Two people charged in connection with Lethbridge stabbing

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged two people in connection with a stabbing along 13 Street North.

On Sept. 29, 2014 at approximately 10:30a.m. police responded to a report of a male in medical distress at the Northside Medical Clinic along the 400 block of 13 Street North. Police and EMS attended and located a 29-year-old man with stab wounds. The victim was transported to hospital and treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital.

Investigation determined the victim had exited the medical clinic when he was observed by occupants in a passing vehicle. The vehicle ‎stopped and the victim was confronted by a 32-year-old male acquaintance. A physical altercation ensued and the victim was stabbed multiple times. The subject returned to the vehicle and it fled the area.

The 32-year-old male subject and the female driver of the vehicle were subsequently located and arrested later in the day.

This was a targeted crime that involved a subject and victim who are known to one another.

The incident was not related to the medical clinic.

Deanna Elaine Shouting, 43, of Lethbridge is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Rueben Cody Smith, 32, of Lethbridge, is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of an offensive weapon and two counts of breach of a recognizance.

Both Shouting and Smith were scheduled to appear before a Justice of the Peace yesterday.

Pistol-grip shotgun seized from Red Deer drug house

ALERT

A pistol-grip shotgun and quantity of drugs were seized from a Red Deer drug house by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT). The Grandview neighbourhood home is located across from a middle school and has been the scene of recent drug activity.
ALERT Red Deer, along with assistance from Red Deer RCMP members and the RCMP Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant at the home on September 25th and arrested three people. The search was executed in the pre-dawn hours in order to minimize the risk to public safety.

Quantities of crack cocaine, marihuana and evidence of drug trafficking were seized from the home. ALERT Red Deer initiated the investigation into the home earlier this month in response to community concerns over drug trafficking.

Paul Edmund Fisch, 47, and Sharon Elizabeth Smith, 37, are facing a combined 23 drug and weapons related charges. Investigators also arrested Ryan William Litwyn, 27, who was the subject of eight warrants out of Red Deer. Litwyn also faces five additional charges related to breach and drugs.

Bus crashes into St. Albert house

St. Albert RCMP

At approximately 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, a St. Albert Transit Bus travelling northeast on Heritage Drive near Haviland Crescent in St. Albert, drove off the road, collided with a residential fence and a shed. The bus continued to travel through that home's backyard pushing an empty trampoline in front of it and broke through another fence. The bus then collided with the back deck of a second residence and came to a stop.

The male driver of the transit bus was alone on the bus at the time of the incident. He was taken from the scene by ambulance, but is not believed to have serious injuries.

The owners of the first home, where the bus entered the yard, were not home at the time of the collision. The two adults and two children of the second home where the bus came to a rest were home at the time of the collision. They did not suffer any physical injuries but were understandably shaken up.

Immediate assistance was given to the transit driver by area residents. St. Albert RCMP, the St. Albert Fire Department and EMS attended the scene. As well, the City of St. Albert Transit Services attended the collision and have offered help to all involved. This investigation is in its initial stages and the cause of this collision is not known at this time. St. Albert RCMP are seeking any witnesses that saw the collision and may be able to shed light on this event. They are asked to call the St. Albert RCMP at 780 458 7700.

St. Albert Victim Services will be working with the people directly impacted by this incident. They provide emotional support during tough times and can find resources to help people get their lives back after tragic incidents. St. Albert Victim Services is free and anyone affected by this incident - even indirectly, is welcome to call them at 780 458 4353.

Safety during hunting season

Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP

With the advent of fall, many Albertans are hunting throughout the rural areas. It is critical that safety be paramount at all times.

On September 23rd, a resident Southwest of Stony Plain located a small-caliber shell lodged in the front entrance to her home. This occurred in a heavily wooded area frequented by hunters.

Alberta hunting regulations state that no one must discharge a weapon within 183 meters (200 yards) of an occupied building. Further, no one may discharge a firearm along or across a regularly maintained road or highway, unless the road is specifically designated, or they are hunting game birds with a shotgun and valid licence.

The onus is on all hunters to be aware of the laws surrounding the acquisition, possession, transportation and use of weapons and ammunition.

General Rules of Firearm Safety:
  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
  • Keep the action of the firearm open, except when shooting or when storing an unloaded gun.
  • Use the right ammunition for your firearm.
  • Be sure of your target – and beyond.
Poaching is a serious crime with severe penalties. If convicted, poachers may be fined up to $100,000 and/or be sentenced to six months in jail.

Call the Report A Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3800. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week.

Airdrie RCMP warns of internet frauds

Airdrie RCMP

Airdrie RCMP would like to remind the public to stay safe and secure online as internet frauds are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

RCMP has recently received information of an elaborate online fraud claiming to be Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Fraud occurs as follows;
  • Subject receives an email claiming to be from CRA. Email states that funds need to be deposited into subject’s account, provides a link.
  • When link is clicked on, redirects to a site which appears similar to CRA website.
  • Site then requests information such as Mother’s Maiden Name, Social Insurance Number and Credit Card Info.
Safety tips to remember; If something doesn’t feel right, it’s likely not right. If in doubt about a communication alleging to be from a bank or government agency, call the agency and confirm. Do not provide information online, and be cautious clicking on links from unknown sources.

RCMP has yet to receive any calls regarding this scam, and this information is disseminated purely for the safety and security of the public.
