Spruce Grove home invasion

RCMP in Spruce Grove/Stony Plain continue to search for two men following a brazen home invasion on Monday, September 1st.

Just before 4:00 pm, two men and a woman entered a home in the Spruce Ridge area of Spruce Grove (West of Jennifer Heil Way) through the garage. A fourth person (male) waited in a vehicle.

Once inside, one man pointed a sawed off rifle at the male resident , and the woman pointed a handgun. Somehow the residents of the home forced the group outside, where a fight ensued on the street. A neighbor who tried to intervene was threatened with a firearm.

One of the male suspects got into a black Ford Raptor pick-up truck with the waiting driver, and they departed the area.

The suspect with the sawed off rifle grabbed a BMX bike and took off, and the female suspect took off running with him. They were apprehended by police a short time later at a nearby convenience store.

33 year old Christina Lynn Gauthier of Edmonton faces the following charges:
  • Robbery with firearm
  • Carry a Concealed Weapon
  • Firearm: use while committing an offence
  • Pointing a Firearm x 2
  • Possession of Weapon Dangerous
  • Fail to Comply with Firearms Prohibition Order
  • Break and Enter

Police do not believe this to be a random event, and are concerned by the fact that this occurred during a day on a long weekend on a residential street packed with children. Two youth were in the residence at the time, along with an adult man and woman.

Both firearms were recovered by police.

RCMP continue to search for the two other male suspects. One is described as a young Caucasian male, approximately 18 years of age. He was about 5'6, and very slender (130 lbs). Update at 3:45 pm September 3, 2014: Grande Prairie RCMP would like to thank the public and media for their assistance in identifying the suspects whom police believe are responsible for a theft and armed robbery. The suspects were identified as youths so their identity can not be released. The investigation remains open and charges are still pending.

Original story:
Police are asking for the public's assistance to identify suspects that they believe are responsible for a theft and armed robbery.

On the evening of August 25, 2014 at approximately 8 p.m. the Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a report of a theft at a liquor store in the area of 93rd Street and 76 Avenue. The investigation has revealed that 2 males suspects entered the store and walked out stealing two bottles of vodka. In the process of leaving the suspects damaged a door and were last seen leaving south from the area on foot.

Later in the evening on August 25, 2014 at approximately 10:55 p.m. a male entered a convenience store in the same shopping plaza as the liquor store. Once inside the premises, the suspect brandished a pen and demanded cash from the employee. The employee did not turn over any cash and the suspect was scared off when the employee brandished a metal pipe from behind the counter and another employee came from the rear when he heard the commotion. The suspect was seen by a witness running west on 76th Avenue.

Upon further investigation, RCMP have reason to believe that the suspects are responsible for both crimes that occurred on this evening. Photographs of the suspects from both businesses are attached.

Police are asking the public that if they can identify the suspect or have any information regarding these investigations to please contact the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5701 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

North Saskatchewan River search underway

Update:
at 3:22 pm today the Edmonton Police Service tweeted the following:  "Body recovered during first-ever search of river by #EPS Missing Persons Unit and partners."

The Alberta RCMP Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains Unit will be conducting an aerial sweep of the North Saskatchewan River east of Edmonton on Wednesday, September 3. The RCMP helicopter will be deployed along the North Saskatchewan River from the eastern limit of the City of Edmonton to the Saskatchewan border. The Edmonton Police Service will be conducting a concurrent river search within the city’s boundaries.

The purpose of this search is to afford both police agencies the opportunity to possibly recover the remains of one or more missing people who are known to have entered the river at some point. The operation is taking place today because at this time of year, the water level of the North Saskatchewan River is at its lowest and clearest.

Background:

In April 2014, the Alberta RCMP met with the Edmonton Police Service to discuss a river search and other missing person initiatives. The Edmonton Police Service currently has several ongoing investigations in which the missing person is believed to have entered the North Saskatchewan River.

Since 2010, the remains of three people who went missing in Edmonton have been discovered on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan.

There are currently 36 missing people who have been reported to RCMP Detachments located in communities along the North Saskatchewan River. Four of them are known to have entered the river but have never been located.

Fake gold scam returns to Red Deer

On September 1, RCMP received a report of a man and woman trying to sell gold jewellery from a vehicle in the south end of Red Deer on 50 Avenue. The man and woman were described as possibly East Indian, and were driving a silver Chrysler car with an Ontario plate. They were last seen driving south on 50 Avenue and police patrols of the area did not locate them. The person who reported these scammers was not defrauded of any money.

This scam tends to appear in Red Deer and other cities in the summer months, and Red Deer RCMP issued a warning to the public in early May of this year after seven reports of fake gold scammers were filed within a short time. In that series of incidents, several people were defrauded of significant amounts of money.

The usual approach in a fake gold scam is for a man and woman to approach people in parking lots and try to sell them fake gold jewellery. The scammers tell potential victims that they are down on their luck and need to sell the jewellery in order to get back home. They are often accompanied by a child and may drive rental vehicles.

If you have information that can assist the police in their investigation please contact Red Deer RCMP at 403.343.5575. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or report it online at www.tipsubmit.com.

When she went outside to check for the cause of the noise, she found a male climbing through a broken garage window.

The female homeowner confronted the male suspect and a brief physical altercation ensued resulting in both parties falling to the ground. The male suspect who was located in the garage was accompanied by another male individual who was standing just outside the backyard. Both males, each with their face covered, fled on foot towards Highwood Lake. One male was wearing a mustard colored hoodie, while the second was wearing a black cap and blue jeans.
