the Edmonton Police Service dog who lost his life in the line of duty on October 7, 2013. Quanto was stabbed in the parking lot of “K” Division Headquarters after engaging a suspect who was fleeing Edmonton police on foot. Efforts to save the dog were unsuccessful and Quanto died of his injuries. RCMP Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta, Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht and employees from both agencies were on hand to witness the unveiling.

Quanto
“Police dogs are loyal partners who do what is asked of them. A year ago today, Quanto did what was asked and died because of it, “said RCMP Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta. “Quanto’s death was a loss felt by the entire Canadian police community across Canada, and particularly here at “K” Division where it hit very close to home.”

The plaque commemorating Quanto’s sacrifice now hangs by the employee entrance of “K” Division Headquarters, approximately 100 metres from where Quanto was stabbed. It is placed there as a symbol and a reminder to all employees entering the building of Quanto’s sacrifice, the risks associated with police work and the RCMP’s strong bond with the Edmonton Police Service and other police agencies throughout Alberta.

“Quanto died helping to protect our employees and we are very grateful for that,” said Ryan. “Today, we also acknowledge the close bonds that tie all Alberta police agencies together in good times and bad.”

In February 2014, the man who killed Quanto was sentenced to 26 months in prison related to a string of criminal offences related to the incident, including animal cruelty. He was also banned from owning a pet for 25 years.

Canada-wide human trafficking investigation

The Edmonton Police Service’s Vice Section executed a two-day, undercover operation, as part of a recent Canada-wide investigation into human trafficking.

“These are proactive initiatives that the Edmonton Police Service regularly undertakes throughout the year, in an attempt to confront the issue of human trafficking head-on,” said Det. David Schening, of the EPS Vice Section. “The trafficking of human beings, many of whom are lured into the sex trade industry, is not something that just occurs internationally, but also regionally within our own country.”

That theory was reinforced during a two-day hotel sting operation carried out by the EPS Vice Section, Oct. 1-2, 2014, which focused on providing “intervention and exit strategies” for women involved in the sex trade industry. “We did not come across any under-age girls involved in prostitution this time, which was positive, but we did notice a growing trend of women being transported inter-provincially from eastern Canada,” explained Schening.

Vice Section members interviewed 16 women during the two-day undercover operation, 15 of whom were from Toronto and Montreal.

“We want to let these women know that they have options – options that could end up saving their lives,” Schening said adding, “Our role is to provide intervention and exit strategies for these individuals, and to let them know that they always have somewhere to turn and someone they can trust.”

Police services representing 26 cities and towns across the country participated in Operation Northern Spotlight.

West Edmonton problem property closed

ALERT

A west Edmonton home that has caused neighbourhood concerns over suspected drug activity, has been closed following an Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) investigation.

In response to concerns for public safety, ALERT’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) team has closed the home located at 8015 189 Street. The home has been associated with suspected drug activity and Edmonton Police Service members have been called to the home in the past. In May 2014, a suspected drug dealer was arrested in the driveway of the home.

The closure took place on October 7th and will last for a period of 90 days.

SCAN uses civil legislation to target problem properties around the province that are used for illegal purposes such as prostitution, gangs, drug use and drug trafficking. The SCAN team consists of Alberta Sheriffs who partner with local police agencies on their investigations.

During the 90-day closure, the tenant is barred from entering or occupying the property and locks being changed, windows and doors boarded up, and the property fenced. SCAN began their investigation in August 2013 and initially attempted to address the concerns through informal means.

Since October 2008, SCAN has received more than 2,500 complaints about problem properties province-wide. Fifteen closures have taken place in the Edmonton area.

Albertans who suspect illegal activity is occurring at a property in their neighbourhood can contact SCAN online at www.alert-ab.ca/scan or toll-free at 1-866-960-SCAN (7226). All complaints are confidential. Residents are reminded never to investigate suspected problem properties on their own.

ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime. Nearly 400 municipal police, RCMP, and sheriffs work in ALERT.

Calgary break-in suspect charged

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in connection with three break-ins in the community of Killarney.

In August, the Service urged Calgarians to properly secure their homes and vehicles after a number of nighttime breaks-ins around the area.  Between Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, and Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, 10 break and enters were reported in the community. In all cases, the culprit gained access to residences through unlocked windows and doors, by removing screen windows, or through open overhead garage doors. In all of the cases, residences were occupied at the time of the break-ins.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, officers in District 2 arrested Ylli SIMNICA, 20, of Calgary, and charged him in connection with three of the Killarney break-ins. He also faces several weapons-related charges.  A search warrant was executed on SIMNICA’s home and numerous items were recovered in connection with the break-ins.

In one of the break-ins, several firearms were stolen. All of the weapons were recovered during the search warrant.

This investigation continues and further charges are possible.

Officers are currently going through the stolen items and contacting victims. Investigators are requesting anyone who was the victim of a car prowling in the Killarney area since Aug. 15, and has not yet called police, to please report it online at www.calgarypolice.ca.

The Service would like to remind Calgarians to stay vigilant and to secure their homes and vehicles throughout all hours of the day, regardless of residences being occupied.
