Did you attend or support the Relay for Life in June? The committee sincerely thanks all those who contributed to the success of Pincher's 1st Relay for Life June 21, 2014.  An amazing $39,303 was raised through the kindness and generosity of our community.  To say we were in awe of this success is an understatement!

Want to know how your donation to the Canadian Cancer Society helps people in the community? Michelle Sauve, Community Developer, for the Canadian Cancer Society in Southern Alberta was recently in Pincher Creek and spent some time with a few of the Relay for Life Committee Members talking about the programs and services available here. The following is just some of the information Michelle shared.

It’s been said that “knowledge is power.” I am reminded of this each time I meet someone newly diagnosed with cancer and provide them with information about the Canadian Cancer Society’s programs and services and. The most common thing I hear: “I wish I’d known more about this sooner.” Please help me spread the word to those newly diagnosed in your community and their caregivers, families, friends and co-workers that the Canadian Cancer Society is here to help!

Your donations to the Relay for Life help to provide the following programs and services. Our Patient Care Kit is usually the first connection we have with newly diagnosed patients. These kits are provided to patients via various doctors’ offices, hospitals, clinics, surgical wards and the cancer centre. The kit contains practical items and information to help patients cope with their diagnosis. They can also be sent directly to you – order online at www.cancer.ca or call us toll-free at 1-888-939-3333. The brochures and patient care kits are now available at the Associate clinic.  Just ask!

Some other programs for anyone newly diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers include our Financial Assistance Program (for those needing to travel for treatment) and Cancer Connection (a telephone peer support program). We also have an online support community at CancerConnection.ca, where you can join discussions or start your own.

Our website (www.cancer.ca) is an excellent source of cancer information and includes a Canadian Cancer Encyclopedia and our Community Services locator. In our office, we have extensive print materials about all types of cancer and how to cope at any stage. Stop by the Lethbridge office of the Canadian Cancer Society at 317 – 10th Street South or you can order the materials online at cancer.ca.

We’re able to provide women with access to temporary breast prostheses free of charge refer them to a Cancer Support Group, share details about upcoming Look Good Feel Better workshops and how we can help them obtain a wig free of charge.

Knowledge can be powerful so please share this information!
