Pincher Creek was one of 45 communities across Canada that joined in the 13th annual Ovarian Cancer 'Walk of Hope' on Sunday, September 7. Starting at Town Hall, over 40 participants walked, jogged ran, or rode bikes in support of research for ovarian cancer. Local survivors Christine Lafreniere, Kathy Day Mantle, and Marlene Bourque participated in the walk. They were each presented with a fleece blanket patterned with teal ribbons of hope. Lafreniere has been a survivor for over 20 years, Bourque has been cancer free since July, 2013, and Day Mantle recently finished treatment. These three ladies led the walk with laughter and heads held high.

Bob Westrop acted as the Emcee, making announcements, encouraging the participants, and sharing information with those getting ready for the event. Co-chair and Organizer Leslie Claringbull said that over 17 million dollars has been raised for this cause since 2002. This is the second year that Pincher Creek has participated. Over $9,300 was raised on Sunday by the Pincher Creek event. During the opening ceremonies Claringbull explained that Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) does not receive any funding from government or other cancer agencies, and that this annual walk is the largest fundraiser and public awareness drive for the organization. OCC supports research, and education.

After the participants came through the teal and white balloon arch that marked the starting point they looped around and followed the creek path on either the 5 km or the 2.5 km routes that ended back at Town Hall. After the walk everyone was invited to participate in silent auctions, door prizes, and activities for the children. There were many reasons given for why people joined in. Some were supporting friends or family, some were remembering women that have lost their lives to cancer.
