Former Conservative Party of Canada MP for Calgary Centre-North (and cabinet minister) Jim Prentice is now the Premier-designate for the Province of Alberta after winning more than 76% of the 2014 Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership election vote on the first ballot. The other two candidates, Ric McIver and Thomas Lukaszuk, received 12% and 11% of the vote respectively. 23,386 votes were cast, an extremely small turnout.

There is something wrong with a democracy where 18000 people can elect a premier in a province of over 4 million simply by buying a party membership. I would much rather that the elected MLAs and MPs elect the leader, we may get the same guy but at least he will have a little less power over our elected representatives. And now Prentice has to run in a bi-election to get a seat but hasn't yet decided where to run...hello...your predecessor left an opening, run there and save us the cost of yet another election.
