RCMP warn  of lethal drug

St. Albert RCMP has just confirmed that there is a lethal drug circulating in the Edmonton region. Pills that have been sold as Oxycontin in St. Albert have been analysed by the RCMP Drug Lab and they were determined to be Counterfeit Oxycontin, which in this case was Fentanyl. Counterfeit Oxycontin has been connected to 2 deaths of men in their early 20’s in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan earlier this month.

St. Albert RCMP believes that these Counterfeit Oxycontin pills have been seen in Edmonton and other surrounding communities as well. The pills have the number 80 on them, are a round convex shape and are blue-green in colour.

Fentanyl pills

Above is a photo of some of the Fentanyl pills that were seized in St. Albert. They are extremely similar to the photos of the deadly Counterfeit Oxycontin pills seized in Saskatoon.
Health Canada issued a warning to Canadians about the dangers of Fentanyl in October of 2013. They referred to Fentanyl as a “powerful opioid pain medicine.” They further stated that “exposure to fentanyl can be very dangerous and even lead to death.” Health Canada states that signs of a fentanyl overdose may include: slow or weak breathing, dizziness, tiredness, extreme sleepiness, confusion, difficulty talking or walking, hallucinations and seizures.

“The community should be concerned,” said Inspector Kevin Murray, the Officer in Charge of the St. Albert RCMP. “RCMP Drug investigators tell me that fentanyl is 80 times more toxic than morphine.”

St. Albert RCMP Drug Unit continues to investigate this case and they are interested in any information you may have about drug trafficking. Call the St. Albert RCMP Drug Tip Line at 780-460- DRUG (3784) and provide information. You will remain confidential if you wish.

If you have any information about drug trafficking or any crime, call the St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers. At Crime Stoppers, you do not need to reveal your identity. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to Call Display, Call Trace or tape any phone calls. If your information leads to an arrest, you qualify for a cash award up to $2,000.00. We want your tip, not your name. Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

There, the RCMP officer lost sight of the vehicle which went on to hit a pedestrian. Officers from the Lacombe Police Service attended to assist the 22 year-old woman who was air-lifted to hospital in Edmonton with serious injuries.

The vehicle did not stop after it hit the woman. The RCMP officer continued his efforts to locate the vehicle and did so when it came to a stop on Lakeside Sargent Road in the rural outskirts of Lacombe. The adult male driver of the vehicle and two male young persons were taken into and remain in RCMP custody. Charges against the driver are pending.

Based on research, which indicates on average ASIST participants do three interventions in the year following their workshop; ASIST-trained EPS personnel are responsible for over 2,600 suicide interventions in the past five years.”

“The EPS feels it is critical to educate and better equip all members with awareness and tools needed to help family, friends, or members of the public who may be at risk of suicide,” says Chaplain Peck.
